The Satyricon is a Latin work of fiction in a mixture of prose and poetry. It is believed to have been written by Gaius Petronius Arbiter, though the manuscript tradition identifies the author as a certain Titus Petronius. As with the Metamorphoses of Apuleius, classical scholars often describe it as a "Roman novel", without necessarily implying continuity with the modern literary form. The surviving portions of the text detail the misadventures of the narrator, Encolpius, and his lover, a handsome sixteen-year-old boy named Giton. Throughout the novel, Encolpius has a hard time keeping his lover faithful to him as he is constantly being enticed away by others. Encolpius's friend Ascyltus (who seems to have previously been in a relationship with Encolpius) is another major character.
Of the many masterpieces which classical antiquity has bequeathed to modern times, few have attained, at intervals, to such popularity; few have so gripped the interest of scholars and men of letters, as has this scintillating miscellany known as the Satyricon, ascribed by tradition to that Petronius who, at the court of Nero, acted as arbiter of elegance and dictator of fashion. The flashing, wit, the masterly touches which bring out the characters with all the detail of a fine old copper etching; the marvelous use of realism by this, its first prophet; the sure knowledge of the perspective and background best adapted to each episode; the racy style, so smooth, so elegant, so simple when the educated are speaking, beguile the reader and blind him, at first, to the many discrepancies and incoherences with which the text, as we have it, is marred. The more one concentrates upon this author, the more apparent these faults become and the more one regrets the lacunae in the text. Notwithstanding numerous articles which deal with this work, some from the pens of the most profound scholars, its author is still shrouded in the mists of uncertainty and conjecture. He is as impersonal as Shakespeare, as aloof as Flaubert, in the opinion of Charles Whibley, and, it may be added, as genial as Rabelais; an enigmatic genius whose secret will never be laid bare with the resources at our present command. Elizabeth I was queen regnant of England and Ireland from 17 November 1558 until her death. Sometimes called "The Virgin Queen", "Gloriana" or "Good Queen Bess", Elizabeth was the fifth and last monarch of the Tudor dynasty. The daughter of Henry VIII, she was born into the royal succession, but her mother, Anne Boleyn, was executed two and a half years after her birth, with Anne's marriage to Henry VIII being annulled, and Elizabeth hence declared illegitimate. Her half-brother, Edward VI, ruled as king until his death in 1553, whereupon he bequeathed the crown to Lady Jane Grey, cutting his two half-sisters, Elizabeth and the Roman Catholic Mary, out of the succession in spite of statute law to the contrary. His will was set aside, Mary became queen, and Lady Jane Grey was executed. In 1558, Elizabeth succeeded her half-sister, during whose reign she had been imprisoned for nearly a year on suspicion of supporting Protestant rebels.
Elizabeth set out to rule by good counsel, and she depended heavily on a group of trusted advisers led by William Cecil, Baron Burghley. One of her first moves as queen was the establishment of an English Protestant church, of which she became the Supreme Governor. This Elizabethan Religious Settlement later evolved into today's Church of England. It was expected that Elizabeth would marry and produce an heir so as to continue the Tudor line. She never did, however, despite numerous courtships. As she grew older, Elizabeth became famous for her virginity, and a cult grew up around her which was celebrated in the portraits, pageants, and literature of the day.
In government, Elizabeth was more moderate than her father and half-siblings had been. One of her mottoes was "video et taceo" ("I see, and say nothing"). In religion she was relatively tolerant, avoiding systematic persecution. After 1570, when the pope declared her illegitimate and released her subjects from obedience to her, several conspiracies threatened her life. All plots were defeated, however, with the help of her ministers' secret service. Elizabeth was cautious in foreign affairs, moving between the major powers of France and Spain. She only half-heartedly supported a number of ineffective, poorly resourced military campaigns in the Netherlands, France, and Ireland. In the mid-1580s, war with Spain could no longer be avoided, and when Spain finally decided to attempt to conquer England in 1588, the failure of the Spanish Armada associated her with one of the greatest military victories in English history. The story opens up with the funeral procession of King Sibri through the streets of Babylon and describes the actions succeeding his death, the revolt of the people and the disenchantment of the gods. Mentions the arrival of the new heir of the throne and his mother in a secret way following the funeral procession, the process of the rituals and their mishaps in the city of Babylon.
The book describes the past events that led to the actual events: what happened, how it happened, who was there, what were the consequences, who said what, etc,... Mylitta, the mother of Duzi, (the new heir to the throne) is the star of the story. It is her actions and her contacts that got her son into the kingdom crown plus the fatalities of the closest of kin. The high priest and the will of the gods played a big part in this success when Militta, Duzi and Hisham, the high priest went into their temples to pray and to ask for guidance in these matters.
