Yes, we could have and should have pulled out of Vietnam in 1965. We didn't.
By 1968 we were so deep, it took five years to get out.

Could HHH done better? Maybe.

I tried SO HARD not to be this parent. My daughter set up some firm boundaries
at the very beginning of the process--there were designated times for me to
talk about college and times to NOT talk about college. Other than a few minor
freakouts on my part-- I did ok. She graded me--a solid B+. As for other
parents I played the ""single parent"" card pretty hard--Ivy League--can't
afford it; SAT tutoring--can't afford it; applying to 10 colleges--can't
afford it. They got really tired of talking to me. (And talk all you want
about financial aid, the Ivy League and other selective schools count both
parents' incomes, step-parents' income and the Fin Aid officer at Penn
suggested I take out a second mortgage to pay tuition so they got dropped from
the list really fast!)
