William Curtis (11 January 1746 – 7 July 1799) was an English botanist and entomologist, who was born at Alton, Hampshire.
Curtis began as an apothecary, before turning his attention to botany and other natural history. The publications he prepared effectively reached a wider audience than early works on the subject had intended.[1] At the age of 25 he produced Instructions for collecting and preserving insects; particularly moths and butterflies.[2]
Curtis was demonstrator of plants and Praefectus Horti at the Chelsea Physic Garden from 1771 to 1777. He established his own London Botanic Garden at Lambeth in 1779, moving to Brompton in 1789. He published Flora Londinensis (6 volumes, 1777–1798), a pioneering work in that it devoted itself to urban nature. Financial success was not found, but he went on the publish The Botanical Magazine in 1787, a work that would also feature hand coloured plates by artists such as James Sowerby, Sydenham Edwards, and William Kilburn. Alexander Ivanovitch Petrunkevitch (Russian: Александр Иванович Петранкевич, born December 22, 1875 in Pliski near Kiev, now Ukraine – died March 9, 1964 New Haven) was an eminent Russianarachnologist of his time. From 1910 to 1939 he described over 130 spider species. One of his most famous essays was "The Spider and the Wasp." In it he uses effective word choices and some comic touch.
Biography[edit]
His aristocratic father, Ivan Illitch Petrunkevitch, was a liberal member of the First Duma and founded the Constitutional Democratic Party. After finishing his studies in Moscow and in Freiburg under August Weismann, Alexander settled in Yale in 1910, becoming a full professor in 1917. Apart from describing present-day species, he was a major figure in the study of fossil arachnids, including those in amber and from the Coal Measures. He also experimented with live specimens and worked on insects. He was elected to the National Academy of Science in 1954. Throughout his career he remained politically active, trying to increase awareness of problems in Russia. He was also a skilled machinist and wrote two volumes of poetry (under the pseudonym Alexandr Jan-Ruban), and translated Pushkin into the English language, andByron into Russian. "He was about to start on a new set when he discovered he was low on wood. There was a little piece of African blackwood but all the ebony was gone on the last set. He was pleased about them – they played beautifully. They’d gone to Australia poor things. The heat, what would it do to them? Still at least the chap could play. Uillean pipes are sensitive to humidity. They might be alright. Where was it they went? Brisbane, it was humid there, subtropical, the chap had said.
“Dermot,” the call came again. This time he heeded it and went through to the kitchen. His workshop, a converted garage, was right next to the kitchen. Handy in some ways but it meant you were a little too accessible.
“You planning another set? said Niave his wife.
“It’s the wood, I’ve run short.” he replied.
“You know,” said Niave who was a primary teacher, "my class are doing the rainforest right now and these tropical hardwoods you use are from the rainforest.”
“So? He said.
“Well, they take a long time to grow, especially that African Blackwood and Ebony, and that Brazilian mahogany.”
Dermot sighed. His wife often saw a moral issue in the everyday things of life.
“But Niave, you see, they’re the best for the pipes. African Blackwood gives a good crisp sound and Ebony, well it gives a little softer, mellower tone.”
“What will you do when there’s none left? She retorted. And another thing; each tree supports lots of other creatures, insects, birds, frogs.”
“Frogs! Get away.”

Charles Grant Blairfindie Allen (February 24, 1848 – October 25, 1899) was a Canadian science writer and novelist, and a successful upholder of the theory of evolution.[1]
He was born near Kingston, Canada West (now incorporated into Ontario), the second son of Catharine Ann Grant and the Rev. Joseph Antisell Allen, a Protestant minister from Dublin, Ireland.[2] His mother was a daughter of the fifth Baron of Longueuil. He was educated at home until, at age 13, he and his parents moved to the United States, then France and finally the United Kingdom.[3] He was educated at King Edward's School in Birmingham and Merton College in Oxford, both in the United Kingdom.[4] After graduation, Allen studied in France, taught at Brighton College in 1870–71 and in his mid-twenties became a professor at Queen's College, a black college in Jamaica.
Despite his religious father, Allen became an agnostic and a socialist. After leaving his professorship, in 1876 he returned to England, where he turned his talents to writing, gaining a reputation for his essays on science and for literary works. One of his early articles, 'Note-Deafness' (a description of what is now called amusia, published in 1878 in the learned journal Mind) is cited with approval in a recent book by Oliver Sacks.[5]
His first books were on scientific subjects, and include Physiological Æsthetics (1877) and Flowers and Their Pedigrees (1886). He was first influenced by associationist psychology as it was expounded by Alexander Bain and Herbert Spencer, the latter often considered the most important individual in the transition from associationist psychology to Darwinian functionalism. In Allen's many articles on flowers and perception in insects, Darwinian arguments replaced the old Spencerian terms. On a personal level, a long friendship that started when Allen met Spencer on his return from Jamaica, also grew uneasy over the years. Allen wrote a critical and revealing biographical article on Spencer that was published after Spencer was dead.
After assisting Sir W. W. Hunter in his Gazeteer of India in the early 1880s, Allen turned his attention to fiction, and between 1884 and 1899 produced about 30 novels. In 1895, his scandalous book titled The Woman Who Did, promulgating certain startling views on marriage and kindred questions, became a bestseller. The book told the story of an independent woman who has a child out of wedlock.[6] [mehr]

