One

“I hate school so much.” I said to my best friend, Cole. He nodded. “It’s the week after New Years and I still have a hangover.” Cole smiled at me. I smiled back. Cole was tall, about six foot, his black hair fell into his eyes, covering his forehead, you could hardly see his light blue eyes. The smile left his lips when he looked over my shoulder. I went to go look, but he grabbed my arm and started walking the other direction. “We're going to be late for class." I pulled out my phone. "We still have twenty minutes." Someone bumped into me and I turned around to see who it was. This caused Cole to let go of my arm.

That's when I saw it. They were laughing, his hand on her hip, hers around his shoulders, then they kissed. I turned around and saved my way to the girl’s bathroom.

I cried until the bell rang, then decided that I didn't want to be late for class. So I cleaned up and went to first period.

I got there just before the tardy bell rang. The lights were off, as usual. I found my seat in the dark. "Teacher said that we are going to watch a movie." Cole said. I nodded and pulled out my phone. Cole sat next to me, so I don't know why he didn't just say something. I saw that I got a message from Cole. I opened it with a sigh.

He's a dick okay? Ignore him. He doesn’t know what he is missing out on.

Tears threatened my eyes as I typed.

I don't think so. They looked so happy. Dating is rigged anyways. It's about how popular you are or how pretty you are. I'll be fine.

I felt something wet fall on my hand. I wiped it off with my other hand. Then pulled my sleeves over and wiped my cheeks. I'll be fine, I told myself, he's just a guy, there are plenty of fish in the sea.

We weren't even halfway finished with the movie when the bell rang. Second period, all we did was talk about the lame ways of humans, by third, time started to go by slow. I already made a deal with myself to be the last one in class. I was dreading it that bad.

I had a class with them. I've liked Domonic since fourth grade. I knew I didn't have a chance and him being with her proves it. We've been friends I've been there when he needed someone. He probably sees me as a friend and nothing more. But I'll still be there for him.

The bell rang to go to fourth. I walked as slow as I could. I knew that every step that I took, I was getting closer to them. The bell rang as soon as I got inside the room. Dominic sat two rows in front of me. Sitting next to him was Nicole. I couldn't help but to let out a tear.

Before I knew it, class was over, and I was walking as fast as I could to the bus. If I were around them any longer, I would cry. I don't want to cry anymore. I'll save my tears for another day. When I might actually need them.

I ran the rest of the way to the bus. I got to my seat next to Cole. Who -by the way- was glaring at me. I glared back. "What?" I said sternly. "Really, Carla? He's. Now. Worth. It. Forget him."

"Yeah, He's not worth it, Carla... Who’s not worth Carla?" My other friend, Audrey, said. "Domonic Hervera." Cole said sternly and kept glaring at me. Audrey opened her mouth in an 'o' shape. "Isn't he dating Nicole Harvester?" I nodded and looked forward. I will not cry. I will not cry. I will go home, do my homework, then, take a hold how shower. I told myself that the whole bus ride home.

Two

*Two Weeks Later*

I was sitting in first period, the day started out normal. I would see Domonic and Nicole talking, hugging, kissing. As sad as that is, it became my new normal. Something changed by the end of second period. By third period, I became restless and savage. I snapped at anyone who talked to me or looked at me wrong. I ran to the bathroom to check if I was on my period. Even though, I knew I still had a few weeks till it came, never hurt to check.

I washed my hands, then dried them. Then, everything slammed down. I knew who it was, now-a-days, people call him Death. He was scratching the walls, the celling, the stalls. I covered my ears and ran out into the halls, out there Death was scratching the lockers and the walls, but knocking on the doors. I ran back to my third period, and got ready to go to fourth.

When the bell ran to go to fourth, I was the first one out. I wanted to be the first one to fourth period. I pushed people out of my way while they yelled profanities at me. I pushed someone out of my way and when I did, I got a really bad smell. "Ew. Dude, take a shower." I yelled back at him. He didn't reply, let alone turn around.

I got into my fourth period and almost cried in relief. I was the first one in here. I got to my seat and pulled out my phone. I went through all my messages with Cole from third period until I heard someone call my name.  "Carla..."I looked up. "Yeah? What's up, Domonic?" He shrugged.

"Nothing really. Could you sit with us today?" I looked over at the seats. “Uhm... I don't know. Would Nicole and them be fine with that?" Domonic nodded. "If not they can suck it." Domonic Smiled. I smiled back. "Yeah, I guess." I grabbed my bag and sat two seats away, to leave room for Nicole to sit. "You can sit closer to me. Nicole can sit on the other side of me." I moved over one seat. By this time, the room was starting to fill. We still had two minutes till the bell rang. I took out my phone and scrolled through my Instagram feeds. Nobody was really posting anything; I wasn't following that many people anyways.

I put my phone in my pocket as the bell rang. I looked up at the stage and waited until the teacher started talking. "Where's Nicole?" I heard Domonic ask Alex. I looked over at them and knitted my eyebrows together. "Text her." Alex said, shrugging. Domonic pulled out his phone and started texting Nicole.

