None of it might ever have happened, if Richard Kendrick had gone into
the house of Mr. Robert Gray, on that first night, by the front door.
For, if he had made his first entrance by that front door, if he had
been admitted by the maidservant in proper fashion and conducted into
Judge Calvin Gray's presence in the library, if he had delivered his
message, from old Matthew Kendrick, his grandfather, and had come away
again, ushered out of that same front door, the chances are that he
never would have gone again. In which case there would have been no
story to tell.
It all came about--or so it seems--from its being a very rainy night in
late October, and from young Kendrick's wearing an all-concealing
motoring rain-coat and cap. He had been for a long drive into the
country, and had just returned, mud-splashed, when his grandfather,
having taken it into his head that a message must be delivered at once,
requested his grandson to act as his messenger.
So the young man had impatiently bolted out with the message, had sent
his car rushing through the city streets, and had become a still muddier
and wetter figure than before when he stood upon the porch of the old
Gray homestead, well out in the edge of the city, and put thumb to the
bell.
His hand was stayed by the shrill call of a small boy who dashed up on
the porch out of the dusk. "You can't get in that way," young Ted Gray
cried. "Something's happened to the lock--they've sent for a man to fix
it. Come round to the back with me--I'll show you."
So this was why Richard Kendrick came to be conducted by way of the
tall-pillared rear porch into the house through the rear door of the
wide, central hall. There was no light at this end of the hall, and the
old-fashioned, high-backed settee which stood there was in shadow.
With a glance at the caller's muddy condition the young son of the house
decided it the part of prudence to assign him this waiting-place, while
he himself should go in search of his uncle. The lad had seen the big
motor-car at the gate; quite naturally he took its driver for a
chauffeur.
Ted looked in at the library door; his uncle was not there. He raced off
upstairs, not noting the change which had already taken place in the
visitor's appearance with the removal of the muddy coat and cap.
Richard Kendrick now looked a particularly personable young man, well
built, well dressed, of the brown-haired, gray-eyed, clear-skinned type.
The eyes were very fine; the nose and mouth had the lines of
distinction; the chin was--positive. Altogether the young man did not
look the part he had that day been playing--that of the rich young idler
who drives a hundred and fifty miles in a powerful car, over the worst
kind of roads, merely for the sake of diversion and a good luncheon.
While he waited Richard considered the hall, at one end of which he sat
in the shadow. There was something very homelike about this hall. The

Francis Marion Crawford (August 2, 1854 – April 9, 1909) was an American writer noted for his many novels, especially those set in Italy, and for his classic weird and fantastic stories.

He was born at Bagni di Lucca, Italy, the only son of the American sculptor Thomas Crawford and Louisa Cutler Ward, the brother of writer Mary Crawford Fraser (aka Mrs. Hugh Fraser), and the nephew of Julia Ward Howe, the American poet. He studied successively at St Paul's School, Concord, New Hampshire; Cambridge University; University of Heidelberg; and the University of Rome.
In 1879 he went to India, where he studied Sanskrit and edited in Allahabad The Indian Herald. Returning to America in February 1881, he continued to study Sanskrit at Harvard University for a year and for two years contributed to various periodicals, mainly The Critic. Early in 1882 he established his lifelong close friendship with Isabella Stewart Gardner.
During this period he lived most of the time in Boston at his Aunt Julia Ward Howe's house and in the company of his Uncle, Sam Ward. His family was concerned about his employment prospects. They suggested that he become a professional singer; he had a baritone voice and had entertained friends with recitals of songs by Franz Schubert. In January 1882, his family asked George Henschel, who was then conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, to assess whether Crawford was capable of a professional singing career. Henschel told Crawford and his family that he would "never be able to sing in perfect tune. Crawford was distraught by the news; after a long silence, his uncle Sam then asked him, "Why don't you write down that little story you told me some time ago of that strange experience you had in India — don't you know?"[1]
In December 1882 he produced his first novel, Mr Isaacs, a sketch of modern Anglo-Indian life mingled with a touch of Oriental mystery. This book had an immediate success, and its author's promise was confirmed by the publication of Dr Claudius (1883). In May 1883 he returned to Italy, where he made his permanent home. His residence at the historic Hotel Cocumella in Sorrento during 1885 moved him to settle permanently in Sant' Agnello, where in the Fall he bought the Villa Renzi that became Villa Crawford. Over one half of his novels are set in Italy. He wrote three long historical studies of Italy and was well advanced with a history of Rome in the Middle Ages when he died. This accounts perhaps for the fact that, despite his nationality, Marion Crawford's books stand apart from any distinctively American current in literature.
