I'll head back in to try and tweak this again, using your suggestions. I was also wondering about a few of the things you pointed out here (all of these things actually)--how they might come off to the reader. I very much appreciate the advice and encouragement.

The writing, for the most part, is very good and an enjoyable read. Nice phrasing and flow. A few modern colloquial words - like "frikkin'" and "ass" - seemed out of place in a story where the writing took on an old-fashioned nostalgic quality. I didn't quite get the reason for the epilogue, and the past to present to past transitions were not always smooth, imo. The Red Sled of the title does not appear more than a couple of times. Perhaps it could have been referred to once more at the end to tie it together. (Possibly what she thinks about as she drifts into sleep?)With a little "tweaking", the story could be top quality. Definitely a contender.

You made me re-enter the world of my 'story', I'm aghast at what I found. I guess when I let it rest...it developed bed-sores :)
It's re-done now and a bit too long. I'll have to do something about that...later though., I'm burnt.

This was a great story, not really my cup of tea, but, I enjoyed it. You really love dogs huh? There were a few grammatical errors, But who doesn't have those?
All and all, it was really good.
