~Dreams Are For When You’re Sleeping~
By: Morgan
I always was the one who sat in the corner and talked to what people thought was myself while they played duck duck goose or hop scotch. Well at least that was in Kindergarten but one thing hasn't changed. The person who I talk to. At first I thought I was hallucinating, trying to find a way out but I wasn't. Maybe I should start from the beginning.
I was coming out of Art class when I first saw him. He was more than six feet tall and strong, really strong. He looked as if he was sixteen just like me. He was wearing a tight v-neck baby blue shirt with faded Blue Jeans. He had short spike dirty blonde hair and piercing reddish, orange, brown eyes. I will never forget his eyes. They looked past your fake smile and your outer appearance. They looked straight into your soul. He had a blank expression on his face and he stared me down as I exited the class. I tried not to look at him but his eyes followed me everywhere. As I turned the corner to go up the stairs I saw him again. There was no way he could have gotten there in such a short time. I tapped my friend, Ari, shoulder.
“Do you see him?” I asked and she looked up.
“See who?” She asked me and I looked up and he was gone. I was speechless.
“Never mind.” I said confused. We continued to our next class. We were writing notes about the Crusades and Russia in Global when I got a text. I nonchalantly looked down and read it.
‘Meet me?’ It said. I couldn’t help but smile. It was Steven. Steven and I have been seeing each other secretly for weeks. He is tall with black hair and a lip ring, meanwhile, I’m only 5 ‘5’ with reddish, dirty blonde hair and glasses. Steven and I are just Friends With Benefits (a.k.a F.W.B) but I wish we were more. I’ve never felt like this with anyone before but I know we will never be anything more. Sometimes I feel like giving him alter-maiden and tell him that we either date or stop the Friends with Benefits thing but Ii scares me to think that he might just say that we should stop being F.W.B.
‘Yeah, give me five.’ I wrote back and asked the teacher to go to my locker. Steven and I have a special spot to meet. Its downstairs where hardly anyone ever goes. First we make small talk and we do what we do and then we go back to class. Sometimes I feel like holding his hand on our way back but I’m afraid he will pull away or say something. When I got back to class I finished notes. I looked out the door and saw that same guy I saw earlier. I was starting to get really creeped out. He stood there staring directly at me for at least twenty minutes. I jumped when the bell rang. I quickly scampered to the hallway trying to see if he was there but he wasn’t. How could he disappear so quickly? Its humanly impossible! I shook it off and went to my locker to grab my jacket. I, alone, walked home from school as always. Today I got a weird feeling, like someone was watching me. I looked around, terrified that someone might be there but no one was. I kept turning around, paranoid that someone was there but every time I looked there was nothing there. This time I heard foot steps. I knew someone was watching me, following me. I jumped and turned around and sure enough that man was standing there. I screamed. He ran up to me and put his hand over my mouth.
“Don’t scream.” He said in a serious whisper. “Got it?” He asked. I nodded and then bit his hand. “Ouch!” He yelled as I ran away. “You can’t just make this easy?” He asked.
“Get away from me!” I yelled as I sprinted as fast as I could.
“You should join track!” He yelled behind me as he panted. I got tired fast and slowed but he didn’t. He practically tackled me but made it where I fell on him instead of him falling on me. He rolled over where he was on top of me and pinned me down.
“Now, can we just be civilized about this?” He asked. I lifted my knee and got him right in the groin.
“Oi vai!” He shouted and then rolled over to the ground grasping his jewels. I jumped up and scrambled to my feet and bolted to the nearest house. I banged on there door and a woman came to it.
“Please let me in! There is a man out here and I’ve escaped him but I fear he’s still out there! Please.” I begged. She shook her head.
“Child, don’t waste my time and lay off of the shrooms or tumble weed or what ever the kids are smoking these days.” She said. At first I was confused at what she said but then I knew what she meant.
