If any one is in search of accurate information regarding the age of
this earth, or its relation to the sun, moon, and stars, or regarding
the order in which plants and animals have appeared upon it, he is
referred to recent text-books in astronomy, geology, and palæontology.
No one for a moment dreams of referring a serious student of these
subjects to the Bible as a source of information. It is not the object
of the writers of Scripture to impart physical instruction or to enlarge
the bounds of scientific knowledge. But if any one wishes to know what
connection the world has with God, if he seeks to trace back all that
now is to the very fountain-head of life, if he desires to discover some
unifying principle, some illuminating purpose in the history of this
earth, then we confidently refer him to these and the subsequent
chapters of Scripture as his safest, and indeed his only, guide to the
information he seeks. Every writing must be judged by the object the
writer has in view. If the object of the writer of these chapters was to
convey physical information, then certainly it is imperfectly fulfilled.
But if his object was to give an intelligible account of God's relation
to the world and to man, then it must be owned that he has been

Howard Phillips Lovecraft (/ˈlʌvkræft, -ˌkrɑːft/;[1] August 20, 1890 – March 15, 1937)—known as H. P. Lovecraft—was an American author who achieved posthumous fame through his influential works of horror fiction. Virtually unknown and only published in pulp magazines before he died in poverty, he is now regarded as one of the most significant 20th-century authors in his genre.
Lovecraft was born in Providence, Rhode Island, where he spent most of his life. His father was confined to a mental institution when Lovecraft was three years old. His grandfather, a wealthy businessman, enjoyed storytelling and was an early influence. Intellectually precocious but sensitive, Lovecraft began composing rudimentary horror tales by the age of eight, but suffered from overwhelming feelings of anxiety. He encountered problems with classmates in school, and was kept at home by his highly strung and overbearing mother for illnesses that may have been psychosomatic. In high school, Lovecraft was able to better connect with his peers and form friendships. He also involved neighborhood children in elaborate make-believe projects, only regretfully ceasing the activity at seventeen years old. Despite leaving school in 1908 without graduating—he found mathematics particularly difficult—Lovecraft had developed a formidable knowledge of his favored subjects, such as history, linguistics, chemistry, and astronomy. Catherine Cate Coblentz (June 5, 1897 – May 30, 1951) was an American writer, best known for her children's books in the 1930s and 1940s.Originally from Hardwick, Vermont,[clarification needed] Catherine Cate worked during World War I at the National Bureau of Standards in Washington, D.C., where she met her future husband, William Coblentz, an American scientist who was a pioneer in the field of infrared spectroscopy. They were married on June 10, 1924. Two daughters were born to the couple, but both died young.[1]
Coblentz published a poem on Mars in Popular Astronomy magazine in 1924, the same year that her husband was measuring the temperature of Mars at the Lowell Observatory.[2] Mrs. Coblentz later achieved success as a writer of children's books, and her The Blue Cat of Castle Town won the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award in 1958 and was a Newbery Honor book.[3][4] Older copies of this work and some of her other books can still be found, and some are considered to be collector's items.
In 1930 Coblentz received a B.A. degree from George Washington University. In honor of her later work, she was presented with a Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award by her alma mater in 1945.
In the mid-to-late 1940s, Coblentz was instrumental in raising money to buy the land on which the Cleveland Park Neighborhood Library was built on Connecticut Avenue in Washington, D.C. A set of windows, with illustrations based on her books, remain on display in the library.
Catherine Cate Coblentz, her husband, and an infant daughter are buried in Rock Creek Cemetery in Washington, D.C. (Section O). [mehr]

Vathek is a Gothic novel written by William Beckford. Vathek capitalized on the 18th (and early 19th) century obsession with all things Oriental, which was inspired by Antoine Galland's translation of The Arabian Nights. Beckford was also influenced by similar works from the French writer Voltaire. His originality lay in combining the popular Oriental elements with the Gothic stylings of Horace Walpole's The Castle of Otranto. The result stands alongside Walpole's novel and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein in the first rank of early Gothic fiction.
The novel chronicles the fall from power of the Caliph Vathek (a fictionalised version of the historical Al-Wathiq), who renounces Islam and engages with his mother, Carathis, in a series of licentious and deplorable activities designed to gain him supernatural powers. At the end of the novel, instead of attaining these powers, Vathek descends into a hell ruled by the demon Eblis where he is doomed to wander endlessly and speechlessly.
Vathek, the ninth Caliph of the Abassides, ascended to the throne at an early age. He is a majestic figure, terrible in anger (one glance of his flashing eye can make “the wretch on whom it was fixed instantly fall backwards and sometimes expire”), and addicted to the pleasures of the flesh. He is intensely thirsty for knowledge and often invites scholars to converse with him. If he fails to convince the scholar of his points of view, he attempts a bribe; if this does not work, he sends the scholar to prison. To better study astronomy, he builds an observation tower with 11,000 steps. [mehr]

