Together At Last

CHAPTER 1
There I was. Again, picking up Max from a bar. The first few times was okay but now he has made a habit of it every week. I guess the drinking didn’t bother me but what did was when he came home. Max had a tendency of having an anger problem when he was drunk. That's why I would stay in my room when we would get home. When I get to the club I see Max with a group of guys. They are the last people there. The bartender looked very annoyed. He came up to me and gave me Max’s keys and said that he tried to leave after having more than 5 beers and I wouldn’t let him go because I held up 3 fingers and he said I had 6. So I walked over to Max.
“Hey babe, don’t you look sexy tonight.” Max said as he grabs me and looks at his so called buddies.
“ Max, you called me for a reason. Lets go, now.” I said because I know if I stay there any longer I might get in trouble because of my age. Then a tall man walks over to me and ask to see my I.D and when I show it to him knowing that I'm only 16 he asks me to leave. I tried to explain to him that my boyfriend Max was drunk and called me to pick him up since the bartender took his keys. The tall man said that was fine and told me to take my time.
“Sarah, baby can we sit down and have a drink?” Max said to me winking at his friends as he put his hand around my waist.
“Max, darling you smell of beer and I'm taking you home now.” I told him smirking while moving his arm away from me.
With in the next 10 minuets we were in the car heading home. He was always quiet after being picked up from clubs because its kind of like having your baby sister pick you up since I'm only 16 and he is 19 he always felt bad that I was younger than him and was more mature. When we reached home Max turned on the TV and told me to get lost because I was annoying him. I thought this was pretty ironic seeing I never said anything to him. So I went to my room and study for the test tomorrow. Although I was only 16 I still made enough money to keep the apartment and stay in school. I tried to stay on the down low because I’m a foster child and my foster parents don’t care where I am. I found Max when I was 14 and he was 17. Max was understanding in the beginning. Then he began to be sort of mean. He didn’t care what he treated me like. When I was 15 I rented an apartment with Max and we have been living with each other since. Max helps me out a lot. When I’m in a store or something were I'm to young Max says that he is my brother and gets me out of trouble.
I’m almost done with school. I have one more year and I'm turning 17 in 4 months. Max had never gone to school. We met when I was taking my morning jog. I use to take jogs in the morning because my foster parents would always have morning sickness from being drunk.
Its now morning and as I'm getting ready for school Max comes out of his room and gets breakfast.

CHAPTER 2
“Hey, how did you sleep? Sorry, you had to come and pick me up, the stupid bartender took my keys away for having 8 beers.” He said like the bartender was out of line. I could tell that he was feeling bad that I had to come down at 2:30a.m to pick him up then study at 3:00a.m.
“Max we have to talk about this getting drunk thing.” I tried to say it were he wouldn’t get worried.
“Listen, I promise I won’t call you at night anymore to pick me up. Okay. Problem solved.” He said this with a grin like it should be taken lightly.
“Max I’m serious. I signed you up for an addicted class. They can help you with your problem.” I tried to say without yelling.
“No! I don’t have a problem. You! Now you have the problem. Sarah just cause you more mature and you have a job does not mean your better than me.” He said yelling. I felt hurt after he said that because I have cared and helped Max through everything.
“I’m doing this for you because I care. You have a drinking problem and this class will help.” I tried to get him to understand.
“Well, I’m not going and I don’t care what you say.” Max said with a nasty tone.
I said, “Thats it! Get out.”
“What?!?” Max said as if he thought I was joking but the sad part was I wasn’t. I wanted him out, if he was not going to get better than I don’t want to be with him.
“I’m serious. Get out! I don’t want you here. Don’t call me or text me. I’m done with you.” It really hurt to say that because I really did like Max.
He said while coming towards me, “Sarah you don’t mean that. I will go to the meeting I promise.” But by that time we both knew that it was too late.
The next day all of his things were out of the apartment. I never heard from him again. What makes me sad was when he left I saw something in his eyes. It wasn’t regret or sorrow it was relief. He was relieved that we weren’t together anymore.
A few weeks after Max left I found out I was pregnant. At first I didn’t believe it and Max was the only one I did anything with, so I new who the father was. I was so worried that my baby would grow up without a father. I grew up without any parents or anyone to love me and the thought of that happening to my child scared me. All these emotions crossed my mind and it was more than I could bear. I was thinking that I should tell my foster parents but then again they wouldn’t help. 3 months later when I started showing more of the baby I dropped out of school. I never got an education and I was pregnant at the age of 16. I didn’t know what to do.

