It takes Jere a moment to notice that the question is directed at him. With the realization comes that familiar stirring and tightening in his chest, the internal struggle that is not making an idiot of himself by gasping for air as he turns his attention to the speaker. He apparently can't set the book he was reading fast enough as the speaker clears her throat in impatience, which only makes the feeling intensify so his heart jumps into his throat and his fingers fumble the page. It falls onto his desk, page unmarked, but he doesn't touch it again.
The speaker is female. She has hair the color and texture of straw, though hers is much shinier and done into a ponytail at the base of her skull. Jere can't help but see her eyes as beady and cruel, though they're huge in her tiny face and a light blue color. She stands in front of his desk, leaning both hands on the wood, watching him with an expression that's openly friendly but obviously forced to cover exasperation.
She's waiting for him to answer, and Jere just wants her to leave, because she is a person and people give him a feeling like he'll throw up or cry and that would be very bad. After a moment of Jere trying to force down the panic, he answers, "Jere."
The word is muttered and half-stuttered as well. He mentally cringes and then finds himself unable to look up in her face for fear of seeing worse than exasperation there, so he focuses instead on his book. He had been reading The Gunslinger, recalling fondly of the scene he had been absorbing like a sponge would water.
But it would be rude to pick the book up again, and he had no desire to be scorned from a distance by the girl's friends, who had no idea that he had very good hearing and will hear every rude remark on his behavior.
"Jere," she repeats, thoughtful. "Short for Jeremy, right?"
"Yeah."
"So you're Harkin's brother, right?"
"Yeah." Twin, actually. Not that Harkin would ever admit to it; it takes threats issued by their mother to get him to admit they're even related. The two don't look alike in the slightest anyways.~