In October 1884 he married Elizabeth Berdan, the daughter of the American Civil War Union Gen. Hiram Berdan. They had two sons and two daughters.

Jeanne Louise Henriette Campan (née Genet; 6 October[1] 1752, Paris – 16 March 1822, Mantes) was a French educator, writer and lady-in-waiting. In the service of Marie Antoinette before and during the French Revolution, she was afterwards headmistress of the first "Maison d'éducation de la Légion d'honneur", as appointed by Napoleon in 1807.
Her father was the highest-ranking clerk in the foreign office (the ambassador Citizen Genet was her younger brother), and, although without fortune, placed her in the most cultivated society. By the age of fifteen she could speak English and Italian, and had gained so high a reputation for her academic accomplishments as to be appointed reader to Louis XV's daughters (Princesses Victoire, Sophie and Louise) in 1768, and lady-in-waiting to Marie Antoinette in 1770. She was a general favourite at court, and when in 1774 she bestowed her hand upon Monsieur Campan, son of the secretary of the royal cabinet, the king gave her an annuity of 5,000 livres as dowry. The marriage was unhappy and the couple separated in 1790. Madame Campan was made First Lady of the Bedchamber by Marie Antoinette in 1786; and she continued to attend on her until the storming of the Tuileries on 10 August 1792, in which she was forcibly separated from the queen. With her own house under attack on this occasion, Henriette sought asylum in the countryside.
She survived the dangers of the Terror, but after the 9th of Thermidor, finding herself almost penniless, and being thrown on her own resources by the illness of her spouse, Madame Campan determined to support herself by establishing a school at St Germain. The institution prospered, and was patronized by Hortense de Beauharnais, whose influence led to the appointment of Madame Campan as superintendent of the academy founded by Napoleon at Écouen for the education of the daughters and sisters of members of his Légion d'honneur in 1807. She held this post until it was abolished at the restoration of the Bourbons in 1814, when she retired to Mantes, where she spent the rest of her life amid the kind attentions of affectionate friends, but saddened by the loss of her only son, and by the calumnies circulated on account of her connexion with the Bonapartes.
Henriette Campan died in 1822, leaving valuable Memoirs of the Private Life of Marie Antoinette (published 1823 (posthumously), Paris, 3 vols.), subtitled To which are Added Personal Recollections Illustrative of the Reigns of Louis XIV, Louis XV, and Louis XVI (French: Mémoires sur la vie privée de Marie Antoinette, suivis de souvenirs et anecdotes historiques sur les règnes de Louis XIV – XV); a treatise De l'Education des Femmes (pub. 1824); and one or two small didactic works, written in a clear and natural style. The most noteworthy thing in her educational system, and that which especially recommended it to Napoleon, was the place given to domestic economy in the education of girls. PREFACE.
One fine August bank-holiday many thoughts, more or less connected with
the day, prompted me to write this essay, so forcibly did it appear
that people required help to make their lives easier and happier.
Since then there have been several bank-holidays; and though trade is
depressed throughout the country, though financial panic has ruined
thousands, yet the demand for beer, spirits, and tobacco is as great as
ever; the hollow gaieties of life are as noisy as ever--perhaps the
more so for being more hollow; still our most precious friends kill
themselves with overwork--mental pulverization. If they eased their
minds by employing their hands they might yet live, even though many
could not, last autumn, afford to buy the breath of sea or mountain air
which would have strengthened them for the burdens of the new year.
Those who were wise and who had capital invested it in health, that
being likely to bring them in the best return.