CHAPTER 3
I have been working as an assistant at a law company. I have 2 months till my due date. Everywhere I go I feel like people are judging me. When people ask where Max went I say that we both have moved on. I really didn’t care if they believed me or not. When people stare I pretend that I don’t hear them talk. I pretend that I’m okay with all thats happening and I act like there is nothing wrong. I keep wondering when it will be over. I want to know when I can open my eyes. I think this is as hard as it gets. I no what it feels like to really cry. I no that the baby was no mistake and I will take care of it but I miss Max. I wish he was here for me. I wish he was here for the baby.
I have been depressed for a while. I don’t socialize very much. Since I'm seventeen I have one year until I'm officially done with my foster parents. Today is just another day. Today I do what I do everyday. Brush my teeth, eat, and read to the baby but today the phone rings. When I pick up the phone there is a woman’s voice on the other line. She tells me that she is my biological mother and they want to meet me. I didn’t know what to say. She told me her name was Mary and my fathers name was Scott. She said that giving me up was very hard but she was only 16. All I could think was that I would never give my baby girl up. I told my biological parents that I would like to meet them so we decided to meet at the Java Café on Johnson Street.
I’m so nervous. All I can think is that they will look at me and see that I am pregnant and wonder where my husband is. I walk into the Java Café and see a woman and man sitting at a booth and I go up to them.
“Mary, Scott?” I said hesitant. The woman has blonde, curly hair like me. We look so alike. I felt like crying. The man had my green eyes. I knew that they were my parents. Sarah the woman says. I say yes. She runs up to me and gives me a hug then apologizes and says that she feels like she already knows me.
“Sarah you are so beautiful. I’m sorry, its just I'm captivated by you. Are your foster parents here?” She asks looking at the door.
I wasn’t sure that I should tell them or lie. If I tell them they could make me go back.
“Um. No, they are not. I moved out of there house at the age of 16. They really didn’t have much care to where I was. Please don’t call anyone. I am making it fine without them. I am almost 18.” As I said this they looked stunned, as if they felt terrible. I kept begging them not to say anything to anyone. They told me that they would not tell.
Scott said, “I am so sorry we had no idea but I have a question. Who is going to help you with the baby. I’m sure you have a boyfriend or someone.”
“No one, I'm alone. The man who got me pregnant left 3 weeks after I found out I was pregnant. I never heard from him again.” I told them not looking at there faces, terrified what there expression would be. Mary looked at me, stunned.
“You’ve gone through everything alone? I’m so very sorry. Is there anyway that Scott and I can contribute? We would love to be around for the birth of your baby.” She said with hope in her eyes. I told her that would be nice.
The next day Mary and I went shopping for baby things. I was worried because I only get paid $200 a week and my apartment rent is $400. So I don’t have much money. After a few weeks Mary asked me to call her Mom. She was the closest thing I had to a mom and I do forgive her for giving me up. So the next day when we ate lunch at a restaurant I said Mom, can you pass the salt. She jumped up and hugged me. Then I told Scott: Dad can you get the waiter and he had a smile ear to ear. From then on I called them Mom and Dad.
Its time for the baby and Mom is by my side. When the baby comes out it weighs 8 pounds and 3 ounces. I decided on the name Olivia Lynn Joy. All I could think was that she is so beautiful.

