ir Edward Anwyl (5 August 1866 – 8 August 1914) was a Welsh academic, specializing in the Celtic languages. Anwyl was born in Chester, England, and educated at the King's School, Chester. He went on to study at Oriel College, Oxford, and Mansfield College, Oxford. Professor Johann Georg Bühler (July 19, 1837 – April 8, 1898) was a scholar of ancient Indian languages and law. Bühler was born to Rev. Johann G. Bühler in Borstel, Hanover, attended high school in Hanover where he mastered Greek and Latin, then university as a student of theology and philosophy at Göttingen, where he studied classical philology, Sanskrit, Zend, Persian, Armenian, and Arabic. In 1858 he received his doctorate in eastern languages and archaeology; his thesis explored the suffix -tês in Greek grammar. John Matthews Manly (September 2, 1865 — April 2, 1940) was an American professor of English literature and philology at the University of Chicago. Manly specialized in the study of the works of William Shakespeare and Geoffrey Chaucer. His eight-volume work, The Text of the Canterbury Tales (1940), written in collaboration with his former student Edith Rickert, has been cited as a definitive study of Chaucer's works.[1] Manley was born in Virginia the son of Charles Manly, a Baptist minister and university president. Ernest Bernbaum (February 12, 1879–March 8, 1958) was an English educator, scholar, author and an opponent of the Suffragette movement. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., the son of Ole Kruse and Dorothea Christiansen, Ernest was educated at Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute.[1] He attended Harvard University, where he was awarded a Ph.D. in philology in 1907. He taught English at Harvard from 1907–1916, then joined the staff of the University of Illinois. From 1917-1919, he was chair of the Committee on War Lectures at Illinois. Entering the University of Bonn in 1819, Hengstenberg attended the lectures of Georg Wilhelm Freytag for Oriental languages and of Johann Karl Ludwig Gieseler for church history, but his energies were principally devoted to philosophy and philology, and his earliest publication was an edition of the Arabic Mu'allaqat of Imru' al-Qais, which gained for him a prize at his graduation in the philosophical faculty.