We have had seven years of the highest national prosperity. Although
fictitious, it gave us pleasure while it lasted, and we were able to
enjoy all that life has to offer in its perfection. We may be going to
pass through seven years of dearth, so we must husband our resources of
health and wealth, instead of drawing upon them in the reckless way we
have lately accustomed ourselves to do. Some years of scarcity may be a
blessing to us all, if they lead us back from the habits of excess and
idleness we have fallen into, and particularly the craving for
excitement, whether in the form of literature, or by means of
stimulants and cordials (absinthe).
A plain but short statement of our national losses will show the
necessity of economizing the goods we still possess, financial as well
as physical.
Independent of the stagnation of trade which paralyzes every branch of
our commerce, we have lately had losses through foreign loans more
severe than any we have experienced during the present century.
Since the announcement by Turkey in October, 1875, that the interest on
the Turkish debt would be reduced, there has been a great fall in
foreign stocks. The debt of Turkey--roughly speaking, £200,000,000--has
fallen, say, £125,000,000 in value. Egyptian securities, not including
the floating debt, approximately estimated at £60,000,000, have fallen
some £20,000,000 in value. In smaller stocks the fall has probably been
some £20,000,000; and since the breaking out of the Eastern Question,
Russian stocks, at an aggregate of about £165,000,000, have fallen 12
per cent., or a sum equal to more than £20,000,000 sterling.
Besides these calamities there have been in England, as shown by a
recent return, 1,797 commercial failures, representing liabilities of
£30,000,000 sterling, and it has been calculated that of the firms and
persons occupied in business, 3 per cent. have been unable to meet
their engagements.

The lecture
Kameela, the Superpictus female mosquito, stood on an oak coffee table where most of the light coming from the neon side lamp was focused, the light was strong and sharp, it was a kind of light Kameela fancied. Mumbo, a Bifurcatus Male Mosquito, stood beside her looking at the black and white spots on the front edge of her wings, then back at her eyes which were open wide. Kameela then looked up at Mumbo who was more than five times her size. "You know, I really don't understand why most humans consider us to be evil" Said Kameela.
-"If only they knew how sophisticated we are, they would probably change their minds" Answered Mumbo.
The electro-magnetic waves coming from Flinty, a Sergenti female mosquitoe who's about the size of Kameela, reached the antennas of Kameela and Mumbo, "Look at me guys, look over here" She shouted. Kameela and Mumbo looked at her from a distance to see her standing on the shoulder of a man, sucking out his blood, and by the look on her face that was gradually turning red, one could tell that she was enjoying every millisecond of it, and that she saw no aggression in the act she was engaged in. The man was lying on his single bed, reading a romance novel, totally unaware of Flinty’s presence. He had no shirt on for it was one of the hottest days of October 1996. Kameela and Mumbo signaled to Flinty to come and join them. Flinty took her time for she knew that the man was totally engaged in reading, and had no idea what was going on, and besides, Flinty perfected the act of sucking blood to a point where she did it with full confidence, and she was skilled to a degree that she could sense if a man noticed her or not by his perspiration rhythm, which she could feel by her antennas. When she finished her act, she flew proudly and joined the couple who were standing there in the light. Kameela shook Flinty’s hand and said “I’d like you to meet Mumbo, my friend.”
-“Nice to meet you Mumbo” Said Flinty, and shook his hand in caution, for he was a huge mosquito. “Where are you from?” continued Flinty.
-“I’m from down town Haifa, the slums of down town” replied Mumbo.
-“You’re a local too, like Kameela, how nice”.
-“I’m a Bifurcatus, so watch out” He said.
-“Oh, I had a very close Bifurcatus friend back in Jerusalem when I was younger” Said Flinty, and because most mosquitoes were racist against Bifurcatus mosquitoes, mostly because they are extremely clumsy, Mumbo figured that by mentioning that she had a close Bifurcatus friend, in a way, she was hinting that she’s not a racist character. Mumbo was very sensitive to that issue.
Mumbo smiling “So what do you do?”
-“I am a student of economics”
Mumbo stepped away and said “Oh, you’re into business”
-“What do you do then big guy” said Flinty.