CHAPTER 4
When we left the hospital I was riding in the car with my real parents and when I glanced in the mirror I saw something. It was my mother in the back seat with the baby. She was making faces and talking to the baby. It made me happy that my baby girl got to meet her grandparents but deep down it hurt a little that my mother couldn’t make faces and talk to me as I was a child. I guess its the little things that I missed out on as a child that most people take advantage of. Things like my mom picking me up from school, having my dad take me to a baseball game and having my mom cook me dinner. I missed them so much and I didn’t even know who they were. So people would be mad that they were given up but I'm so happy that I get to finally meet them. I’m happy my baby gets to meet them.
When we got home I took the baby out of the car seat and brought her inside.
“Sarah, don’t forget to give Livi a kiss from me before she goes to bed and Sarah if you ever need me to come over and help out with her I would love to.” Mom said hugging Olivia.
“I no and I won’t. Thanks for everything. I will call you tomorrow. Bye.” I said as a closed the car door and headed inside with all of Livi’s things. The first few weeks were hard. It took me a while to learn her cries. I never knew being a parent was so hard because I was such a straight laced child. It wasn’t that Olivia was bad or cried a lot but it was a lot to handle. Today I went out for an interview. Olivia’s diapers were becoming expensive and I needed a second job. When I worked I had Dad and Mom watch her. On the way to the interview I got a black coffee because I was up all night. When I sat my coffee down to get my money, mine and someone else coffee got switched. We both noticed immediately. When we returned each others beverage she introduced herself. Her name was Susan. I told her my name. She said that it was nice meeting me and we exchanged numbers because she has a baby that is just a little older than Olivia and we would schedule a play date. The next day I got a call and it was Susan.
“Hi, Is this Sarah?” She asked
“Yes, Who is this?” I asked
She said it was Susan and she was free so we made a play date. I went to her address and she was waiting for me. When I looked at the outside I noticed that it was a 3 story house. I was stunned. Susan had such a down to earth look and she was really nice. When I went inside we sat down to have a cup of coffee while the little ones were sleeping. Her sons name was Damian. He was 5 months old. My Olivia was only 4 months old. It was kind of fun for me to get out of the house. After that day Susan and I became best friends. Susan and her husband was 19. They were very nice to me. Brandon her husband always keeps saying for me to get out and find a boyfriend because he said I was smart and beautiful. I felt kind of weird having a guy say that to me because Max was never the kind to be romantic or nice.
Wow. I can’t believe it has been 1 year since I thought about Max. Every time I look a Livi I see Max’s blue eyes and his nose. It still makes me mad that she won’t have a father. I have decided to find a boyfriend because Olivia needs a male figure other than her Grandfather. So today when I was in the Java Café I took the first cute guy I saw and asked him out. He said he would love to and we sat down to have a cup of coffee. He said his name was Brett. He was 18 and was in town on business. I don’t know what happened that night but we clicked. Before I knew it he was kissing me goodbye on my door step. I told him goodbye and gave him my number but when I opened the door he heard the baby cry. He was amazed.
“Is that baby yours?” He asked with a blank expression. I was thinking about lying and saying no but I couldn’t.
“Yes, she is. Her name is Olivia Lynn. Do you have a problem with kids?” I asked him. He said he only has a problem if he can’t come in and meet her. When I was watching him play with the blocks with her I fell in love. I finally found a male figure for Livi. Brett and I did everything together. After a few weeks I even introduced him to Susan. She told me she approved and so did Brandon. I introduced Brett to my parents too. They said he was a fine young man. Mom asked me if he was good with her pride and joy and I assumed she meant Olivia so I told her he loves her. I was hooked I knew I was going to marry him. Later that day Brett told me he loved me and when I woke up breakfast was made and Olivia was already dressed. When I looked at the clock I saw it was 12:32 and noticed I didn’t get up at all last night and I was late for work. I asked Brett if my boss called yet and being the romantic he is he told me that he called me in sick. He told me that I needed a day off and he would take Olivia to the Zoo while I take my day off. I was so blessed that I had Brett.

CHAPTER 5
The next day I had to go to work. Today at work it was hectic. A new case came in and my boss Anne-Marie was going crazy. So when I got home I was so tired. Olivia was walking now and she never stood still so I go crazy at work and home. When I got home I found Brett and Olivia close together snuggled on the couch. They looked like they were sleeping to I went through the house and picked up while I had a free second.
The next day my parents were coming over to spend some time with Olivia because she had just turned 1. I asked Brett to leave because when he was around Olivia couldn’t take her eyes off him because she was so attached. My parents took Olivia for the day and me and Brett got some alone time. We started to kiss on the couch until Brett said
“Sarah you don’t have to do this. I no Max was the only you ever did anything with and I'm okay with waiting.”
I couldn’t believe it, he was so perfect. I told him he does so much for me and I wanted to do something for him so we made love that night. It was amazing. I knew that Brett was my sole mate.
The next day I had to leave for work and Brett stayed home with Olivia. When I got to work I noticed I left the key that unlocks the safe home so I went back to get it. When I walked in I noticed the doors were locked and I never lock them and when I went inside I did not see Brett or Olivia until I went into the nursery. I found Brett with his pants down standing next to Olivia. Olivia said Mama and Brett turned to see me stunned standing in the door way. He quickly pulled up his pants and said its not what it looks like I swear. I asked him then what was he doing as I was packing up his stuff and he didn’t have an answer. I felt like bashing his head in. Now I know why she was so attached. He raped my baby girl. She doesn’t even know what he was doing. I don’t know how long this has been going on. I felt sick. I couldn’t believe what my baby girl was going through. I can’t believed I made love to him. I’m so disgusted. That day I kicked him out. He called every hour and I never picked up. He sent me a letter it said:

