William Godwin (3 March 1756 – 7 April 1836) was an English journalist, political philosopher and novelist. He is considered one of the first exponents of utilitarianism, and the first modern proponent of anarchism.[1] Godwin is most famous for two books that he published within the space of a year: An Enquiry Concerning Political Justice, an attack on political institutions, and Things as They Are; or, The Adventures of Caleb Williams, which attacks aristocratic privilege, but also is the first mystery novel. Based on the success of both, Godwin featured prominently in the radical circles of London in the 1790s. In the ensuing conservative reaction to British radicalism, Godwin was attacked, in part because of his marriage to the pioneering feminist writer Mary Wollstonecraft in 1797 and his candid biography of her after her death; their daughter, Mary Godwin (later Mary Shelley) would go on to write Frankenstein and marry the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. Godwin wrote prolifically in the genres of novels, history and demography throughout his lifetime. With his second wife, Mary Jane Clairmont, he wrote children's primers on Biblical and classical history, which he published along with such works as Charles and Mary Lamb's Tales from Shakespeare. Using the pseudonym Edward Baldwin, he wrote a variety of books for children, including a version of Jack and the Beanstalk.[2] He also has had considerable influence on British literature and literary culture. William Spalding (22 May 1809 – 16 November 1859) was a Scottish writer and academic. For the last twenty years of his life he served as professor of rhetoric and logic, in addition to authoring essays, reviews and historical texts.[1]
Born in Aberdeen, to advocate James Spalding and his wife, Frances Read, young William was educated in the city's grammar school and at Marischal College. Moving to Edinburgh in 1830, he read law and was called to the bar in 1833. In that year he published a Letter on Shakespeare's Authorship of the Two Noble Kinsmen (reprinted for New Shakspere Society in 1876, seventeen years after his death), which attracted the notice of leading literary critic Francis Jeffrey, who invited Spalding to contribute to the Edinburgh Review.[2][3] Having devoted much time to studying Shakespeare and other Elizabethan dramatists, he continued to write on these topics for the Review. His other writings included contributions to Blackwood's Magazine and the eighth edition (1853–60) of the Encyclopædia Britannica, which contains his biographical entries on Joseph Addison, Francis Bacon, Demosthenes, Sir Walter Scott and Torquato Tasso as well as articles on fable, fallacy, logic, rhetoric and slavery.[4] He also authored a concise History of English Literature, published in 1853.[2] [mehr]

Dominique Bergmann, der Name war Marianne schon beim einchecken aufgefallen. Es ließ ihr keine Ruhe, sie wollte sie fragen, auch wenn es ihr leicht unangenehm war. „Ja, sie sind Ärztin, nicht wahr? Ich war mal vor vielen Jahren mit meinem Sohn bei ihnen in Behandlung. Dass sie es sein könnten, habe ich auch schon am Flughafen vermutet. Ich hätte sie bestimmt noch darauf angesprochen.“ antwortete Frau Bergmann. Dass sie beide aus Münster kamen, erzeugte ein angenehmes, vertrautes Empfinden von Gemeinsamkeit, und nach wenigen Minuten der Information über ihre jeweiligen persönlichen Identitäten, war man sich einig, dass man füreinander Marianne und Dominique war. Caledonian Canal und Schottland waren schnell vergessen. Wie in einer Kneipe in Münster saß man spannend und lachend erzählend bei dem eigentlich ungenießbaren, teuren Wein, den der Allroundportier bis spät in die Nacht immer wieder nachschenken musste. „Ich glaube, ich werde gleich den ersten Tag nicht überstehen, Annie. Aber du wirst mich dann sicher auffangen, oder kannst du nur Kinder?“ begrüßte Dominique Marianne scherzhaft zum Frühstück. Seit der Nacht war Marianne für Dominique zu Annie geworden. Beide waren sich einig, dass Marianne ein schrecklicher Name sei. Marianne hatte hatte sich vorgestellt, den leicht melancholischen Touch der Berge mit tiefhängenden Nebelschwaden und die dunklen Wasser der Lochs einsam wandernd erfassen zu wollen. Dazu kam es allerdings überhaupt nicht. Lachend und sich angeregt unterhaltend bewältigten Dominique und Marianne die Tagesetappen. Was sie gemeinsam redeten und das Verhalten der jeweils Anderen bildeten den Schwerpunkt ihrer Betrachtungen. Die leichte schottische Tristesse hatte keine Chance sich ihnen zu vermitteln. Hexen waren die Frauen, die sich bei Shakespeare nachts in Schottland getroffen hatten. Ob Annie und Dominique auch dazu gehörten? Denn was hier am Caledonian Canal zusammen geschweißt war, ließ sich zu Hause nicht wieder lösen. Wer wollte so etwas denn auch. Die beiden liebten ihr neues, durch die Freundschaft tiefgreifend verändertes Leben. [mehr]