“But I’m telling the truth! Please don’t leave me out here! I beg of you!” I yelled but the door remained closed. What did this man want with me? Why me? There are so many other girls that are more popular and skinnier... why must he be after me? I ran off the porch. I circled around trying to see if he was anywhere’s to be found. I fell to my knee when I didn’t see him. I was so relieved. I had to get home to tell my Mom, but would she believe me? No, I best not tell her. She wouldn’t believe me and it would just cause more trouble. I silently walked home, still jumpy. What was that man trying to do? I mean I know what he was trying to do but maybe it never happened. Maybe I was hallucinating. Yeah! That’s it! I was hallucinating! That explains it all! Now just slow down and breath. I took a few heavy breath and closed my eyes and let it all go. When I opened my eyes that man was standing in front of me. I screamed a high pitched scream and then he put him hand on my mouth again.
“Now, I don’t want to have to get ice but my junk so calm down!” He yelled. I stopped screaming. “Now, I’m going to let go of your mouth so we can talk.” He calmly said. I nodded as if I agreed but as soon as he took his hand off my mouth. As soon as he did I ran for it. I ran and ran and I didn’t look back.
“Come on! I trusted you, why can’t you trust me!” He yelled as I ran away. Why would I trust him! He acts like he’s going to rape me! I got tired of running. It seemed like I was running in circles. I dropped to my knee’s, dizzy. He jogged up behind me slowly. He stood over me blocking the sun. A drip of sweat fell from his face.
“I can’t fight anymore. Just get it done with.” I said as I closed my eyes.
“What are you talking about?” He asked me. I opened one eye. “I just wanted to talk with you.”
“So you’re not trying to rape me?” I asked him.
“No, oh God No!” He said. I sighed relieved but felt stupid for thinking it. He held out his hand to help me up.
“Why were you watching me?” I asked him. He didn’t answer. “Answer me!” I yelled.
“Wow, you sure don’t look like the loud type!” He barked back. I pushed up my glasses and stared fiercely at him. He knew I was serious. “Okay. This is going to sound weird but I’m... Well sort of...” He tried finding the words.
“Well spit it out already! I’m not getting any younger!” I told him.
“I’m sort of your Guardian. I try to help you understand the things that are not meant to be understood. Confusing I know but its what it is.” He said.
“Who put you up to this? To mess with me?” I started to yell.
“Jasmine, I’m telling the truth.” He said trying to quiet me down.
“How do you know my name!” I shouted.
“Because! Its like I told you!” He shouted back.
“Go away. I don’t want anything to do with you.” I said and walked away.
“The names Shawn!” He yelled as I walked away. When I got home I walked to my room and closed the door. I was tired. I sleep a lot but when I’m sleeping, I feel like I’m awake. I can’t explain it and I know its not normal but who can I tell. I couldn’t keep my eyes open anymore. I laid on my bed and closed my eyes. Within seconds I was back, back to my dream. Every time I sleep I dream about the same thing and If I wake up then next time I go back to bed it leaves off right where It ended. I walked to my school. It was in session. I walked up to my friends. In this world I had friends. In my Dream I knew what it was like to have friends and be loved. As I walked over to my friends I saw that guy again. He was leaning against a tree.
“Do you guys know who he is?” I asked them.
“No.” They all replied. I was getting ticked. Wasn’t this classified stalking? I marched over to him.
“Now you show up in my dreams?” I asked him.
“You can’t get rid of or avoid me.” He said. I ignored him and walked away. The bell rang. “Shit!” I mumbled to myself and jogged to first period. I sat down and he began teaching. After school I walked home and my Mom and Dad were there. They greeted me at the door.
“Hello, sweet heart!” My dad said as he hugged me. My parents looked exactly the same they just cared more than my actual parents.
“How was your day, pumpkin?” My Mom asked.
“Great! School was great! I have a question for you guys.” I said giddy.
“Well,” My dad said.
“What is it?” My Mom asked.
“Since I’m almost seventeen, can I have a car?” I asked. If I ever asked this to my parents in real life they would have shot the idea down before I even said.
“Of course!” My Mother replied.
“Do you want to go pick it out now?” My Dad asked with his usual big smile on his face.
“Yeah!” I jumped up and down. Everyone in this world always smiled. As if there was never a moment where they weren’t happy. My Dad and I got into his car and drove to our local dealer ship. We pulled in and a small man with a checkered suit on approached us as we got out of the car.
