Politics are local and the politician’s job is to represent their constituents
as best as possible. What we’ve witnessed these last 17 months has been a
travesty of justice, decency and core American values to please a fanatical
fringe of the electorate. Many if not most of us are shocked and appalled by
this so called President and Congress’s silence/assistance. This vote is the
strongest repudiation of the status quo one could hope for and portends major
changes in who sets the agenda coming next Fall. Like millions of Americans
who have been witnessing the downfall of everything we stand for, I’m ready
willing and able to facilitate this shift back to sanity. We are thrilled.
This is meaningful despite the rights lame attempts to paint Lamb as some sort
of closet Republican. I cry “Sore Losers”.

As Mort Kolko alludes to it, in May of 1990 the Carpentras cemetery was
desecrated, and the body of Felix Germon was removed from the grave and
defiled. The following weekend there was a huge demonstration in Paris. Not
until 1996 was an arrest finally made-- a gang of young skinheads were
arrested and convicted of the crimes. I remember this so well because my
friend and I were driving in Provence, looking for the synagogue and found it.
It was not open--members of the congregation were at that very moment
discovering the desecration, which we read about in the next morning's papers.
Seeing the ""brown door"" to the synagogue (barely visible on page D1 in the
paper version) has given me a chill.

Bravo, bravo, bravo. What this country needs is more H.L. Mencken and Sinclair
Lewis and fewer 'voices of reason'. One of our two political parties is in
total thrall of the wealthy, willing to use racism and the suppression of the
vote and the press to maintain power. Trump is not an anomaly. Fascism is the
logical end game of the governing philosophy of the right, and, just as the
German moneyed class came to accept Hitler, our plutocrats mistakenly believe
they can exploit yet control the base instincts of our society. The '18
midterms might well be our last chance to right the Ship of State. I'm
reminded of what a German said when asked about the Hitler years, '""Imagine
your country governed by a cabal of criminals..."" Sound familiar?

Lowell, No administration in my memory was unable to manipulate intelligence
services for political gain. Well, perhaps Carter is an exception. But even in
the Obama days we made a huge giant mess of things in order to benefit not a
presidents career but the career of the Secretary of State. So I suspect we

Well of course justice Stevens is right, but given the near impossibility of
repealing that amendment in the current national culture, it should still be
sufficient to go back to interpreting gun rights based on the actual wording
of the amendment, which ties gun ownership rights to membership in a regulated
militia. And remember, in an era of science the inability to restrict the
practice and dissemination of the social fantasy of religion under the first
amendment is also a problem which will need to be dealt with some day...
