Hi Dawnfire,

The fire starts when the screwdriver that he dropped down the shaft years before gets jammed in the furnace - he drops it while looking for the cause of the fire that he dreams about that kills all of the children, not knowing that it happens in the future. In essence, he is responsible for the fire years after his death.
