He was born in Edinburgh, the son of James Stuart Geikie and younger brother of Sir Archibald Geikie. He was educated at the Royal High School, Edinburgh and University of Edinburgh. He served on the Geological Survey from 1862 until 1882, when be succeeded his brother as Murchison professor of geology and mineralogy at the University of Edinburgh. He took as his special subject of investigation the origin of surface-features, and the part played in their formation by glacial action. His views are embodied in his chief work, The Great Ice Age and its Relation to the Antiquity of Man (1874; 3rd ed., 1894). [mehr]

The present work, however, is the outcome of the need of a text-book of very simple outline, in which causes and their consequences should be knit together as closely as possible,--a need long felt by the author in his teaching, and perhaps by other teachers also. The author has ventured, therefore, to depart from the common usage which subdivides geology into a number of departments,--dynamical, structural, physiographic, and historical,--and to treat in immediate connection with each geological process the land forms and the rock structures which it has produced. Sir Charles Lyell, 1st Baronet, FRS (14 November 1797 – 22 February 1875) was a British lawyer and the foremost geologist of his day. He is best known as the author of Principles of Geology, which popularised James Hutton's concepts of uniformitarianism – the idea that the Earth was shaped by the same processes still in operation today. Principles of Geology also challenged theories popularized by George Cuvier, which were the most accepted and circulated ideas about geology in England at the time.[1] Lyell was also one of the first to believe that the world is older than 300 million years, on the basis of its geological anomalies.