Dear my darling Sarah,

I feel terrible that you had to see that. I’m so sorry. I no you can never forgive me. It has been a month please take my phone calls, please lets start over. I will love you always. Hope to hear from you soon.
Brett

I will never forgive him. Olivia went with Susan for a few days after I told her and my parents what happened. All I could do was sit and do nothing. So many things was going through my mind all at once. I couldn’t take it. I was thinking about suicide but I couldn’t. My baby had been through enough and I cannot abandon her.
It has been 5 months after that incident and I have been put on pills for my suicidal thoughts. When I told Susan about them she said the depression will make it worse but I wanted them. I needed them. I felt so bad for Olivia. He was molesting my daughter and she couldn’t stop it. I blame myself. I should have seen the signs. He was always happy. He spent every second with her. Oh god I feel sick. My dad tried telling me that there was no way for me to know but I’m her mother I’m suppose to protect her and I failed.
“There was nothing you could do. Stop putting yourself down. While your sitting here feeling sorry, you are not there for Olivia. So put your head up high and go to your baby girl.” My mother said trying to make me feel better but she was right. Feeling sorry for her and being mad at me and Brett is not helping Olivia, I have to be there for her.

CHAPTER 6
Olivia is now 8 years old. I have not ever tried to love again. People have asked me out but I won’t say yes. I’m terrified that something will happen to Olivia. In the morning I take Livi to school. She is so adorable. She has curly dirty blonde hair like mine and she has piercing baby blue eyes like her fathers. She loves to wear dresses and skirts. She says that they make her feel happy. She makes me so happy. She is the reason why I live another day. She is the reason for my existence.
Olivia doesn’t remember anything that happened with Brett because she was so young. A few times I was thinking about telling her but she is such a happy little girl and I didn’t want that to change. She was perfect and I didn’t want her to change so I didn’t tell her. My parents and I were very protective of her. We spoil her rotten but she never asks for a thing. I was not sure if my life had a purpose until I had Olivia. She was the answers to my prayers.
At night I tell her stories of her father, at least the good ones anyway. She is in love with the picture of him that I painted. She makes up a story that says he is a super hero so that is why he is not here with her. I think that it is harmless so I don’t say anything about it. She is such a smart little girl. She uses words that I’m not sure what they mean. She is at the top of her class and she was everything that I couldn’t be and I couldn’t be more proud. After school I had Mom pick her up because I was working late at my second job at the Java Café.
“Hey Olivia, are you ready to go?” My mom asks her as she is getting her bags ready to leave the class room.
“Yes, Grandma. Did you know that elephants live in Africa. We learned about it today. It was really interesting. Grandma I’m really hungry.”
“Yes, honey I knew that and we can stop at the Java Café so you can get something to eat and see your mom. Okay?” Mom said on her knees looking a Livi.
“Yay. Can we go now?” Olivia said jumping up and down.
“Of course. Let me just get your back pack first.” But by that time Olivia was already heading to the car. My mother didn’t think anything of it and continued to pack up her things. When she got out side she couldn’t find Olivia. She was panicking. She keep screaming out her name but she didn’t show up. When Mom ran around the school she found Olivia petting a dog.
“Grandma look a puppy. Isn’t he sweet?” As she was petting him and making faces. My mom was so relieved that she was okay. When they got to the Java Café she told me what happened. She said that she was so worried and she felt like having a heart attack. I told her that Olivia was fine and it was not her fault but she felt so bad after that happening.
The next day Olivia felt sick and stayed home from school. She said that her throat and tummy hurt. I took her temperature and it was 109 degrees. So I took her to the doctors and they said that she had an ammonia. They said that it was something that was not to be taken lightly. I asked them if she could stay in the hospital to make sure that she would get better and they agreed. I called my parents and they said they would stay with her when I had to work. I was so blessed for them to be back in my life. They missed out on my childhood but I’m great full that they are not missing Olives’.
After a few week Olivia was getting better and she came home. We home schooled her for a month or two while she recovered. We were very careful after that.