“Hellllooooo! Good Afternoon! What can I help you with on this beautiful day?” He asked very, very cheerful.
“My little angel here wants a car.” My Dad said as he put his hand on my shoulder. I nodded in agreement and the man looked at me up and down.
“I think I have the perrrrfffeecccctttttt car. Come with me.” He said and had us follow him. He showed us to a red 2012 car. It was new everything. My eyes lit up.
“Do you want that one?” My Dad asked. I nodded my head vigorously as I sat inside the drivers seat. I felt the interior and I knew I was in love.
“Do you want to take it for a test drive?” The man asked me.
“Yes.” I told him. He threw me the keys and I put them into the ignition. The sound was so smooth when it started. It was like music to my ears. I slowly backed out of the parking lot and drove a couple miles down the road. It drove so smooth and quietly. I was in love with this car. After I turned around and headed back I looked over to the passenger seat and that guy was there.
“Ah!” I screamed and pulled over.
“Ah!” He screamed back.
“Ah!” I screamed.
“Ah!” He screamed.
“Ah!” I screamed.
“Wait, why are we screaming?” He asked.
“Where the feathers did you come from?” I asked. My heart was pounding so fast I thought I was having a heart attack.
“Well, I came from my mother and then the rest, I don’t want to talk about.” He said.
“No! I mean how did you get into the car?” I asked him trying to get my breathing back on track.
“Magic?” He laughed.
“Why do you keep following me?” I asked him.
“I told you. I’m your Guardian. I’m not going anywhere.” He stated.
“Why do I need a Guardian?” I asked him.
“Because, although this world might seem dandy, there’s bad too. You just haven’t met it yet.” He said.
“Well, what can the bad do?” I asked him.
“More than you can imagine.” He told me.
“I want to wake up now.” I said while pitching myself. It didn’t work though. All it did was hurt.
“What are you doing?” He asked me.
“I want to wake up.” I said.
“Don’t you know that you have to go to sleep in your bed to go and get to this world.” He told me.
“I knew that. I was just testing you.” I told him and then drove the car back to the lot.
“That took a while.” The man said.
“Sorry. I drove slow.” I said and looked over to the passenger seat but the man was already gone.
“So, do you want it?” My Dad asked giddy. At first everyone being happy scared me a little and I was skeptical about this place but after I while I realized that its just a dream so what could happen.
“Yeah!” I said.
“We will take it.” My Dad said.
“Okay. Come this way and lets do some paper work.” The man said and showed my Dad into the car place. I walked around the car. Touching the paint and looking at myself in the reflection.
“Nice car.” That guy said and then I jumped.
“Oh my gosh! Stop doing that!” I yelled at him.
“Okay.” He said. “The names Shawn.”
“I don’t care.” I told him.
“Well, you’re going to be seeing a lot of me so I thought that you should know my name and don’t worry, I already know your name, Jasmine.” He said with a wink.
“You know, I would peg you as a raper.” I told him.
“That’s not nice.” He said back.
“Well, I never said I was nice, therefore I can’t promise you anything.” I told him.
“Why can’t we just get along?” He crossed his arms over his tight red shirt. I took a good look at his face. He was pretty cute but really annoying.
“Because you are kinda creepy.” I said honestly.
“Am not!” He argued.
“Really? You follow me to school. You pop into my car and chase me down the street. Call me crazy but thats creepy.” I told him.
“Okay, so maybe that is a little creepy but I have to watch out for you.” He said.
“Why?” I asked. “I’m not a child. I don’t need someone watching over me.”
“Yes you do.” He said.
“No I don’t.” I argued.
“Yes.”
“No.”
“Yes!”
“No!”
“Yes.”
“No.”
“You’re acting childish just by arguing with me!” He pointed out.
“I don’t care. I don’t need a chaperone.” I made clear.
“Okay then, jus think of me as a watcher.” He said.
“Stalker.” I corrected him.
“You are so reluctant!” He yelled.
“What can I say? I love to argue.” I said.
