Joseph Noad (ca 1797 – February 20, 1873) was a public official in Newfoundland. He was a member of the Legislative Council of Newfoundland from 1842 to 1845 and from 1848 to 1855.[1] Born in England, Noad came to Newfoundland and, soon afterwards in August 1832, was named surveyor general for the colony. He was a member of the Executive Council from 1842 to 1855. He was also a director of the Newfoundland Steam Navigation Company. Noad was married twice: he married his second wife Emma Gaden Lilly; in 1935. After he was forced into retirement from his appointed positions in 1855 by the introduction of responsible government, he moved to Woodstock, Canada West, where he died in 1873.[1] In 1859, he published Lecture On The Aborigines Of Newfoundland. The Adjacent Part Of The Coast Is Also The Landing-Place For Most Of The Transatlantic Cables: It Was At St. John's, Too, That The First Wireless Ocean Signals Were Received. From The Sentimental Point Of View Newfoundland Is The Oldest Of The English Colonies, For Our Brave Fishermen Were Familiar With Its Banks At A Time When Virginia And New England Were Given Over To Solitude And The Redskin. Commercially It Is The Centre Of The Most Bountiful Fishing Industry In The World, And The Great Potential Wealth Of Its Mines Is Now Beyond Question. On All These Grounds The Story Of The Colony Is One With Which Every Citizen Of Greater Britain Should Be Familiar. The Historians Of The Island Have Been Capable And In The Main Judicious, And To The Works Of Reeves, Bonnycastle, Pedley, Hatton, Harvey, And Above All Chief Justice Prowse, And More Recently To J.D. Rogers,[1] Every Writer On Newfoundland Must Owe Much. Of Such Elaborate Work A Writer In The Present Series May Say With Virgil's Shepherd, "Non Invideo, Miror Magis"; For Such A One Is Committed Only To A Sketch, Made Lighter By Their Labours, Of The Chief Stages In The Story Of Newfoundland. Church was the son of Eliza (née Janes) and Joseph Church. The family's wealth came from Church's father, a silversmith and watchmaker in Hartford, Connecticut. (Joseph subsequently also became an official and a director of The Aetna Life Insurance Company.) Joseph, in turn, was the son of Samuel Church, who founded the first paper mill in Lee, Massachusetts in the Berkshires. The family's wealth allowed Frederic Church to pursue his interest in art from a very early age. At eighteen years of age, Church became the pupil of Thomas Cole[1] in Catskill, New York after Daniel Wadsworth, a family neighbor and founder of the Wadsworth Athenaeum, introduced the two. In May 1849, Church was elected as the youngest Associate of the National Academy of Design and was promoted to Academician the following year. Soon after, he sold his first major work to Hartford's Wadsworth Athenaeum. [mehr]

When my Grandfather Gough enlisted to fight and left his home outport of Elliston, Newfoundland in WW 1, he was a innocent boy. By the end of WW 1 he was a shattered man, who had lost the main illusions of his life. Yet, he managed to write brave letters from the front; letters that reflected his life and times in such a way that I want what he said to be available for free, for us all - so we may all avoid war in all times forever. My grandfather never glorified war to me, he warned me against it, told me to avoid fighting for belief; he regretted the killing he did, mourned those he'd shot & bayoneted, and was straight-ahead honest about his life-long opinion that to kill is wrong - period. I write of his war in other books, in this one it's time to share with the world what he wrote in his period of learning. I ask to remember, as you read them, the time in which he lived, & to consider the falsehoods that were told him in order to have him fight. Those were terrible times of a war that could have been avoided. [mehr]
