The entity within the VR set
Chapter 1: the beginning
Our story begins in the small village of Bakewell, United Kingdom. A family home of which no one would have imagined the horrors that awaited the Mitchell family when they moved into their new home. For David and Danielle this was to be a new start, a break from the hustle and bustle of the city life, a place where they could reconnect and start a new family. David waved his old job goodbye as they began their new life in the country. The Mitchell’s arrived early on an autumn morning to the village of Bakewell, ready for the new start which they were both really committed too. They had just pulled off the M1 signed Sheffield following the satnav, the time was 6am the roads were exceptionally quiet with only a few cars on the road either going or returning from work on the 21st of October. The couple were shocked to see how little movement heading to the village that they could see. The wildlife that could seen in the country was a shock from hundreds of bikes, busses and commuters, it was a pleasant scene for the two compared to the stress of busy life. The narrow roads heading into the village were tricky for David to drive around, the views were stunning as they headed into the village, the quaint shops and country bars were a great thought for the two on the days off from work, never had they thought they would be moving to such a quiet timid place.
When they first pulled up to the house and saw the old stone built terrace house they could see how different life would be. David and Danielle had always talked of moving from the smog filled cities to the fresh country air, but if only they knew what lied ahead within these walls. They parked the car outside the house and took a quick look around, a graveyard with a huge church greeted Danielle when she first opened her door but they were not bothered about this as they had no belief in any superstition. They had always thought that ghost stories were just in books or stories used to scare one another in the dark. From the street they could see how nice it would be in the summer and how fresh it will be to walk around the village and trails they had heard so much about. They headed up the stairs leading up to the new home, the mist on the windows on the outside and cold air made them smile, it was idealistic. The big green door greeted them, the old fashioned door handle was freezing cold, the keyway to the door was ready to be opened and invite the couple into the home. Just as David went to ring the estate agent for the keys, the estate agent who sold the house pulled up and was rushing up to the door to greet the couple, she was wearing all black, a very gothic look, she looked as if she didn’t really fit in.
She had apologized for not mentioning that the house was facing a graveyard and the photos did not show this on the website. Because the couple had a quick sale and had to move out they never got to visit the village or see the house, as they had known the person who previously lived within the 4 walls, it was a friend of David’s farther who had died of a heart attack in the summer so the house was a bargain for the couple. They knew it would get snapped up if they did not take the opportunity, so the estate agent was happy that the couple were not bothered by this. David did mention that after the sale of his last house he would have money left over to design the house as they wanted, so the estate agent left them the keys and went on her way. They were both smiling as she walked away saying how fast she seemed to run back to her car. David then used the front door key to open the door to what they thought would be a dream home for them. As the door opened there was a damp smell due to no heating being on. The walls were styled old fashioned as an elderly person would have been in the house for years. The green carpet on the floor had a stain where something had been spilt, they walked in to check the rest of the house out.
The living room had an old man’s chair looking out onto the street, they thought this must be where he watched people’s comings and goings. The fireplace was very old fashioned looking like something from a dickens film, dark wood with a metal stained fire guard and coal effect pieces. They were thrilled to know it was a gas fire and not an old coal fire, this would make it cheaper not having to run gas pipes to the living room. The walls were moldy where damp had been getting into the room, although it wasn’t an issue as this was going to be changed anyway. Going into the kitchen there was green tiles on the wall with an old cooker, dirty cupboards that were meant to be white but had gone an off white over time. Opening the cupboard one by one they had found dust inside which anyone would expect when it was an old man who had lived on his own for many many years. The back door led out of the kitchen an old 6 panel glass door, which was ready for a new one to say the least. Looking out to the garden as the sun was rising they could see it was very tidy to their amazement, as the rest of the house had much work to be done. There was an old water feature covered in lime in the shape of an eagle looking at the house. They continued to explore the rest of the house.