“We will never agree.” He said.
“That I agree on.” I replied. I turned back to the car. I looked at myself in the bright red paint. This world didn’t even seem fake anymore. I didn’t worry about it because it was a refreshing change. I turned around thinking I would see Shawn but the was gone.
“I really hate when he does that.” I mumbled to myself. I saw Dad and the sales guy walking out of the store shaking hands. Dad threw me the keys.
“Its all yours.” he said.
“Really?” I asked.
“Really.” Dad replied. He got into the passenger seat and we headed home. When I pulled in the drive way my Mom came out.
“Oh, its so beautiful. Say Phil, are you going to buy me a car like that?” My Mom asked my Dad.
“What ever your heart desires.” He replied and then kissed her.
“I love you, honey.” She said.
“I love you, Lily bear.” My dad replied. I shook at the disgusting, mushy talk they were talking.
See, in my world I wouldn’t even be getting a car and If pig flew and I did get a car that conversation would have gone like this,
“Oh, its so beautiful. Say Phil, are you going to buy me a car like that?” My Mom asked my Dad.
“In your dreams.” He would have and then passed her without a second look. He would have gotten in the house and then yelled, “Where’s my beer?”
My world is much different than this world and some times I never want to leave.
I walked in behind them and sat on the couch. I surfed through the channels when the television froze. I hit the remote but nothing happened.
“Mom! The tv froze!” I yelled but no one replied. In fact it got really quiet. I looked over at my Mom and Dad. They were in the middle of kissing but they weren’t moving. I looked out side and saw a bird stopped in mid air.
“What is going on?” I mumbled to myself. I turned to go back to the couch but stopped when I saw Shawn.
“What the-” I began to say.
“Watch your mouth.” He said.
“Don’t tell me what to do.” I said and sat next to him. “What do you want?”
“Nothing. Just came to ask how your new car is doing?” He asked.
“Its fine.” I said and got up. I stubbed my toe on the corner of the couch.
“Son of a Mother fo!” I screamed while clenching my pinky toe which had just turned purple.
“Ooh. That looks like it hurt.” He said while pointing.
“You are such a Jack-” I began to say again.
“Ahem.” He coughed warning me not to swear.
“Jack-wagon!” I finished. Not the words I wanted to say but it was better than what I suppose I was going to say.
“Better.” He said.
“Why do you keep coming around?” I asked him.
“Because, Jasmine, you have to know this world isn’t fun and games.” He said.
“What are you talking about? This world is just my dream.” I told him while hopping back to the couch.
“No, Jasmine. This isn’t a dream. This is real. You have a gift.” He said.
“Gift?” I questioned.
“Yes, a gift. You can go into a parallel universe where most everything is opposite. It may seem all fun and perfect but I’m warning you that its not.” He began to say.
“Are you high?” I asked him with a chuckle.
“Jasmine, I’m being serious.” He said and held my hand. I looked down at his hand which held mine and was thinking about pulling it away but for some reason I liked having him touching me.
“Okay, I’ve giving you the benefit of the doubt.” I told him. “What if this wasn’t really my dream, what if it really is a real world? What I’ve seen so far this world seems perfect. I haven’t met anyone mad or sad or anyone who isn’t smiling. Whats so bad about that?”
“Don’t you think its weird that they don’t know any emotion but happy?” He asked me.
“At first but I just thought this was my dream and I must have been tired of seeing so many hurt, sad, mad people.” I told him.
“Don’t try to find a reason for things because that will make your brain try to find a reason and then you wont see whats actually there.” He said. It kind of confused me but I thought hard about what he just said. It started to make sense. Sometimes the human brain really does try to find a reason for some things that aren’t mean’t to have a reason for.
“Okay.” I said quietly. “I believe you.”
“Good. That’s a start.” He said. I looked down at my toe. It was throbbing and was still a purple color. He looked down at my toe. “That looks like it really hurts.” He stated. I nodded my head and he walked over to me. He knelt down and put both of his hand on my foot and he covered my toe. His hands began to glow yellow and a light came from it. When he removed his hand my toe didn’t hurt anymore. I bent my toes and they still didn’t hurt.
