Sometimes...as you both well know...an idea for a story just pops into your head. I will admit, it was before I'd thought of or re-read Well's classic (which I pulled up after the fact).
I'd re-do the ending somewhat, save that I've already entered it. For better or worse, it will have to stand.
Thanks again to both of you for taking the time to read and kindly comment. I think that is what our writing labors are all about, really.

As usual, your story is imaginative, grammatically perfect, and oh, so well written.
As usual, I'm jealous.
Superbly written, imaginative, intriguing, loved it - except the ending....
But that can be changed, or continued.
