If you ever wondered what it might be like to adopt a child, then this book might be for you. My life is boring, and I mean that in a good way. I am not rich. I am not very smart. I am completely average. My family was not well off. My parents were teachers and musicians, insuring that they were not going to have a comfortable lifestyle. I grew up in a community that was ideal for a kid. I lived in “Surf City” Huntington Beach, California during the 1970s, 80s, and 90s. Back then it was easier for an average family to survive on a moderate income. Things are becoming so expensive and more complicated than ever. I do not know if a family like the one I grew up in could live in Huntington Beach now without some help. After I moved to Los Angeles and attended UCLA, though I had dreams of being a writer, I knew that I was going to work in restaurants. These days as you watch television, it might seem that working in the food business looks glamorous, but I can assure you that it is not. It is a living but not what you might think. I like my career as a food manager but it is not for everyone. Writing is not always fun when you get right down to it and has the added benefit of not being a reliable way to pay the bills. My line of work exposes me to many young adults who are attending college. As a person who now is old enough to be their parent I am in an advice-giving position. I like to say two things about my career when I am asked. First I say "unfortunately, I chose the right career for me" and "do not work in restaurants, if you can." It is a miracle that I have been able to stay married and to carry on a somewhat normal life with all of the odd hours I need to work. Gone are the days of having a reliable and well paying job. I am lucky and grateful to work at UCLA. UCLA is stable, that is for sure. I graduated UCLA almost twenty years ago. I began working as a manager while I was finishing my undergraduate degree in English literature. After I worked in restaurant jobs for a few years, my wife and I wanted to have children. We experienced trouble with conceiving a child. This was not a delightful situation, but if there was a time that I could say that I had to grow up, that was the time. Meanwhile, my father passed away and then my father in law passed away. My wife and I sought out different medical treatments to have children that were not successful. The one thing that my wife and I always had was a strong bond. My wife is very tenacious. She is a wonderful example for me. We then finally learned how to adopt a child. There is a process that we went through within the County of Los Angeles. This book is the story in part, at least from my point of view, of our adoption of our son. It was easy and it was not easy. If there is one thing you could take away from this book, it is that if we could do it, so could you. [mehr]

Unlike a chair, an idea can be shared by a whole people. The time is right for alternative economics, reduced working hours, redefining work, security, health and happiness, person-oriented work, labor-intensive investment (not capital-intensive investments) and soft power. The only way to solve the three crises of mass unemployment,m environment destruction and trade imbalance is to move from quantitative to qualitative growth (cf. Hans-Christoph Binswanger). Access could replace excess as enou9gh could replace more. Possessions possess us more than we possess them. The car is more than a metal box but is a whole way of thinking encouraging domination, narcissism, solipsism and self-righteousness. Consumerism goes through the roof, not population. We have enough for everyone's need, not for everyone's greed (cf. Gandhi). The dialogue "Surviving Utopia" with Elmar Altvater and Raul Zelik intimates the wonders and obstacles to utopian thinking. Utopia, the place of no-place, is more a goal and objective than a concrete reality. Economics changes with the times. Once savings was the elixirr and then spending became the elixir. States are different than Swabian housewives. They can become indebted and invest and safeguard their future. What is rational from a microeconomic perspective can be destructive from a macroeconomic perspective. Increasing competitiveness is sensible for an individual corporation or businessperson but may be disastrous if all countries reduce their workforces. Wages are both costs and demand or purchasing power. Neoliberal myths and assumptions give unbounded freedom to capital while demeaning labor as only an inevitable cost. The articles "Learning from History," "Community Centers in O Canada," "Nature as Healer and Teacher," "Cinderella's Sisters and King Midas" and "Shouting from the Caboose" are invitations to ecological, sustainable, respectful and future-oriented change. "We must be wounded to be healed," Dorothee Soelle said. Have we been sufficiently wounded by materialism, imperial hubris, the financial crisis, deregulation, commodification, instrumental rationality, suburbanization and the work religion? In "Surveying Utopia," the emeritus professor Elmar Altvater shares the Polish proverb: You can make fish soup out of an aquarium but you can't make an aquarium out of fish soup. The future should be anticipated and protected in the present, not extrapolated from the present. The future could be full of community centers, free Internet books and soft power if we become active subjects and not passive objects, enthralled in the present and future like children. Music, books and questions make our lives rich and independent of the trickle-down market jingles. [mehr]

In 2013 economic crisis is marked by systemic and structural contradictions, exploding inequality, ecological overshoot and the erosion of trust, democracy and community. Trillions were given to Wall Street banks to avert financial collapse on the ground of "too big to fail." Private losses morphed into public losses. Taxpayers shouldered the losses from financial speculation and unbounded deregulation. Government acted as the "errand boy for the banks" (Bill Moyers). Economic problems are systemic and structural, not psychological and motivational. Risk-takers and job-creators have been unmasked. Risk-managers turned out to be risk-producers. The system must be changed because the systrem leads to stagnant wages over 30 years, totally inadequate creation of family-wage jobs paying into social security. Our clientele system confuses public and private, ignores long-term necessities (e.g. universal health care, free or affordable education and rights of nature) in favor of profit maximization and shareholder interests. We face system (collective and political) problems since lobbyists write legislation, corporations are treated as persons, money is regarded as speech (the disastrous 2010 Supreme Court decision in Citizens United) and investment is confused with speculation. Financial investment eclipses real economy investment. Wall Street banks spend over $4 billion over 10 years for lobbying and campaign contributions. The myths of neoliberalism and shareholder value were and are the basis for the 2007-2008 financial crisis. The myths of the invisible hand (that self-interest leads to the public interest), corporate beneficence, money created out of thin air, the Enron-model, the Apple-Google model of billions in dummy corporations or tax havens, the investors-suing-states model and the myth of nature as a free good, external or sink must be deconstructed and abandoned. Cooperation and competition are not opposites but depend on one another. Education, health care, air waves, food, housing and information are public and must remain public. Otherwise they become privileges and we live in a plutocracy or 21st century feudalism. The time is right for alternative economics, reducing working hours, labor-intensive investment, person-related work, access not excess and enough not more. Unlike a chair, an idea can be shared by a whole people! The following articles by Swiss, Austrian and German critical economists could revitalize public debate and understanding. The present system is unsustainable and the future system is still being designed. Radical change is a necessity given the end of cheap oil, climate change and the need to redefine work, security, happiness and health. Only dead fish swim with the stream. You can make fish soup out of an aquarium but you can't make an aquarium out of fish soup. A public debate on job creation, shrinking the financial sector, market failure, motors, models and myths is imperative. [mehr]
