Networking used to be the domain of gurus and large companies. They had the means and technology to network their computers thus connecting their resources and their software. Networking wasn’t considered a home necessity because most people could only afford one computer. Today most families have multiple computers in their home and home networking is finally a reality for the average family.
The multiple computer household has more tasks to complete than email and web surfing. People shop for their basic needs on the computer and use their laptop or desktop as a multi-media device. Families use the computer to watch the news and their favorite movies and television. Some people create home based businesses to increase their income or create wealth and be independent. The one computer home is a thing of the past.
Today networking has become a necessity to thousands of computer owners and it’s not a technological novelty anymore. The idea of having multiple computers networked together is not a new one. A networked system can save storage space on the hard drive and increase the operational speed on some machines. Space killing programs can be put on one computer that you can network to another computer saving precious memory on the main computer for more important things.
There are several options in home networking and each choice gives you certain advantages that others will not. This text will show you the different options and let you make an informed decision of which networking system is best for your needs. The networking system that you choose can optimize the speed of your system and give you a myriad of options like increased storage and the ability to load and use large programs at will.
Home networking, simply stated is a method or a design that will allow multiple computers to communicate together. Networked computers can share large media files of movies and music or documents and printers, CD burners, and other hardware devices can be run from one computer to the other. If you are a gamer, a networked system can give you more speed and space for the ultimate gaming experience.
Whether you have a laptop or a desk top, your home computers will work as a team to give you the best in data retrieval. Why carry all your unused, but important files on one computer. If you have a networked system, you can retrieve those files from any computer in the house. It is like having a super system of storage and retrieval access from any location or machine that you are using.
What is a Cable Modem and is it Right for You?
For years having cable television was a big focal point in many homes, back then the options were antenna ears or cable. Technology has improved cable and it offers more options to homes and businesses through a cable modem. Your cable provider can hook up your television and your computer too. As you read you will discover how it is possible to get high speed internet through a cable modem.
Before you can outfit your computer with cable internet, you will need to contact your local cable company and order the service. They will have a technician come out and set up your service and provide the modem to get your computer online and operational. If you wish to hook it up yourself they’ll still provide the modem.
All types of internet connections have pros and cons including the cable modem. Customers of cable modems have to share a bandwidth with others. If you’re lucky and you are the only one on that bandwidth, your internet connection and speed is will be great, as other users are connected to the same channel and bandwidth that you use, you’ll notice that your access speed declining. As more people move into your area or begin using the cable modem your performance may decline. Luckily, this can be easily fixed by the cable company. All they have to do is to add new channels to the bandwidth and to break up the users between the different channels.
A great function of a cable modem that is different from other high speed internet providers is that your ability to log on to the internet doesn't depend on your signal strength. The cable modem makes sure that users have the right amount of signal every time they access the internet.
DSL - What it is and whether it's an Option
DSL is another option for connecting to the internet. If you have never heard the term DSL before or aren't sure what it is, DSL stands for digital subscriber line. DSL is a form of high speed internet connection that uses your phone line to connect your computer to the internet. Many might think that this type of connection choice might cause interference with using your telephone.
The reality is that not only can you surf the internet with a high speed connection, but you can use your phone line while doing so. If you have ever used a regular telephone connection for the modem to connect the computer to the internet, you might have realized how slow the speed is in comparison to a high speed connection. Though DSL uses the telephone line to connect your computer to the internet it is much faster than a regular telephone to modem connection. The telephone company that you use for your DSL connection will send out a technician to set everything up and will provide you with the modem.
Of course, DSL service is not perfect either; there are disadvantages to the service too. DSL runs primarily on the strength of the connection. If you’re located closer to the main office, your signal will be strong. The farther away that your location is from the main office, the weaker your signal will be. Sometimes you will notice that you can receive information over the internet a lot quicker than you can send it. For example, receiving an email with lots of information or pictures in it is going take a lot