-“I stand and talk” said Mumbo.
-“He’s a stand up comedian” followed Kameela.

JULY: As a family await the birthday boy, Nathan, who is late for his own secret party that he knows about, the Johnson family chat, mock, joke and tease each other.
AUGUST: in the heat of august a dog chases his enemy a wily feline, until they meet an ugly Alsatian.
SEPTEMBER: The work in a factory is too much for one young employee. Duke spends time alone in his bedsit.
OCTOBER: the student had finished reading aloud his writing, and the class must critique his work. What will say? Will they like it, will they be harsh? He is extremely worried. Some colourful characters voice their views, but will anyone favour his work?
NOVEMBER: an arrogant actor hates his fellow thespian. The director spoils him, and lets him take days off, while the other actors play silly thespian exercises. Why does Harrold hate him so?
DECEMBER: the year reaches its thrilling climax as Josh Hartson tells us about his year and the month of December. Many characters we have met in this strange year will be there in this most frightful story of all; a mad scientist transforming humans into ever living creatures. It has been three months since she died. 91 days, 2,184 hours I have not been taking it well. I refuse to get out of my room. Uncle Max tries to come in but I don’t let anybody in. I hear voices from down the hall. Uncle Max is talking to someone .
“ She won’t let anyone in,” Says Max.
“ Not even the boyfriend?” asked someone else.
“ Yeah,”
Someone very unfamiliar walks into the room. I throw my pillow at the person.
“ Go away,”
“ Makaila I am doctor Johnson,” He says.
“ What do you want,”
“ I want to help you get over her,”
Her. He was talking about Karla. Karla, Karla. All of a sudden the ground rushes to me, and the darkness rushes over me.
I wake up to an unfamiliar room. Has white walls,blue curtains. Something is hooked onto my hand and I hear beeping. I see Jason and Max standing in the corner. Jason walks over sensing I am awake.
“ Max can you please give us a minute,” Jason asked. Uncle Max just sighed and left the room.
“ Makaila, do you know how worried we were?” I didn’t answer. “ Hey listen to me. I will find who killed her”
“ Who?” I asked. “ Who killed my sister?”
“ Makaila calm down. Let me explain. So I was looking at the body,”
“ Wait,” I said. “ You were looking at the body. Did you open the casket,”
“ If that’s what you want to call it. Anyways I was looking at the body and I found what the police called ‘scratch marks ‘ were actually vampire teeth marks,”
My body froze. I couldn’t get the words right in my brain.
“ What?” I was very surprised.
“ Nobody in my family knows who killed her but it must be someone that has contact to your family,”
“ I don't know anybody who would do such a thing. I mean she was only seven. “Sometimes I wish I was the one that died and not my parents nor Karla,”
Jason held my face with both hands, “ Snap out of it Makaila. I would kill myself if something happened to you,”
“ Why would you kill yourself?”
“ Because I love you,” Suddenly he held my face with both hands and kissed me with joy I have never felt before..
I am going home today. Uncle Max is making me go to school tomorrow. I am still trying to get over Karla but, that can never happen. When we got home it was nighttime so I just went into my bathroom to get ready for bed and that is when I saw her. She looked perfect. Not like the last time I saw her. Her clothes were not spattered with blood. Her hair was not out of place. Her face was perfect.
Karla.
I screamed at the top of my lungs. My head was starting to hurt. It hurt more than a migraine. Like I was being stabbed in the stomach. The migraine stopped abruptly and she was gone. Max was by my side rocking me back and forth. I don't know how long we sat there . I must have fell asleep because when my alarm sounded I was in bed. I checked the time and it was seven. I quickly got ready for school. I did not even bother to straighten my hair. I left it in its curly self and got into the toyota. When I got to school there was a girl I have never seen before in my seat.
“ Excuse me. Hi,” I said. “ My name is Makaila,”
“ My name Isabella,” She said with a thick puerto rican accent.
“ Ok. We sort of have assigned seats and you would be seating in mine,”
“ Oh. I so sorry,” She said seating in the seat next to me . The bell indicating class has started rang.
“ Class today we are going to learn about integrals,” Everyone groaned.
