George Frost Kennan (February 16, 1904 – March 17, 2005) was an American adviser, diplomat, political scientist, and historian, best known as "the father of containment" and as a key figure in the emergence of the Cold War. He later wrote standard histories of the relations between Soviet Union and the Western powers. He was also a core member of the group of foreign policy elders known as "The Wise Men".
In the late 1940s, his writings inspired the Truman Doctrine and the U.S. foreign policy of "containing" the Soviet Union, thrusting him into a lifelong role as a leading authority on the Cold War. His "Long Telegram"[1] from Moscow in 1946 and the subsequent 1947 article "The Sources of Soviet Conduct" argued that the Soviet regime was inherently expansionist and that its influence had to be "contained" in areas of vital strategic importance to the United States. These texts quickly emerged as foundation texts of the Cold War, expressing the Truman administration's new anti-Soviet Union policy. Kennan also played a leading role in the development of definitive Cold War programs and institutions, notably the Marshall Plan. [mehr]

Mary Wollstonecraft (/ˈwʊlstən.krɑːft/; 27 April 1759 – 10 September 1797) was an eighteenth-century English writer, philosopher, and advocate of women's rights. During her brief career, she wrote novels, treatises, a travel narrative, a history of the French Revolution, a conduct book, and a children's book. Wollstonecraft is best known for A Vindication of the Rights of Woman (1792), in which she argues that women are not naturally inferior to men, but appear to be only because they lack education. She suggests that both men and women should be treated as rational beings and imagines a social order founded on reason.
Until the late 20th century, Wollstonecraft's life, which encompassed several unconventional personal relationships, received more attention than her writing. After two ill-fated affairs, with Henry Fuseli and Gilbert Imlay (by whom she had a daughter, Fanny Imlay), Wollstonecraft married the philosopher William Godwin, one of the forefathers of the anarchist movement. Wollstonecraft died at the age of thirty-eight, ten days after giving birth to her second daughter, leaving behind several unfinished manuscripts. Her daughter Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin would become an accomplished writer herself, as Mary Shelley, the author of Frankenstein.
After Wollstonecraft's death, her widower published a Memoir (1798) of her life, revealing her unorthodox lifestyle, which inadvertently destroyed her reputation for almost a century. However, with the emergence of the feminist movement at the turn of the twentieth century, Wollstonecraft's advocacy of women's equality and critiques of conventional femininity became increasingly important. Today Wollstonecraft is regarded as one of the founding feminist philosophers, and feminists often cite both her life and work as important influences. [mehr]

Im vergangenen Jahr veröffentlichten wir mit dem Kurzgeschichtenband »Neue Leute«, dem Roman »Und plötzlich kam kein Morgen«, dem Zeitzeugenbericht »Die letzten Tage Gerhart Hauptmanns« und dem Debussy-Roman »La Mer« Belletristiktitel, die Bestand haben und den Charakter des Zeitlosen tragen. Auch in diesem Jahr wird es in unserem Programm wieder eine Reihe von Belletristik-Titeln geben, die Sie hoffentlich ebenso begeistern werden wie uns. Da wären zunächst das Theaterstück »Das andere Gesicht« und das Reisetagebuch »Götter, Wodka und Piraten« zu nennen. Die Texte stammen von einem Leipziger Paar, das sich auf unterschiedliche Weise, aber gleichwohl mit Leidenschaft der
Schreibkunst verpflichtet hat. Die Rede ist von dem Autor und Essayisten Werner Heiduczek und der Journalistin Traudel Thalheim. Des Weiteren wollen wir Ihnen mit dem Lesebuch »Das halbvolle Glas« den Schriftsteller Erich Loest als Chronist näher bringen und sein Werk als das eines wahren
Geschichtsschreibers würdigen. Dass etwas nachzuerzählen, durchaus auch seine komischen Seiten haben kann, beweist
Myk Jung in seiner vor Sprachwitz überschäumenden »Der Herr der Ringe«-Parodie mit dem Titel »Der Herr der Ohrringe«.
Belletristik ist jedoch nur eine Seite unseres vielseitigen Programms. Neben der schöngeistigen Literatur und den Kunstbüchern, wie etwa dem Skizzenbuch von Wolfgang
Mattheuer, hat auch die Buch- und Kulturwissenschaft ihren Platz. Mit »Flachware 2« führen wir eine im letzten Jahr erfolgreich gestartete Anthologie der Leipziger Buchwissenschaft fort. In »Die Vermehrung des Schweigens« wird das Nicht-Sagen als Ausdruck des Protests in der DDR-Literatur untersucht. Was sagt man, wenn man nichts sagt – steckt auch im Schweigen Protest? Diesen Fragen ging Susanne Liermann in ihrer nun veröffentlichten Doktorarbeit nach.
Auch die Kulturwissenschaft treibt neue Blüten in unserem Programm. Mit der Death-In-June-Bandbiografie, der überarbeiteten und übersetzten Doktorarbeit von Alexei
Monroe über NSK und Laibach und dem Tagungsband »State of Emergence« erscheinen langerwartete Veröffentlichungen unseres Imprints Poison Cabinet Press. Provokante Themen werden aufgegriffen, verarbeitet und kontrovers dargelegt. Wir hoffen, Ihren kritischen Geist damit befeuern zu können und Diskussionen anzuregen.
Von Belletristik über kulturwissenschaftliche Themen bis zur Schwarzen Szene haben wir ein vielfältiges Repertoire an neuen Büchern zusammengestellt. Nun wünschen wir Ihnen viel Vergnügen beim Durchstöbern unseres Frühjahresprogrammes 2012. [mehr]