The Little Blue Princess is a story of a “test pilot of an instant time flying machine” that accidentally flies to planet Saturn. A small introduction talks about the author’s childhood, his parents’ By mistake he moves the “flying spot stick” to planet Saturn. In an instant he lands on a Saturn moon called Rhea. The pilot knows that the next favorable angle to return to Earth would occur after 145 days (Earth time). During those 145 days he’d have to survive as best as he can on Rhea moon. When he exits the time flying machine he is received on the ground by a little “blue princess” named Rhea Lu. The princess introduces the pilot to her royal family and gets permission from her parents to accompany the pilot in his endeavors and to help him know what Rhea moon is about. With each chapter that follows we get details about moon’s landscape, animals and flora, and life. The story is narrated by the pilot at the first person. Though, with each chapter the princess presents - like a true tourist guide - the most important aspects of life on Rhea moon. It also introduces the reader to facts about astronomy, botanic and zoology based on her own ideas about nature and life. Details about people living on the moon surface at every step like: the moon is covered by a huge bubble built long time ago. The bubble keeps the temperature on the moon at an acceptable level for life. The next day on his life on the moon the pilot gets a breakfast invitation and is initiated into the moon cuisine which – to the pilot’s disappointment – consists exclusively of crude, sun dried or boiled vegetables. Also he is taken aback by the metallic aspect and taste of the salad leaves. He discovers also that Rhea moon is inhabited by fantastic birds and animals stepping on each other in their rush to grab food. Princess Rhea Lu asked the pilot about “how the music sounds on Earth”. The pilot accompanies her to the time flying machine and plays for her a DVD. “Listening to Mozart’s music Princess Rhea Lu began unexpectedly to cry”. At this moment the story introduces a highly sensitive deviation of the plot towards it final conclusion. “I wish I could compose such music. Mozart is a genius” she said. The princess plants the first seed of her desire to travel to Earth with the pilot and learn to compose Mozartian music. Everything is set for the pilot and the princess to instantly fly to Earth. The reception of both of them on Earth is overwhelming, on the launching pad as well as the conservatory of music. [mehr]

Alice Duer was born in New York City on July 28, 1874 into a wealthy family.[1] She was the daughter of James Gore King Duer[1][2][3][4] and Elizabeth Wilson Meads. Elizabeth was the daughter of Orlando Meads of Albany, New York. Her great grandfather was William Alexander Duer, who was the president of Columbia College, 1829–1842. Her great great grandfather, was William Duer,[1][5] an American lawyer, developer, and speculator from New York City. He had served in the Continental Congress and the convention that framed the New York Constitution. In 1778, he signed the United States Articles of Confederation. Her great great great grandfather was William Alexander, who claimed the disputed title of Earl of Stirling, and was an American Major-General during the American Revolutionary War.
She was also a descendant of Senator Rufus King, who was an American lawyer, politician, and diplomat. He was a delegate for Massachusetts to the Continental Congress. He also attended the Constitutional Convention and was one of the signers of the United States Constitution on September 17, 1787, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He represented New York in the United States Senate, served as Minister to Britain, and was the Federalist candidate for both Vice President (1804, 1808) and President of the United States (1816)
At the time of her entrance into society, her family lost most of its fortune. She entered Barnard College[2][3][4] in 1895 studying mathematics and astronomy. She helped to pay for her studies by selling novels and short essays. She and her sister Caroline King Duer published a joint book of poems.[2][3][4] Alice graduated in June 1899.
On October 5, 1899, she married Henry Wise Miller[2][3][4] at Grace Church[6] Chapel in New York City.[7] He was born in 1877, the son of Lt. Commander Jacob Miller, in Nice, France, where his father was serving with the U.S. Navy. He was an 1892 graduate of Harvard University. They left for Costa Rica, where he attempted to develop rubber cultivation. This venture eventually failed; in 1903, she, her husband and young son returned to New York, where they lived in difficulty for some time, he working in the Stock Exchange, she teaching, which she hated. After a time, her husband earned more and she was able to dedicate her working time entirely to writing. [mehr]
