-Five years earlier-

"Anything?"
A black-haired boy looks suspiciously at the man sitting in front of him. His hair has already begun to fall in one unusually bright blue-green eye dispite his attempts at pushing it back. His clothes, a hoodie and a pair of jeans, hang loosely on his skinny body. There is no doubt that you could probably count his ribs if you looked under his shirt. Any first glance may tell you he looked like a young deliquent: scruffy black hair, the dark clothes, the dirt caked under his fingernails and smeared on his face. If you bother to look closer, his thin body and the desperate light in his eyes may tell you that he's been living homeless for awhile. And he isn't getting by very well.
The man sitting in the chair across from him in this otherwise empty plain white expance of space looked the exact opposite: older, tall, clean-cut. His blonde hair was combed back and gelled away from his face, his dark eyes warm in a friendly face. The smile on his lips is open, welcoming.
"Anything," He tells the boy, his hands folded neatly in his lap while the boy's knot in his jeans. "Anything at all."
The boy bites his lip uncertainly and looks at his feet. His shoulders hunch, and his next words seem almost angry. "And all I have to do is...kill nightmares, or whatever? How do I know you're not just a dream?"
The man sighs. "Haven't I already proved this to you before?"
"Maybe I just don't believe you."
Another moment passes in complete silence. The boy fidgets, and the longer it lasts the more disappointed the man seems.
Finally, "Listen, if you think you can survive without making this contract, I can go-"
"NO!" The boy's head snaps back up. "I can't-" He swallows, his voice quieting again. "I need this. I'm just nervous, I'm sorry."

~Julia did not recognize the setting of this dream.
She was alone among a large crowd of people, the bodies pressing her from all sides urging her forward along the sidewalk. People spilled out onto the streets, but there seemed to be no danger of getting hit by a car, so she didn't worry about it.
Everyone was brightly dressed in yellows and blues and crimsons that flashed in her eyes, and most had hair to match: a woman on her right sported a vivid flaming red-gold-orange combination that made her hair flame. The man in front of her, Julia thought, was far too fond of lepord spots. She felt odd in the crowd, dressed as she was in her usual hoodie and jeans with her dark hair brushing her shoulders.
Buildings in all sorts of sizes lined the streets, all of them made of a silvery metal that glittered like glass in the sunlight. Images appeared on some spots of them, advertising one product or another or showing snippets of shows like Julia would see on her TV in the real world. In the corner of her eye, Julia thought she saw a tear-stained woman with violet hair gently place her hand on one of the images. The image- a woman identical to her except for the milky white of her hair -copied the movement, touching her hand to the surface.
It was something that should have been impossible, but as a young girl with slit-pupils like a cats' looked over her shoulder at her and smirked, Julia was reminded that few things were impossible in these dreams.
"Julie!" A male voice cried then, throwing his arms around her shoulders from her right side. "I've been looking for you eeevvvvvvveeeeerrrrrryyyyywhhhhheeeeerrrrrreeee!!"
Startled, it took her a moment to recognize who he was. But not before she'd turned and punched him in the face.
"Ow." The boy with pumpkin-orange curls who was often her companion in these impossible dreams jumped away and clutched his nose, pulling a face at her. "What was that for?"
Julia rolled her eyes and continued walking, leaving him to follow her if they wanted to continue talking. "You should know by now not to sneak up on me, Hazael."
"I'll remember that." He shoved several people to fall in step next to her, looking down from the good five inches higher his head was from her. Colors exploded like pixilated fireworks in the blues of his eyes, and Julia silently praised her imagination for creating him. She didn't know how it had come up with Hazael, but she wasn't asking questions.~

Ugh dang writers block. I have no will to write! Why??
I stumbled across this story of mine the other day. Its called Beast of Blood. Seems I wrote the prologue way back when. This is it.

Even with the casket lid shut tightly over his remains I could see him. I could see Kelvin as clearly as if he were standing right in front of me, still so full of life like he should have been. I blinked, one hand touching the smooth wooden coffin. That peaceful image of Kelvin melted, slowly being replaced by my last memory of him. Those beautiful golden eyes faded away first, shriveling like raisin in his skull.
I had to look away, had to take my hand off his coffin, before I was over whelmed by my own imagination. I took a shaky breath, forcing my mind to go blank before the actual memory of his death rose to the front of my brain. I turned away, taking a few steps away from the casket so other people had room to grieve. From out of the corner of my eye I saw Nellie peel away from Kelvin's sobbing sister and mother. The muscles in my face tightened, forcing that silent sorrow filled mask back into place.
When the hem of her black skirt came into view I raised my eyes to met hers. Tears glistened in her eyes, the same blank sorrowful mask I wore breaking when she saw the struggle in mine. Only for a moment she let me see what she truly felt. She let me see just how badly seeing Kelvin's mother fling herself over her sons coffin, screaming that it wasn't fair someone like him to be murdered, had affected her. I flinched away from the raw emotions filling her eyes.
Then, just as if I had imagined the whole thing, she blinked and the mask was back in place. Only the slight shine in her eyes let me know how close to losing it she had been. Her arm lifted, hand stretching out to touch me. I stepped out of her reach, shaking my head to warn her not to try and comfort me. She knew how hard it was for me to be here.
I avoided funerals for a reason, but this one, I had to go. For Kelvin's sake I had to go. And if I lost it now, in front of his family, these past few days of hard won control will have been for nothing. When I looked back Scott was standing next to her, glancing between the two of us like he wasn't sure what to do. I had to do a double take to be sure it was timid little Scott.
I hadn't even heard him approach, or sensed him reenter the room. Either he was getting better at being a something other than human or I was just that out of it. Scott caught me staring at him and directed his full attention to me. When his eyes locked with mine his uncertain face crumpled, glasses sliding down his nose as he frowned. Taking a step forward he started to reach out for me like Nellie had.
I frowned back at him, though mine was more confused than his was. Did I look that bad? Was what I was showing totally different from what I thought I was? If that was the case, what were they seeing that had both of them trying to reach out and touch me? Stepping back away from his hand like I had Nellie's I shook my head.
"You ok?" He said sheepishly.
"Fine" I breathed, turning my attention back to the coffin adorned with white roses and ivy.
Just looking at the motionless coffin made my chest tighten. An unearthly chill swept over me. That image of Kelvin I had fought to forget flared across my vision, blinding me with the bright contrast of fresh blood seeping across the flawless white of first snow fall. Someone touched my arm and I jumped, nearly falling flat on my ass. Rapidly blinking away a set of hot tears I stared at the person holding my arm.
A pair of ghostly pale, baby blues bored into me. My mouth opened, words catching in my throat. My jaw snapped shut, the surprise stunning me into silence. I had to swallow twice before I could remember how to talk. When I finally spoke my voice sounded strangled.
"Mother?"