They headed up the stairs of the house which was extremely cold, the hand rail was old and tired so they didn’t touch it going up. The carpet was the same old green style as the hallway, as they got to the top of the stairs they had found 2 rooms and a bathroom. Danielle joked saying “At least we have a spare room for if we fall out,” David laughed and continued on. When he walked into the bathroom he was not so shocked to see the old style of it, and the old stains within the shower was ready for a good scrub. But the couple still understood it was a project they had taken on. They headed into the bedroom which was spacious, this was very attractive to Danielle because she had always wanted a huge wardrobe full of clothes for going into the village pubs and walking gear for the trails. As they walked around to inspect the last room they felt such a cold shudder, David joked saying “Oooo this room must be haunted!” as they laughed but there was a disgusting smell coming from the room and they wondered why it was there. They opened the window to ventilate the room. They got to work unpacking their gear into the house, they only had the basics as they would be decorating it with new furniture. They headed into the room they had not been in which was the dining area, they could smell the same horrid scent which they had previously encountered upstairs.
They opened the window again to clear the smell thinking it was something which was just lingering within the house. They continued to move furniture into the house, as they were moving the small things from the car the removal men turned up with the bigger goods. One of the removal men walked up to Danielle and said “I didn’t realize there would be 3 of you moving in here.” She said “What do you mean?” He explained as he drove up to the house he could see an old man in the top window, she laughed and said “Yeah ok trying to scare me because it’s close to Halloween!” He replied with a serious face “No, I’m being deadly serious. I saw an old man in the front upstairs window.” She ignorantly ignored the removal guy as they carried on moving furniture into the house. By 12pm the removal van had gone and the Mitchell’s were heading out for a walk to see what the village has in store. As they walked out of the front door they had heard a movement upstairs, a cracking kind of sound. They turned and said to each other it must be the heating coming on as its been out of use for such a long time. Danielle told David about the removal man’s sighting and they laughed, saying “It’ll be the old man’s knees as he’s moving around,” They closed the door and headed out joking as they walked down the street.
The streets were getting busier as people were starting to go about their daily business. The shops that had all now come to life were inviting to the public, offers in the windows for furniture, household goods and electrical appliances. One of the stores had a Virtual Reality home design kit which David and Danielle thought would be ideal to help them renovate the old out dated property they had just bought. They proceeded into the store and asked the shop assistant about the kit. Well one would assume that at £200 it was a bargain that was waiting to be snapped up. They asked if the set had any instructions. The shopkeeper advised the couple that the set was second hand and had no instructions from the previous buyer. However, there was instructions on the website if they were unsure how to use the software. David said “Sure that’s how things work these days I guess.” They continued to look around the store for further useful equipment and bargains. They both agreed the fact that the town seemed to already be taking a shine to them. As they looked around they could see the shop was of an old fashioned build, it had wooden beams showing. Really old windows from the Victorian ages, the flooring was marked where things had been moved around. It had a fusty smell to it, as you would expect in an old shop like this one. The idea seemed to thrill the pair as this kind of technology was just their thing. David proceeded to the checkout with the VR bargain as they left the shop.
The quaint shops, the homemade pie shops, the butchers with fresh produce, it all seemed to be such a delight from the overpriced supermarkets that the couple were previously used to. They continued to look around the village to see what else it had for them, as they were walking they saw a lot of pubs and restaurants that were appealing to the eye. On closer inspection the prices were so appealing to the couple and they knew it would be all home cooked. They could smell the meals from the outside coming from the extractor vent, you could almost taste the Yorkshire puddings that were leaving a smell onto the street. They decided to have a little look around the shops before they investigated any home cooked meal with a few drinks to celebrate their moving house. They saw a second hand furniture store that was ideal for them as they were looking for throw away old furniture. They didn’t have much within the new house already, a brown leather couch that had worn parts which would be comfy for the pair to relax watching television on a rainy evening. They bought the furniture and placed a time slot for it to be delivered to the house later that week along with a bed which was and old oak solid bed which was strong still even though it had aged. The couple went on to explore.
Chapter 2
The Old Star Inn
They decided to get some food as their bellies were rumbling from the previous amazing smells around the village. They saw a pub on the corner which overlooked onto a shallow canal, it had a big bay window so they could watch the villages movements to assess how things worked around there. They continued onto the pub walking over the bridge full of locks, they wondered and asked a couple who they saw putting the lock onto the bridge what it was about, they admitted they didn’t really know why but people seemed to engrave their families name and lock it to the bridge. Danielle said to David “Oh wouldn’t it be nice if we did this?” He agreed saying “It would leave our mark
