Thor the thunder god visited last week; hurling his flashes - burnt out a few routers and bashed in a window. He was angry and kept rumbling even when he went out to sea.

we get something like that here in the summer when the evening comes on after a hot day a mist appears over a loch just above the surface sometimes it extends for two feet above the surface then the air is clear above .
if it also appears in a field the cattle and horses can seem to have no legs In stories it often refers to the same phenomena over marshes or where it can refer to marsh gas being emitted and causing a light effect making things spooky.
ancient Britons conducted ceremonies on marshes where they made offerings of weapons and armour and sadly human sacrifices. quite a lot of archaelogy has revealed all this. see PV Glob's ( yes real name), book The Bog People.
Conan Doyle evokes the fear and mystery of the marsh in The Hound of the Baskervilles. he has a great name for the marsh ; he calls it the Grimpen Mire. Mire is another word for bog . i wrote a Viking time story called Ulla Flota a Faeti, which in Norse means Ulla Fleet of Foot, where a young girl has to cross the great bog called the Flow country in Caithness to escape capture. you can read it here on Bookrix

It is 1014 and some of the Vikings, in the fleet bound from Orkney to Ireland for the great battle of Clontarf, take a detour to deprive a woman of her rightful inheritance.