“How did you do that?” I asked amazed.
“Its one of my gifts.” He said.
“One?” I asked him.
“Yes, one.” He answered. “I heal people. Other than that I have the same gift you do. I can cross between parallel worlds too. People who usually have this gift are people who were alone. People who know what its like to be on your own and who know what its like to be rejected.”
“How do you know what thats like?” I asked him.
“I was that person.” He said.
“You? You’re handsome and strong and really cute. How can you be that person? I know what its like because I’m that person. I’m geeky and I wear glasses and I’m always alone. Always.” I told him as a tear rolled down my cheek. “I’m ugly.” Shawn took off my glasses and brushed my hair out of my face.
“I think you’re beautiful.” He said. He touched my cheek and pulled me closed. His lips gently pressed against mine. They were so soft. So warm. As he pulled away my lips stuck to his. He kissed me again. I’ve never had anyone make me feel the way I do right now. He pulled away and looked at me.
“I’m, I’m sorry.” He said and stood up.
“Its okay. Its somewhat my fault.” I told him. He smiled. I stood up with him and looked into his amazing eyes. They were so beautiful and mysterious. They were red but orange with a small mix of brown. They looked into your soul. I ran my hands through his dirty blonde hair and kissed him again. As I pulled away from his soft lips I stared into his eyes. He kissed me once more. He put both hands on my cheeks and lifted me from the ground as he kissed me. He leaned me back on the couch. Then we heard the door open.
“Jasmine, I’m home!” My mother sang.
“Sh.” I told him as he laid on top of me.
“This isn’t your real world.” He reminded me. I don’t know how he could tell the difference. I couldn’t tell the difference. My Mother walked over to the couch. I smiled awkwardly at her.
“Hi, Mom.” I smiled.
“Hi.” She nodded.
“Hello, Ms. Hanson.” Shawn smiled.
“Hello.” She smiled at Shawn. “Jasmine, can I have a word?” Shawn got off me and I stood up. I followed her to the kitchen.
“Yes?” I asked.
“Jas, I love you.” She stated.
“And?” I asked.
“I know we haven’t had to pill talk yet and if you need it just let me know.” She smiled. Was she for real? My Mother would have been more lenient and my Father would have smacked me and said ‘If you get pregnant I’m kicking your ass out!’
“Woah, I’m okay.” I said. This was an awkward conversation with either of my Mom’s. “But thanks.” She hugged me. I hugged her back because, although I know its not my real Mom I imagined it to be. I haven’t hugged my real Mom in forever. “I love you.” I mumbled.
“Jas, I love you too.” She said. Her voice began to get deeper. I pulled away and looked into her eyes. It looked almost as if they were glowing red.
“Mom?” I asked. She shook her head and went back to normal.
“Yes, honey?” She asked in a high, soft spoken voice.
“Never mind.” I said and went back to the room with Shawn. My Mother stayed in the kitchen, making coffee. I was a little weirded out and a little scared. Its hard to explain.
“Whats wrong?” He asked.
“Her, her eyes.” I muttered. He immediately stood up and rushed to me. He put both hands on my shoulders.
“Who’s eyes?” He asked. He was serious. “Who’s eyes!” He demanded as he pushed me but kept his hands on me.
“Mom.” I murmured.
“Now listen to me very close.” He said and looked into my eyes. “What did her eyes look like?”
“They were glowing red and had a orange dot in the middle. Its never like anything I’ve ever seen before. And her voice. It got deep and ugly.” I added. He grabbed my hand.
“We have to leave.” He said and ran outside. He looked around. He got on a motorcycle. “Get on!”
“That?” I asked.
“Get on!” He demanded. He threw me a helmet and I got on. I looked at the houses around us and there were people coming out of them. They had glowing red eyes. What was happening?
He drove us to a lake. He got off the motorcycle and stood at the end of the pier. The wind was blowing something new. It was so much stronger than usual. My hair and clothes almost flew off of me it was so strong.
“What are you doing?” I screamed over the roaring of the wind. I looked over the wide blue lake.
