The Musketeers: Complete D'Artagnan Series by Alexandre Dumas. lexandre Dumas (1802–1870) was a French writer. The complete adventures of d'Artagnan are told in the D'Artagnan Series that includes The Three Musketeers, Twenty Years After, The Vicomte of Bragelonne, Ten Years Later, Louise de la Valliere and The Man in the Iron Mask. Those novels by Dumas are together known as the d'Artagnan Romances. Set in the 17th century, it recounts the adventures of a young man named d'Artagnan after he leaves home to travel to Paris, to join the Musketeers of the Guard. D'Artagnan is not one of the musketeers of the title; those are his friends Athos, Porthos and Aramis, inseparable friends who live by the motto "all for one, one for all", a motto which is first put forth by d'Artagnan. Dumas based the life and character of d'Artagnan on the 17th-century captain of musketeers Charles de Batz-Castelmore from his humble beginnings in Gascony to his death as a marshal of France in the Siege of Maastricht in 1673. The prisoner, however, doesn't have anything to confess, because his only crime is being the King of France's twin brother. Aramis happens to be one of the few people in France who knows this secret. Aramis wastes no time in putting together a plan to free this prisoner and swap him for the legitimate king. Once the former prisoner becomes king, Aramis hopes to be rewarded by being appointed adviser to the King, prime minister, or even pope. Meanwhile, let's get up to speed on the situation with the real King. We have a colorful cast of characters at court. There's King Louis's mother, Anne of Austria, his younger brother (known as Monsieur, with a capital 'M'), his wife Maria Theresa, and his mistress, a woman named La Valliere. Then there's the Superintendent of Finances, a man by the name of Fouquet, who's throwing a party at Vaux in an attempt to ingratiate himself with the King. Pressé, le comte s’entretenait avec Milady de Winter. Sortant de son entrevue avec M. de Tréville, D’Artagnan bouscule et se chamaille avec chacun des trois mousquetaires, ce qui lui vaut un duel avec chacun d'eux au Luxembourg. Sur le lieu de leur affrontement, les quatre hommes sont surpris par les gardes du cardinal et pactisent alors pour les combattre sous le cri de « Tous pour un, un pour tous ». Les gardes sont accompagnés de Lord de Winter, le beau-frère de Milady, qui combat à leur coté contre D’Artagnan. Mais finalement, les deux hommes fraternisent et le Lord invite le gascon chez sa sœur qui tombe sous son charme.