CHAPTER 7
When I was at the Java Café a few days later a man who was about 25 came and order a coffee and asked if I was free tomorrow. I told him I’m not dating at this moment and he walked away. The next day there was roses sitting on the counter when I came in and Beth, a girl I work with said that they were dropped of this morning. I looked at the tag and it said:
Sarah,
Just because your not dating at this moment doesn’t mean I’m going to take no for an answer. By the way my name is Stephen Brooks and I’m 25 and has lived here in Georgia all my life and if you don’t go on a date with me I will never give up.
Sincerely Stephen Brooks
(AKA Coffee Guy)

The note was sweet but I’m not sure if I can trust another guy so I asked Susan about it.
“Well Sarah, he seems like a pretty nice guy to me. I mean he is persistent.” She said. I was wondering if she forgot that Brett acted like the perfect guy and he was persistent and look what he did.
“Yeah and Brett was persistent too. I said looking at my coffee.
“You know there was no way you could have known about Brett and you have to stop blaming yourself. You can’t hate every guy for what one moron did. Not every guy is like that. Just look at Brandon, he is amazing.” I think it is sweet how Brandon is so close to her and Damian. If only a guy like that would find me.
I didn’t write Stephen back so the next day he showed up again. He asked me out again and I said no. He said he would be back and for some reason I believed him. I mean how bad could the guy be. I mights well give him a chance. So the next day I said yes and he ran to give me a gigantic hug. Later that day we went for dinner at a restaurant called the Givanies. This restaurant is very popular and hard to reservation but somehow he go them. When he picked me up he looked like a school boy. He had gaga eyes the whole day. For a good looking fella you would think he has never seen a girl in a dress.
“You look amazing.” He said as we sat at the table. It was so big in the restaurant. There was chandleries and sculptures. The hues and shades of colors was breath taking. It was very fancy. Through the whole night he couldn’t take his eyes off me. He told me that he was speechless the first time he saw me. He knew at that moment that he needed me.
“So do you have any siblings or family in Georgia?” I asked. I knew I was being snoopy but I honestly could care less. If I was going in a relationship I don’t want to be blind and not know anything about them.
“No. I’m an only child. My father wrote a song and I live off his royalties. My parents died in a car crash 4 years ago. It bothered me for a while but since I know where they went I’m fine with it. What about you?”
“Um. I was a foster child. My foster parents didn’t have much care for me and I moved out at the age of 16 but my real parents tracked me down 9 years ago and we have been very close ever since.” I wasn’t sure if telling him this was a good idea.
“Wow you had it rough. I’m sorry. So your doing better now? I’m sorry if I’m pressing any of your buttons but I just want to learn more about you.”
“Yes, I have a friend named Susan and she and my parents help a lot. I have two jobs and they watch Olivia for when me when I work.” As soon as I said Olivia, he almost spit out his drink. “Are you okay?” I asked
“Uh, yes and Olivia is your dog?” I had no idea what he was thinking when he asked me this. He knew that Olivia was not my dog.
“No. Olivia is my 9 year old daughter.”
“Oh how sweet.” He said but it sounded as if he said it sarcastically.
“Well, I have to go to the ladies room. I will be right back.” I walked to the restroom to call Susan to see how Livi was doing and she said that Olivia and Damian was playing Wii. I laughed. Susan said that Damian was getting mad because she was better than him. I laughed again. I told her to tell Olivia I would pick her up tomorrow and to tell her that I love her. When I came back to the table Stephen was gone. The next day I got a phone call and it was Stephen.
“Hi Sarah. I’m sorry for leaving yesterday but not to be mean.... I’m just not a kid kind of person. Sorry. I hope we still can be friends.” I told him that he could save his breath and to not call again. He never came to the Java Café again and I honestly didn’t mind.