The angry gods appeared smiling and agreed in Duzi's succession to the kingdom with one condition: the death of the demon Pridell who inhabited the earth in the physical form of a ferocious bird-like dinosaurus, which lived in a cave seven moons away from the city of Babylon. The gods were disgusted with the demon because it would take away, steal and rapture the souls of the god's worshipers leaving them empty handed.
There is a detailed description of the battle that took place sending Duzi into victory and claiming the crown of the kingdom.
After that, Duzi travels the world learning other cultures, traditions, cuisines, music and folklore and he finds himself in Athens, Greece. He meets a mysterious man named Paul (the Jew) who prietches about an Unknown God and Duzi has a real out of this world experience with this God of the Jews, he repents, accepts the Truth and transforms his life entirely. The scales of blindness fall off from his eyes and everything he knew about good and evil is revealed to him. He returns to Babylon to find out that the entire kingdom of evil: all the deities of Babylon have declared war on him, his descendants and the people of Babylon. The gods send them a plague of blood turning the rivers into blood, Duzi prays to the Unknown God and the blood disappears. Horatio Alger, Jr. (January 13, 1832 – July 18, 1899) was a prolific 19th-century American author, best known for his many juvenile novels about impoverished boys and their rise from humble backgrounds to lives of middle-class security and comfort through hard work, determination, courage, and honesty. His writings were characterized by the "rags-to-riches" narrative, which had a formative effect on America during the Gilded Age. Alger's name is often invoked incorrectly as though he himself rose from rags to riches, but that arc applied to his characters, not to the author. Essentially, all of Alger's novels share the same theme: a young boy struggles through hard work to escape poverty. Critics, however, are quick to point out that it is not the hard work itself that rescues the boy from his fate, but rather some extraordinary act of bravery or honesty, which brings him into contact with a wealthy elder gentleman, who takes the boy in as a ward. The boy might return a large sum of money that was lost or rescue someone from an overturned carriage, bringing the boy—and his plight—to the attention of some wealthy individual. About the Author
Eliot H. Bailey was born on Wednesday August 10th 1983 at 3 a.m. on the beautiful Caribbean island of St. Lucia - an island that has produced two Nobel laureates. His parents, both educators, have devoted their lives to teaching the arts. Eliot was named after T.S. Eliot - "one 'l', one 't'" - as he was wont, from the tender age of eighteen months, to inform all and sundry who might ask his name. Eliot was a curious child who started talking when he was about ten months. As a young boy, he asked questions galore and spouted creative ideas. Being British (as well as St Lucian), he would spend his summers back in his father's homeland of England visiting family and, in his teens, chose to live there on his own for a year. It was during this time that he was moved to chronicling his days and jotting down his thoughts on life and the parade of characters that crossed his path. Hi everyone! I’m sorry it’s been a little while since I’ve posted. I have been a little busy with school, marketing, and other things that plague my days. The good news is that I have now taken off from school for the next two and a half months so that I can focus on Forbidden, and it’s sequels, and some other things i’m now interested in (sorry those are top secret and may or may not have something to do with a new book idea). Since I’ve posted I’ve been interviewed by yet another news paper, but the article hasn’t been put out yet. When it does though I’ll be sure to post it here! I’m so excited to be back to blogging, and I hope I can keep it up this time because I love talking to all of you! I wanted to jump back into blogging by announcing that in 7 days one of my top two favorite months is going to arrive, and the reason why I love November so much is not only because of Thanksgiving, but also because it is National Novel Writing Month! And now you know the reason for my freaky title. National Novel Writing Month. So I’ll admit the acronym is kind of weird, but still NaNoWriMo is one of my favorite things because it encourages my all time favorite thing…..writing a novel. Here’s the cool thing about this; just like November itself NaNoWriMo happens every year, and it encourages anyone who loves writing to write a novel in a month! Yep a month; 30 days! The goal is to write a 50,000 worded rough draft, just so you know this count evens out to 200 pages, that’s a little under half of the number of pages in Forbidden. You write your novel through their site and you can find encouragement there as well, it will help you keep up with your word count and as you complete the steps throughout the site you earn badges! It’s a really fun and exciting way to finish a novel and it’s something that I wish I’d have been encouraged to do myself. The best part about this is NaNoWriMo is for everyone! Anyone can write a novel through this website all you have to do is signup, get inspired and start writing! If your all interested you can go to nanowrimo.org and learn more about the National Novel Writing Month, and if you really want to try to win the challenge you can signup and get started! You can even find testimonials from others who’ve participated and see if you can relate! Remember believe in yourself, and if you think you can finish this challenge or even if your not sure go for it. You never know what will happen unless you try, and I believe that if anyone truly loves to write then they can write a novel! If I’d have found this sooner I’d have probably finished Forbidden a lot sooner than I did. So go check it out! Remember, writing is not easy! So I’m not saying that in no way this is going to be easy.
