Well Written! It's bad enough when soldiers have to go into battle and fight wars, but the noncombatants that get caught in the middle is always heart breaking.
Vividly written...almost too clearly. War is hell. Many innocent people young and old have suffered on all sides. London, Paris, Dresden, and so on.
I can always depend on a superbly crafted story at your hand, John. Your descriptions are crisp and colorful once again, and clear to the end the tension and looming terror are palpable.
If this were not fiction, I would read that last page and say to myself that it had been taken straight out of the history books.
The two children absently eating the apples at the end is perfect.

I can just imagine the fear and utter chaos inside that building. And the children, I fell in love with the moment they paused to catch their breath. Wow. You did an excellent job at describing those images and scenes all around them. Perfection, my friend. Perfection.