Pyrain - A human like creature, skin colour varies from blue with black strips to green with black stripes depending on the particular race. Hair is crimson red, all Pyrains posses the ability to transform (lit) their hair to flames an instinctive mechanism to suite their habitat. They are purely Omnivores.
Beast - They are carnivorous (feed mostly on Pyrain) lone ranger flying creatures (lords of the air), hunting only at daylight; they live in constant fear of the Moon Soldiers. The Beast appearance looks like a lion accompanied with giant Eagle wings, its posses an armored skin impenetrable to any sort of weapon except that of the Moon Soldiers.
Inn - Small rodents typically resembling diminutive Rats having pointed snouts and small ears but no tail. They are the Monarchs of Venus.
Liputan - A blue to grey social insect living underground in organized colonies, characteristically the females have wings excluding the males, They are extremely fast insects.
Moon Soldiers - A fine luster of moon dust appearing to be men. They are a military unit serving to protect Amity.
Antox - A toxic plant known as the Clingy lady. It grows typically from 30-65 centimeters. Symptoms are generally irritation, pain, swelling of tissues and paralysis. If the mouth or tongue swells, breathing may be fatally blocked leading to death.
Amity - A demi-goddess of the moon.
Other organisms include Giant worms (Ferroworms and Flunaworms), Carnivorous Plants and double headed horned Vipers. [mehr]

The sun was shedding its light; the grass, revivified, was blooming forth, where it was left uncut, not only on the greenswards of the boulevard, but between the flag-stones, and the birches, poplars and wild-berry trees were unfolding their viscous leaves; the limes were unfolding their buds; the daws, sparrows and pigeons were joyfully making their customary nests, and the flies were buzzing on the sun-warmed walls. Plants, birds, insects and children were equally joyful. Only men—grown-up men—continued cheating and tormenting themselves and each other. People saw nothing holy in this spring morning, in this beauty of God's world—a gift to all living creatures—inclining to peace, good-will and love, but worshiped their own inventions for imposing their will on each other.
The joy of spring felt by animals and men did not penetrate the office of the county jail, but the one thing of supreme importance there was a document received the previous evening, with title, number and seal, which ordered the bringing into court for trial, this 28th day of April, at nine o'clock in the morning, three prisoners—two [Pg 6]women and one man. One of the women, as the more dangerous criminal, was to be brought separately. So, in pursuance of that order, on the 28th day of April, at eight o'clock in the morning, the jail warden entered the dingy corridor of the woman's ward. Immediately behind him came a woman with weary countenance and disheveled gray hair, wearing a crown-laced jacket, and girdled with a blue-edged sash. She was the matron.
"You want Maslova?" she asked the warden, as they neared one of the cells opening into the corridor.
The warden, with a loud clanking of iron, unlocked and opened the door of the cell, releasing an even fouler odor than permeated the corridor, and shouted:
"Maslova to the court!" and again closing the door he waited for her appearance.
The fresh, vivifying air of the fields, carried to the city by the wind, filled even the court-yard of the jail. But in the corridor the oppressive air, laden with the smell of tar and putrescence, saddened and dejected the spirit of every new-comer. The same feeling was experienced by the jail matron, notwithstanding she was accustomed to bad air. On entering the corridor she suddenly felt a weariness coming over her that inclined her to slumber.
There was a bustling in the cell; women's voices and steps of bare feet were heard.
"Hurry up, Maslova! Come on, I say!" shouted the warden into the cell-door. [mehr]

PREFACE
The Handbook of Medical Entomology is the outgrowth of a course of
lectures along the lines of insect transmission and dissemination of
diseases of man given by the senior author in the Department of
Entomology of Cornell University during the past six years. More
specifically it is an illustrated revision and elaboration of his "Notes
on the Relation of Insects to Disease" published January, 1912.
Its object is to afford a general survey of the field, and primarily to
put the student of medicine and entomology in touch with the discoveries
and theories which underlie some of the most important modern work in
preventive medicine. At the same time the older phases of the
subject--the consideration of poisonous and parasitic forms--have not
been ignored.
Considering the rapid shifts in viewpoint, and the development of the
subject within recent years, the authors do not indulge in any hopes
that the present text will exactly meet the needs of every one
specializing in the field,--still less do they regard it as complete or
final. The fact that the enormous literature of isolated articles is to
be found principally in foreign periodicals and is therefore difficult
of access to many American workers, has led the authors to hope that a
summary of the important advances, in the form of a reference book may
not prove unwelcome to physicians, sanitarians and working
entomologists, and to teachers as a text supplementing lecture work in
the subject.
Lengthy as is the bibliography, it covers but a very small fraction of
the important contributions to the subject. It will serve only to put
those interested in touch with original sources and to open up the
field. Of the more general works, special acknowledgment should be made
to those of Banks, Brumpt, Castellani and Chalmers, Comstock, Hewitt,
Howard, Manson, Mense, Neveau-Lemaire, Nuttall, and Stiles.
