William Griffith (1810–1845) was a British doctor, naturalist, and botanist. Griffith's botanical publications are from India and Burma. After a brief stay in Madras, he was assigned as a Civil Surgeon to Tenasserim, Burma, where he studied local plants and made collecting trips to the Barak River valley in Assam. He explored various parts of Burma, traveling the rivers, including the Irrawadi as far as Rangoon. He visited the highlands of Sikkim, and the region of the Himalayas around Shimla. Subsequently, Griffith was appointed as Civil Surgeon in Malacca, where he died of a parasitic liver disease. [mehr]

Bithia Mary Croker (née Sheppard, 1849–1920) was a prolific Anglo-Indian novelist. Very little is known about her life. She was the only daughter of Rev. William Sheppard, Rector of Kilgefin Church in County Roscommon, Ireland. She married Lieutenant Colonel John Stokes Croker (1844-1911 CE), an officer in the Royal Munster Fusiliers in 1871. Soon after their marriage she followed her husband to Madras where he worked, then went to Bengal. She lived in India for fourteen years, and spent some time in a hill station in Wellington. [mehr]

Edward Dutton, the second son, was born at 9 Grenville Street, Brunswick Square, London, on 30 January 1829. At the age of six he went to a school kept by a Miss Boswell at Haverstock Hill, was removed to another school at Bradmore House, Chiswick, and finally, about 1843, entered King's College School. Having completed his education, he was articled to his father, and remained in his office about four years, when he obtained a situation in the Madras Railway Company's office in New Broad Street, city of London, and in his spare time followed his artistic and literary tastes.