CHAPTER 8
Its Olivia’s 13th Birthday. I wanted to do something special for her so I decided to take her friends and her to the Karaoke Club. It is a club for kids from the ages of 13-15. Olivia wanted to go last year but she was too young and I didn’t really approve anyway but this year I will let her. She was so surprised when I blind folded her. When we got there her friends Bethany, Damian, Steve, Sidney, and Jordian came out. She gave me a hug and told me she loved me. The look she had was priceless and I wouldn’t trade that moment for anything. Olivia got up on the stage and sung the song Impossible by Shontell. I never heard her sang before. She had such a beautiful voice. The song touched my heart. It reminded me of her father and I think she knew that. I think that she sung it on purpose.
The next day after school Olivia went to Susan’s to hang out with Damian. I got to leave work early and I went over to Susan’s to surprise Olivia. When I got there Susan said they were in Damian’s room working on a project. So I went up stairs to get her and I found them sitting on the floor kissing so I was very quiet. I made a noise that sounded like utum and they jumped.
“Mom!” Olivia said
“Hi dear I just wanted to surprise you because I got off work early.”
“Uh okay lets go.” Olivia said grabbing her jacket and running out of the house. Susan hears the front door slam and comes up stairs to see what happened.
“Is everything okay up here?” Susan asked. I looked at Damian. He was sitting on the floor. He wasn’t sure what had just happened. He stood up and looked at me.
“Damian, are you going to tell her or would you like me to.”
“Aw. Thanks Sarah. Call me in when you guys are done discussing this.” He tries to walk out of the door but I stop him.
“I don’t think so. You are going to stay.”
“Will someone tell me what just happened?” Susan asked in an irritated tone.
“When I came in I found my daughter and your son on the floor kissing.” Susan looked mad.
“Damian Jones! In the Den now!” Susan screamed. “Sarah I am so sorry. I hope this didn’t cause you any trouble. How about we talk to out kids then compare notes, then after that talk to them together?” Susan suggested.
“Good idea. I will stop over tomorrow.” I said leaving the house. Olivia was quiet the ride home. When we got home she went straight to her room without dinner. The next day it was a Saturday and I stayed home from work. I couldn’t believe that I saw my daughter kissing my best friends son. I knocked on Olivia’s door and there was no answer so I opened it up and no one was there. I saw the window open. I knew that she went to Susan’s. So I drove there.
“Susan did you see Damian last night after I left or this morning?” I asked
“No. Why?”
“Because Olivia is missing and if Damian is not here than I no where they went.” I told her and we headed up stairs to find Olivia sleeping on the floor and Damian in the bed. We pulled the covers off them and told them to get up.
“Mom, what are you doing here?” Olivia Asked
“Thats really funny because I was going to ask you the same question.”
“I, I, I, I, I don’t know.” That was the worst answer she could have given me.
“Olivia we told each other everything. How long has this been going on?”
“Not long. Just a couple of months. After a while Damian and I started to see how much we have in common and we started to go on dates after school.” Livi said.
“Why didn’t you tell me this?”
“I was afraid what you would say.”
“Damian what do you have to say for yourself?” Susan asked Damian.
“Mom I like Olivia a lot and hope I can continue to date her.” He asked his mother with puppy dog eyes. Susan and I talked and we decided that it would be okay for them to date because they would sneak around anyway and we don’t want Livi to get pregnant.
“We decided to let you two date.” Susan said and the kids started to jump up and down. “But you can’t be alone, you have to have an adult with you when you hang out.”
“Mom thats not fair. Its not like we are going to do anything.” Olivia said
“Yeah thats stupid.” Damian added
“You are lucky that we are letting you date and those are our rules so take it or leave it.” I told the two.
“Fine.” They said in unison.
After that they took turn going to each others house and hanging out. I caught them kissing a few times but didn’t say anything because I thought it was harmless.

