This is a great short story. I immediately connected with the grandfather and the boy's anxiety about his girlfriend. What an ending. Didn't even see it coming. You definitely have my vote for "Frank."
Couple missed edits:
. . . came a docile sturring that can (could) only . . . (Need could to hold tense.
. . . but keep (your) you head held high.
He started to pick one (a) of his volcanic pimples. (Stray a needs cut)