The bell rang after 45 minutes of boring integrals. As I stood up I felt a tap on my shoulder.
“ Hi. Will you help me find my next class.” Isabella said as she handed me her schedule. I saw we had the same schedule.
“ What instrument do you play?” I asked noticing she also had orchestra.
“ Cello,” She said.
“ Cool I play the violin,”
We started walking down the hall. I felt arms around my waist.
“Hey,” I said turning to see Jason. “ Jason this is Isabella she is new,”
“ Hola,” Jason said to Isabella in fluent spanish.
“ Hola,” She said back. “ Como Estas? “
“ Bien. Y tu?” Jason said.
“ Bien,”
I just stood there like what the heck are they saying.
“ So Isabella how do you like the school so far?” I asked.
“ It is good. It is so big. Schools in puerto rico are not this big,”
The one minute bell rang. Jason gave me a quick peck on the lips and went the other way.
At the end of the day I grabbed my keys from my bag and started walking towards my car. As I was walking to my car there was the migraine again. I screamed and grabbed my hair. I dropped to my knees. I saw her at the window of my car. This time she was not alone . My parents were sitting next to her. I closed my eyes and reopened them. They were gone . Jason was next to me . Followed by Isabella, followed by the nurse. Jason helped me get up. Suddenly I noticed everyone was staring.
“ Are you okay?” The nurse asked, “ What happened?”
I took a deep breath. “ I don't know what happened. One minute I was walking to my car, the next I have this huge migraine,”
The nurse indicated for me to follow her. “ Follow me,”
She led me into her office . She indicated for me to sit down. I watched as she was typing something into her computer. She checked my blood pressure and my temperature . My bp was normal but, my temp was a little over 101.
“ Looks like you have a fever,” She said. “ I am gonna have to call your uncle to come pick you up,”
“ No. Thats okay. I can drive her,” Jason chimed in.
“ What about my car,”
“ Isabella will drive it,” I even forgot Isabella was in here .
“ Yes. I will drive your car,” Isabella said.
“ Okay It's settled then,” The nurse said picking up my printouts with medications to get.
When we got outside I asked Isabella for my car keys.
“ The nurse said Jason should drive you home,” she said.
“ Well In my car,” She handed over the keys. I handed it to Jason. We waved bye to Isabella and promised that she would pick me up up in the morning.
Jason and I got into the car. He started driving but he stopped at Mcdonalds. He pecked me on the lips and got out of the car and went around to open my door. So gentlemanly. We sat across from each other at a booth.
“ What are we doing here,” I asked as we settled in.
“ I know what happened was not because of a fever,”
“ Okay. This is not the first time it happened,”
“ What do you mean?”
“ I was in the bathroom. The day I got back from the hospital. I had saw her in the mirror. I had this migraine, like the one I just got. I saw her in the car window this time,”
“ Wow. I don't know what to say. What do you think it means?”
“ I don't know. I have never experience this. But get this, I saw my parents with her this time,” I said. I felt hot tears coming down. Jason got up and put his arms around me .
“ Hey. Its okay. Come on. I want to show you a place,” We went into my car and drove for what seems like an hour into a big high meadow. The snow was covering up a lot of the meadow. We got out of the car.
“ This place is beautiful,” I said breaking the silence . “You could see the whole city here . Places like the town center and the museum of art. I have always wanted to go to an art museum. Learn visual arts,”
“ We could go to the art museum. I can teach you how to draw and sketch thing,”
“ We can. I could teach you violin if you want. You know what's weird?”

“ You don't ask a lady her age but, I just turned 18 so I am technically a legal adult. How old are you? In both vampire and human years,”
“ I am 22 in human years. I am 130 in vampire,”
“ Why are you in highschool?” I asked.
“ Because my parents wanted me to get a degree in college so I have to pass high school first,”
“ Oh. You know we have to start applying for college soon. “
“ I figured. What school were you thinking of? I was thinking SUU. Southern Utah University,”
“ Oh really? What does that have?” I asked.
“ It has theatre, dance, performing arts, and spanish,’’
He shrugged