Thomas Platter (the Elder) (10 February 1499, Grächen, Valais – 26 January 1582, Basel) was a Swiss humanist scholar and writer.
His sons Felix Platter and Thomas Platter the Younger both studied medicine, a thwarted ambition of Platter's own early life.[1] Platter the Younger also kept a diary of travels in England which provided Shakespearean scholars with evidence for the dating of certain Shakespeare plays.[2] He wrote: "England is a woman's paradise and a servant's prison" (a quotation from publication by Thomas Platter the Younger, written in October 1599).
Thomas Platter (the Elder) was a master of several languages, knowing Latin, Greek, and Hebrew, among others. He grew up in poverty and, as a student, made a prolonged tour through Germany. After his return he first lived in Zürich, where he was an assistant to reformator Huldrych Zwingli. In 1531 he was an eye-witness of the Battle of Kappel, when Huldrych Zwingli was killed. Considering the political situation in Zürich after this war, he left for Basel, together with his paternal friend and mentor, the Protestant theologian Oswald Myconius. In Basel he earned himself a reputation as an early teacher of ancient languages and humanist studies. Together with Johannes Oporinus and Ruprecht Winter he led a printing house and published a large variety of classical editions.
His autobiography mostly deals with his youth and the history of how he became a well-known humanist scholar. It was read by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, and is one of the finest examples of the German autobiography of this time. [mehr]

The Satyricon is a Latin work of fiction in a mixture of prose and poetry. It is believed to have been written by Gaius Petronius Arbiter, though the manuscript tradition identifies the author as a certain Titus Petronius. As with the Metamorphoses of Apuleius, classical scholars often describe it as a "Roman novel", without necessarily implying continuity with the modern literary form. The surviving portions of the text detail the misadventures of the narrator, Encolpius, and his lover, a handsome sixteen-year-old boy named Giton. Throughout the novel, Encolpius has a hard time keeping his lover faithful to him as he is constantly being enticed away by others. Encolpius's friend Ascyltus (who seems to have previously been in a relationship with Encolpius) is another major character.
Of the many masterpieces which classical antiquity has bequeathed to modern times, few have attained, at intervals, to such popularity; few have so gripped the interest of scholars and men of letters, as has this scintillating miscellany known as the Satyricon, ascribed by tradition to that Petronius who, at the court of Nero, acted as arbiter of elegance and dictator of fashion. The flashing, wit, the masterly touches which bring out the characters with all the detail of a fine old copper etching; the marvelous use of realism by this, its first prophet; the sure knowledge of the perspective and background best adapted to each episode; the racy style, so smooth, so elegant, so simple when the educated are speaking, beguile the reader and blind him, at first, to the many discrepancies and incoherences with which the text, as we have it, is marred. The more one concentrates upon this author, the more apparent these faults become and the more one regrets the lacunae in the text. Notwithstanding numerous articles which deal with this work, some from the pens of the most profound scholars, its author is still shrouded in the mists of uncertainty and conjecture. He is as impersonal as Shakespeare, as aloof as Flaubert, in the opinion of Charles Whibley, and, it may be added, as genial as Rabelais; an enigmatic genius whose secret will never be laid bare with the resources at our present command.
