You build up well to the disaster and your depiction of the relationship between husband and wife is believable. There are a few places where the choice of word isn't quite right. John's "brazen" look for instance. Not sure what you're trying to say here; also the "feisty" celebration. Do you mean riotous maybe, or rowdy? These are minor points though. Good story.