“Wait!” He screamed back. What was I waiting for? He lifted his hands into the air as the sky turned black. A streak of lightening hit a near by tree.
As he lifts his hands into the air the lake lifted. My eyes grew wide as I saw the lake that I’ve swim in float in the air. Shawn ran onto the dry ground under it and opened a steel door that laid on the floor.
“Go!” He demanded. I ran down the steep stairs as he followed behind me. After he closed the door he lifted his hands and threw them down. Just as he did I heard splashing of the water on the door. I continued to climb down the dark stairs. It felt like the stairs never ended. It just get going deeper and the deeper the darker.
“Shawn?” I asked terrified.
“Just keep going.” He said. I had so many question I have to ask. The further I went down the cold it got. “Shawn,” I said again. “I’m scared.” I confessed. He went down and got on the same rung I was. I couldn’t see him but I could feel him.
“Don’t be scared. I’m here.” He said and touched my cheek. “Ready?”
“Mhm.” I mumbled. I was terrified. I didn’t know where I was going. I didn’t know who those people were and why they were following us with those eyes. I’ve never seen anything like this.
After what seemed like hours my foot finally touched solid ground. I felt my way around to a wall. I hung to it like it was my old baby blanket.
“Jasmine, where are you!” Shawn shouted.
“Over here.” I replied immediately. He walked over to me without any problem. “How can you see? Its darker than dark in here.”
“I have something sort of like night vision. You have it too. We all do.” He sighed.
“I don’t have it.” I said. “I can’t see you. I can’t see anything.”
“Close your eyes. Wish for it. Want it.” He said. I could hear he was close to me but I didn’t know how close.
I did what he said. I closed my eyes and wished. I believed I had it. I pictured me with it.
“Now, open your eyes.” He said. He paused for a second. “What do you see?”
When I opened my eyes I jumped. Around me were a least thirty other teens my age. I didn’t know where they came from. I looked up at the latter and it was only about five feet tall. Why did it take so long to get here? What’s going on? I looked down at the floor. It looked like water and it moved like water but when he touched it it was solid like a floor.
“What is this?” I asked cautiously.
“This is the Safe House. We Zygermoon’s have seen this coming for a long time.” He said but I interrupted him.
“Zygermoon?” I asked.
“Yes, its what we are.” Someone answered. Then Shawn went on.
“Like I said, we’ve seen this coming for quiet some time. The Oracle saw it. It said it would bring us a girl. Your descriptions match her exactly. You are her.” He explained.
“No, no, no.” I argued. “I’m just a small town girl. I’m nothing special.”
“You’re here aren’t you?” He asked. He walked over to me and touched my arm.
“I’m here but more likely on a technicality more than anything.” I softly spoke. “I’m not who you are looking for.”
“Jasmine, you are her. I know it.” He said and looked me into his eyes. His eyes speak to me. Its a little weird.
“How do you know?” I asked him. I was so scared I was shaking. How could all this weight be on my shoulders. I’m not the brave type. I’m not the strong, take charge type. I’m the shy, stay in a corner type. I don’t like loud noises and frankly, I get scared quiet easily.
“I know because I love you and Zygetmoon’s can’t love.” He whispered and softly kissed my lips. “We need you.”
“Okay.” I murmured. One girl threw me a sword. I looked at it in disbelief. My Mommy always told me not to play with sharp objects.
“Lets start your training.” Shawn said and got everyone in line.
Could he have been lying? Could It have just been a game to get me to do what he wants? Am I being played? The sad part is I think I love him too. I didn’t think I would ever say that... At first he seem obnoxious and I didn’t believe him but I love him. There I said it. I love him. I love him. I love him.
He threw me a sword. Everyone else picked up there’s.
“What am I suppose to do with this?” I asked him nervously.
“Fight.” He said simply.
“Fight.” I repeated. As he told us some moves and how to properly use our weapons I began to understand it. I don’t know how I could kill something let alone someone.
“Lets move out.” He said after a day of training.
“Wait. Shawn.” I said.
“I, I I can’t do this.” I stuttered.
(I will update soon! Tell me what you think on the update so far!)