CHAPTER 9
It was my 29th Birthday and my parents wanted to take me out for dinner. We had lots of fun. They told me that they were so happy that they called me 13 years ago because it has been a blessing to be in my life. I thought that that was really sweet. Later that day I heard a knock on my door and it was a man in his 30’s. He had mail in his hands. When I opened the door he said wow. I said excuse me and he said I’m sorry its just that your beautiful. I laughed and said that I was in leggings and a shirt with my hair in a bun, whats so beautiful about that. He said well here is your mail. It got switched with mine. So I ran to the kitchen table and got his mail and asked for my number and I told him that I was not interested. Olivia saw him flirting with me and came to the door. She introduced herself and I asked her what she was doing and she said hooking me up. I couldn’t help but laugh. I closed the door.
“Why did you do that? That guy was so digging you.” Livi said.
“I don’t care if that guy was ‘digging’ me I’m not interested. I’m not looking for a relationship. I got all I need right here.” I told her
“Come on. You’re almost 30, you’re not getting any younger and the clock is ticking.”
“Go to bed Olivia.” I told her
“Fine but I’m serious. Night I love you.” She said. Later that night I thought about what she said and she was right. I was almost 30. The clock is ticking. I really didn’t want a boyfriend or anything of that nature and Olivia was fine with Brandon being the male figure in her life.
The next day around 3 I get a knock at the front door. When I open it I see that it is Max. I couldn’t believe it.
“Sarah? Is that you?” Max ask
“Y,y,yes.” I stuttered. He runs and picks me up and gives me a big hug. He ask to come in and I say yes. I get us both a cup of coffee and we sit and talk.
“You look amazing Sarah. You’re 29 now right. You have grown so much. Every year around your birthday I get tempted to call you but then I decide not to.” He told me.
“Why didn’t you?” I asked him.
“Because what you said to me when I left. You said that you didn’t want me to call and that you were done with me.” He said and then I started to remember. “You must have a great job right.”
“Max how have you been?”
“Fine. After I left I went college to become a doctor and now I am the finest in my town in Texas and I have been sober for 13 years now.” He said with a smile on his face.
“Wow, that is amazing Max.”
“How about you? You finished school right?” I couldn’t believed how much he changed. He has short hair now. He shaved his mustache and he looks like a gentleman.
“Oh, uh. No, I didn’t finish school.” As soon as I said that Olivia walks through the door and puts her backpack on the couch.
“Hey, do you think you can take me to the Java Café to meet Damian?” Olivia asked without looking up to see anyone.
“Olivia I would like you to meet someone.” I say leading her to the table. “This is Max.” I told her and her jaw dropped. She knew who he was. “Olivia can you go to your room I will be in in a second.” I asked her.
“Nice to meet you Olivia.” Max said.
“Dang it. I was going to tell you in a different way.” I told him.
“Tell me what?” He asked “Tell me what Sarah? He asked again. “Who was that girl?”
“She is my daughter. Olivia Lynn Joyce.” I said without looking at his face, terrified what his expression would be.
“So when I left you go pregnant. Thats not as bad as I thought it was. I thought you were going to say that she as mine.” He said looking relieved. I didn’t say anything “She isn’t mine right? Sarah say she’s not mine.”
“I found out 3 weeks after you left.” I told him.
“Are you telling me that she, that girl in there is my daughter.” I saw Livi listening.
“Yes, I’m sorry.” He stood up rubbing his head. He didn’t say anything. “Max, please say something.”
“What do you expect me to say? Why didn’t you call me when you found out?”
“I didn’t want my baby to grow up around someone who was drunk all the time.”
“Thats the thing she is not just your baby. She is our baby. How old is she?”
“She’s 13.” I told him.
“13! 13 years of her life I missed. God Sarah.”
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry. She knows who you are. I told her stories about you. She is very smart at the top of her class. When she was 8 she made stories about how you were a super hero. That was her way of explaining of why you weren’t around.”
“She seems like a wonderful child.” He said looking at her door.
“She has been through a lot.” I told him.
“How so?” He asked. I told him that I can’t tell him here because she was listening so we went outside for a walk.
“She was molested as a child.” I told him. It was hard for me to say those words.
“What? Who? Why?” He was saying random words. He became weak at the knees. I told him the story of Brett and how I didn’t know and how long it took me to notice. I told him I had no idea how long it was going on. He was beginning to get mad and was asking where this guy lives and he was going to kick his ass. I told him I kicked the guy out.
“My real parents found me when I was 17.” I mentioned to him.
“Really? That great.”
“We are really close. They gave me up because she was 16 when she had me. The same age I was with Olivia.”
“Sarah I feel so bad that you had to raise Olivia alone and you never got an education.”
“Its not your fault. I love Olivia and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Livi and I are very happy together and she would like to meet you.” I said and he agreed so we headed back to the apartment. When we got there he met Olivia.
“Hi Olivia. I’m, Well I’m your.” He couldn’t spit out the words.
Olivia said “You are my dad.”
“Yes.” He said as she runs and gives him a big hug.
“I have been waiting a long time to meet you.” She said.
“I have been waiting a long time to meet you too.” Max said smiling.
After a few week I had Max meet my parent and they loved him. They were so happy for me to get my first love back. Olivia said that she liked him a lot. She said that she is sad that he missed a lot of her life but she is happy he is here now. A year after Max and I get married and 2 months later I am pregnant but this time it was planned.
