here Christmas and New Year is so elemental . We have had lightning storms, high winds, and now as I returned after a trip south , our ferry passed a search and rescue operation in progress for 9 crew of a vessel sunk in high seas in the Pentland Firth. The next day the sea is so calm, the sun bright . We walk along the cliffs for a Sunday walk. Might we find anything ? The sun sinks in the sky ; across the Firth we can see Scotland clearly , the black conical shape of Morven, ancient goddess of the Picts silouetted on the horizon. But the search has been called off . No one survived or found. A Dreamworks moon rises in a starry sky . We hear pinkfooted geese night flying north to start new life on the Arctic tundra. We drive home in silence. Nature can be beautiful but indifferent.
