But Hazel earns the women's enmity by being attractive to their men, and her family members get themselves into situations where she must rescue them.
Hazel is too sweet to be real and too wussy to earn my sympathy - she should have told her phony mother and whiny brother off at the beginning of the book. And the way Fenn ladles one trouble after another onto her plate reminded me of an old melodrama. In spite of these flaws, it kept me reading, but the completely unsatisfactory ending knocked another star off my rating [mehr]

Edward Dutton Cook (30 January 1829 – 11 September 1883) was an English dramatic critic and author.
Cook's father was George Simon Cook of Grantham, Lincolnshire, a solicitor, of the firm of Le Blanc & Cook, 18 New Bridge Street, Blackfriars, London, who died on 12 September 1852, leaving a family of nine children.
Edward Dutton, the second son, was born at 9 Grenville Street, Brunswick Square, London, on 30 January 1829. At the age of six he went to a school kept by a Miss Boswell at Haverstock Hill, was removed to another school at Bradmore House, Chiswick, and finally, about 1843, entered King's College School. Having completed his education, he was articled to his father, and remained in his office about four years, when he obtained a situation in the Madras Railway Company's office in New Broad Street, city of London, and in his spare time followed his artistic and literary tastes.[1]
As soon as he was able to do so he left the railway company and devoted himself entirely to literature as a profession. Having studied painting under Rolt, and learned engraving, he at one time sought employment on Punch as a draughtsman on wood. In 1859 he became a member of the Artists' Rifles, and also a member of the Ramblers' Club, which met every night from November to May at Dick's Tavern, 8 Fleet Street. About this period, in conjunction with Mr. Leopold Lewis, he wrote a melodrama entitled The Dove and the Serpent, which was produced with much success, under Mr. Nelson Lee's management, at the City of London Theatre.[2] [mehr]

Saracinesca is a novel by F. Marion Crawford, first published as a serial in Blackwood's Magazine and then as a book in New York (Macmillan) and Edinburgh (Blackwood) in 1887. Set chiefly in Rome of twenty years earlier, the novel paints a rich picture of the period, detailing the spiritual and economic problems of the aristocracy at a time when its influence and status were under attack from the emerging forces of modernity. This romance tells the tale of Giovanni Saracinesca and his courting of Corona d'Astradente, complete with intrigue and sword fights (Crawford was an expert fencer). It can be categorized as a work of historical fiction in that it relates a time when the author was only a child, and also in the sense that the particulars of that time and place are carefully delineated. In a sense, Crawford had been researching for this book all his life: his parents had witnessed the brief 1848 revolution, and his cousin, in her memoirs of Crawford, insisted that "[t]here is little doubt that Crawford as a boy had heard first-hand descriptions of [the] exciting events" of the 1860s.
Saracinesca proved to be both an immediate hit and Crawford's greatest critical success. It was also a commercial triumph: he negotiated separate contracts for the serial printing and the simultaneous American and British publication, as well as future royalties. He followed it with two brilliant sequels, Sant' Ilario and Don Orsino, the three of which are usually considered a trilogy. Subsequent sequels, such as Corleone, continue the saga of Saracinesca family, but with a diversion from the previous focus on the drama and status of family members into heavily plotted, incident-heavy melodrama. Characters from Saracinesca and its sequels also appear in A Lady of Rome (1906) and The White Sister (1909). [mehr]

The Definite Object is the second Jeffery Farnol book I’ve read. It’s also the second Jeffery Farnol book I’ve picked hoping to find out that it was an early regency romance in the vein of Georgette Heyer, as I’ve read that they co-created the genre. I guess I missed the subtitle. But I find myself wondering whether the regencies are any different. Do they also all feature disaffected millionaires going incognito in order to hang out with poor people? Perhaps someday I will find out.
The disaffected millionaire in The Definite Object is Geoffrey Ravenslee, who likes to race cars and box with his chauffeur and (apparently) be cheated by his servants. He realizes that he’s not doing anything with his life, so when he finds young Spike Chesterton attempting to burgle his home, he follows Spike home to Hell’s Kitchen, hoping to find someone to fall in love with. He finds Hermione Chesterton, Spike’s sister, who is of course exceptionally beautiful, as well as virtuous and hardworking.
Spike is mixed up with a bad crowd, the worst member of which, Bud McGinnis, wants to marry Hermione. Bud has already driven one girl to suicide, and spends a lot of time trying to get Spike drunk. Geoffrey beats him up. It all feels like Farnol has raised the level of melodrama much higher than the story requires. There was one thread of the plot that I really liked, though: Soapy, one of Bud’s henchmen, is actively trying to bring about Bud’s downfall (he was in love with Maggie Finlay, the aforementioned suicide), and he’s the only character who seems to be aware of how events are playing out — everyone else is pretty self-involved. He’s not quite a bad guy, since he’s working against Bud, but he’s definitely not a good guy, either, and while I don’t know if I want to call Soapy himself sinister, the scenes in which he plots his revenge definitely are. It’s like the whole storyline was borrowed from a different book– a detective novel from the 1880s, probably — it wouldn’t be out of place in something like The Diamond Coterie. [mehr]

Danelle’s story revolves around two teenage characters, Danelle and Marc. Marc just moved with his family from a Chicago suburb to this small “fishermen-own” town in Florida. The cluster of houses that Marc’s house is part of is called Ublock. This is the place where most of the action takes place. At first, Marc is unhappy about the prospect to live his life in this boring rural town. This feeling persists until he meets a beautiful girl named Danelle. Marc tries to approach the girl but she rejects his city boy “manners” or lack thereof. Things change to the better after the school starts. Danelle and Marc become very good friends. Their friendship and love that follows is agreed upon and even encouraged by their moms. Danelle appears to be an open and lovely character; she is very active and in love with her life and achievements. Marc is a little bit snooty, a city boy that looks at everything as being not worth worrying about. They like each other the way they are. Sadly, at the apex of their love, Danelle is diagnosed with leukemia. Danelle is depressed and terrified. Marc assures Danelle that he was going to be with her and help her pass through the difficult time of healing. Eventually, Danelle undergoes a successful bone marrow transplant. Her health seems to improve steadily on her way to full recovery. Short time though after showing sign of overall success, her recovery hits a snag. Danelle is aware of it: her strength and her weight loss make her think that there must be another serious cause to it. Doctor’s diagnostic is frightening; Danelle’s excessive use of medication to speed up her recovery damaged her kidneys. She need an urgent kidney transplant. Before leaving for a hospital in Boston to have her kidney transplant Danelle persuades her mom to let Marc have a sleep over. That night Danelle and Marc have sex. Danelle passes successfully the kidney implant surgery. During her convalescing period Danelle falls in love with the son of the surgeon. Marc founds all about Danelle’s betrayal when Danelle’s mom comes back unexpectedly and sells her house. Marc is profoundly distraught by Danelle’s betrayal and is “creeping his days” in profound disillusionment and lack of desire to live. Two days after the year graduation Marc receives a phone call from Danelle. She tells Marc that she is at the airport, and that she loves him and that she would be seen him in a couple of hours. Marc tells his mom that Danelle is coming back and that he is in love with her. Marc’s mom doesn’t understand what is happening. She is doubtful about Danelle’s sincerity and tries to persuade Marc not to take her back. When Danelle appears the romance story seems to become a hopeless melodrama. “People say that love gets stronger after passing through the fire of betrayal… That still has to be put to test…” Eventually, Marc’s mom desire to compromise and her compassion helped the two lovers, Danelle and Marc, get back to where they left off: being happy… [mehr]
