What a heartbreaking story. Some of her symptoms sound like ones I experienced
after a period of severe stress. I had no idea how to address the situation at
the time, but I was forced to learn, primarily because I didn't want to back
on psychiatric drugs (like those I had been given for depression years
before).
If Nakesha had anything similar going on, no wonder she was paranoid and
didn't want help - there was very little likelihood that anyone would get her
the help she actually needed, not meds, but a decent diet and specific
supplementation for any nutritional deficiencies, treatment of other
underlying medical conditions, and compassionate care, someone to listen to
her.
I became homeless, too, but thankfully I was able to get shelter, and I had
time to read and learn about what was afflicting me. Medical care during that
time was initially no help - for instance, my diminished sense of smell was
dismissed as a consequence of aging, but what I learned was that I was zinc
deficient, and getting zinc in my diet did restore my sense of smell.
I know this beautiful woman could have recovered, to some degree, if anyone
had known how to actually help her, how to actually provide the support she
needed.
I recommend reading Dr. Emily Deans and Dr. Kelly Brogan, both of whom are
working to improve mental health care treatment and make it more effective and
humane, and both of whom focus on nutrition and other core issues (such as gut
health) that underlie ""mental"" illness.
