Henry James, OM (15 April 1843 – 28 February 1916) was an American-English writer who spent most of his writing career in Britain. He is regarded as one of the key figures of 19th-century literary realism. He was the son of Henry James, Sr. and the brother of philosopher and psychologist William James and diarist Alice James. James alternated between America and Europe for the first 20 years of his life; eventually he settled in England, becoming a British subject in 1915, one year before his death. He is best known for a number of novels showing Americans encountering Europe and Europeans. His method of writing from the point of view of a character within a tale allows him to explore issues related to consciousness and perception, and his style in later works has been compared to impressionist painting. James contributed significantly to literary criticism, particularly in his insistence that writers be allowed the greatest possible freedom in presenting their view of the world. James claimed that a text must first and foremost be realistic and contain a representation of life that is recognisable to its readers. Good novels, to James, show life in action and are, most importantly, interesting. His imaginative use of point of view, interior monologue and unreliable narrators in his own novels and tales brought a new depth and interest to narrative fiction. An extraordinarily productive writer, in addition to his voluminous works of fiction he published articles and books of travel, biography, autobiography, and criticism, and wrote plays, some of which were performed during his lifetime, though with limited success when compared to the success of his novels. James was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1911, 1912 and 1916.[1] [mehr]

The Kaani want to size us up, before welcoming us into the interstellar community. Unfortunately, we don't quite measure up to their exacting standards. War, poverty and inequality are considered too prevalent within our society for us to be let loose on the universe. The Kaani decide to share some of their knowledge with us, hoping that with a slight nudge we will get our act together. Humanity then embarks upon a golden era, making real steps forward towards solving our most fundamental problems. But it isn't too long before the bad behaviour kicks back in and humanity is back to square one. When the Kaani visit us again, we are not ready to welcome them back, but instead react violently to their arrival. Of course we are no match for their far superior technology and our defenses are compromised easily. The Kaani, fortunately, are not interested in conquering us, but instead want to educate us. Therefore, they decide to take a selection of our children to their home-world on a fact-finding mission. Johnathon and Cleetus are among this group of children and we follow their adventures as they explore their own humanity and question whether or not we can ever measure up to the exacting standards of the Kaani. What starts of as a humorous look at what it means to be human, gradually gets darker as we explore how our failures as a society may be linked to hierarchies and power structures. Is the key to a free and peaceful society the rejection of accepted authority, and how will those with power react to their way of life being threatened? [mehr]

The reproducibility of facts is the hallmark of a natural science, the impossibility of counting up to infinity that of a measuring process, and the "law of great numbers" that of statistics. A statement like "Nothing will come from nothing, and nothing gets lost" will yield conservation laws. Bell's own interpretation of his no-go theorems, then, will directly give Quantum Gravity, and its iteration the unification of all types of forces of nature ("New Physics"). The present paper will outline the reasoning of Quantum Gravity and of New Physics rather than their technical details - as far as all that allows for separating those issues from each other. Thermodynamic principles are imposing 2 alternative channels to us: A closed system will yield the reaction channel conserving probabilty, and an open system the dynamic channel. Causality will mark the open channel, entanglement the reaction channel. Parities are the key to understanding a black hole free of singularities. Space, time, and mass can be counted from the non-valence parts of a particle as occurrence rates of special double-quant properties; Higgs is dispensable. The spectrum of stable particles derives from the representation of our static multiverse. Its building universes give us the illusion of motion (like by a flip book). Lagrange's formalism and its canonical quantization prove as classical dead locks of obsolete centuries. The multitude of positive results - like the fine-structure constant calculated correctly, e.g. - speak in favour of New Physics, the total absence of "broken" quantum numbers in favour of a deeper "understanding" of nature. Beyond Good and Evil is a book by philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. It draws on and expands the ideas of his previous work, Thus Spoke Zarathustra, but with a more critical and polemical approach. In Beyond Good and Evil, Nietzsche accuses past philosophers of lacking critical sense and blindly accepting dogmatic premises in their consideration of morality. Specifically, he accuses them of founding grand metaphysical systems upon the faith that the good man is the opposite of the evil man, rather than just a different expression of the same basic impulses that find more direct expression in the evil man. The work moves into the realm "beyond good and evil" in the sense of leaving behind the traditional morality which Nietzsche subjects to a destructive critique in favor of what he regards as an affirmative approach that fearlessly confronts the perspectival nature of knowledge and the perilous condition of the modern individual. Of the four "late-period" writings of Nietzsche, Beyond Good and Evil most closely resembles the aphoristic style of his middle period. In it he exposes the deficiencies of those usually called "philosophers" and identifies the qualities of the "new philosophers": imagination, self-assertion, danger, originality, and the "creation of values". He then contests some of the key presuppositions of the old philosophic tradition like "self-consciousness," "knowledge," "truth," and "free will", explaining them as inventions of the moral consciousness. In their place he offers the "will to power" as an explanation of all behavior; this ties into his "perspective of life", which he regards as "beyond good and evil", denying a universal morality for all human beings. Religion and the master and slave moralities feature prominently as Nietzsche re-evaluates deeply held humanistic beliefs, portraying even domination, appropriation and injury to the weak as not universally objectionable. Ethics is a philosophical treatise written by Baruch Spinoza. The book closely resembles Euclid's Elements. At the beginning of Part 1, Spinoza defines key terms and lists axioms. On the basis of these and other definitions and axioms provided in the remaining four parts of the book, Spinoza offers proofs of hundreds of propositions and corollaries, such as "When the Mind imagines its own lack of power, it is saddened by it", "A free man thinks of nothing less than of death", and "The human Mind cannot be absolutely destroyed with the Body, but something of it remains which is eternal." God or Nature consists of Attributes. God, as the complete system of Attributes, is absolutely infinite or complete; each Attribute is only infinite in its kind. By Attribute Spinoza means an ultimate or irreducible quality or energy. He names two such attributes, namely, Extension and Thought, but he allows for the possibility of an infinity of Attributes. The attributes do not belong to, but are identical with, Substance. Reality, moreover, is essentially dynamic, not static — to be is to be doing. Thus the Attribute Extension is really the whole of material energy, and the Attribute Thought is the whole of mind-energy. All material things and events are changing modes or states of Extension; and all mental events or experiences are similarly modifications or states of Thought. Each Attribute exhausts its kind of reality, in an ultimate character, activity or "world-line" of Nature, and gives rise to its entire series of objects and events in accordance with its own laws. These finite objects and events are real enough while they last, but as finite modes they change and pass; not, however, into mere nothingness, for the attribute, of which they are states, abides.