"All teachers need to close and lock their doors. Do not let anyone in or out. We are on full lockdown." I was still looking at them. I already knew what it was. Domonic looked over at me. "Are you okay?" He asked. Domonic brown eyes were pleading. He wanted an answer, but didn't want a bad one.

I can't tell him. Not right now. Domonic won’t believe me. I pulled my brown hair into a pony tail. "I'm fine. It's not me you should worry about. Okay? Worry about you and your safety before anybody else." I pulled out my phone to text Cole.

Are you good?

I turned off my screen and looked at Domonic, who had his head in his hands. "I knew she was cheating on me. I was going to break up with her. I thought that maybe she would change. She never didn’t. I wanted to ask you for your opinion, but I feel like I already ask to much of you." I put my hand on his shoulder. Domonic looked up from his hands. "Do I ask to much of you?" I shook my head. "No, I like helping. If you wanted to talk about something you knew you could talk to me. I am and always will be there for you." Domonic smiled at me. I pulled some of his dark hair out of his face.

I felt my phone vibrate. I pulled it out and looked at it. It was my mom.

Are you okay? Are you hurt?

No mom, I'm fine. What's wrong?

The news said something about the dead coming back. I was scared for you.

I'm fine.

Okay. Saved me from a heart attack.

Thank God... Wait...

"Oh, my God."

Three

My mom sent me a link to the story she heard on the news. "Teachers, when the bell rings, do not dismiss." By now, all the doors were locked, and everyone was freaking out.

I handed my phone to Domonic and he read it. He gave it back to me, then sighed. I started to get a head-splitting headache. I wanted to yell at everyone to shut up and to sit down. The teacher finally walked out on stage. "I was just on the phone with the office. They sent what's going on to all the staff and parents enlisted." She sighs. "There is a list of things we need to talk about. One is what is going on outside those doors. I don't know how many of you have been in touch with your parents, they said that the news broadcast caused a lot of ruckus and that their phones are blowing up every second. I don't know how to say this, but, the dead are walking. So take out your phones, text, call, whatever you can to make sure your loved ones are alright. They gave this rule to is, so you can make sure everyone is okay."

I whipped out my phone and started rapid texting, my Aunt, uncle, dad, grandpa, Audrey, Cole, hell, even Nicole. I got a reply from almost everyone. Almost. My Aunt and Uncle are locked inside their house, his guns all in order. Classic Uncle Benny. My dad said that he left work and is now home with my mom. Grandpa called and told me that they are not letting him leave his room until they get an okay. I didn't get a reply from Audrey, Cole, or Nicole.

A lot of people were crying. Some of their loved ones didn't respond back.

I didn't know I was crying until I felt a hand wipe off a stray tear from my cheek. I pressed my hand to his against my cheek. "Carla?" I look over at Domonic. He opened his mouth to say something, then changed his mind. "I'm sorry." Domonic said instead. I moved my hand and his fell. Domonic’s phone vibrated. He pulled out his phone.

Once everyone was done texting friends and family, she told us to stick together, to sleep on the floor and to take shifts, sleep, watch one another, like a family. I was by Domonic the whole time. Just sitting there until someone said something to me.

I didn't know that I was sleeping until the sound of the announcements woke me up. "We have found a way to bring food and water sent to all classrooms for breakfast, sometimes lunch, then dinner. Water will be given out. About 30 gallons per room. Remember: Keep doors and windows shut and locked. There will be a way Mr. Hult would knock. You would know when he gets there. We will make announcements for students to be relieved when it is clear."

When she hung up, I felt Domonic put an arm around my waist. -To be honest, I didn't even know he was there. - "I’m tired." Domonic said. I nodded. "I'm going to sleep. Can you wake me up when the water gets here?" I asked him. Domonic nodded. I smiled, closed my eyes and fell back to sleep.

Four

I woke up to Domonic shaking me. "Hey, they water is here." I sat up and grabbed my water bottle from my bag. "Do you want me to get you something to eat?" I shook my head. "I'll save some food for people who are actually hungry." Domonic shook his head. "How about I get something and we share it?" I nodded. I was in no mood to argue. I walked over to get some water and filled my water bottle up. I walked back over to Domonic, who already had food.

"What time is it? My phone died." I bit the inside of my cheek. "It's almost eight in the morning." He handed me a piece of toast. I took a bite out of it. "That's fantastic. Been at school for over twenty-four hours." I cringed. I offered him a sip of my water. He swallowed and grabbed my water and took a sip.

I dazed off at the wall behind him. The feeling came back. The walls were filled with screams, I had to cover my ears and shove my head in my lap. The screams turned into whispering, then the whispering turned into scratching. The sound was like nails on a chalk board. The it stopped all together.

Domonic had his hand on my shoulder, he was trying to lift me up. When I sat back up, I was panting. I ran my hand through my hair. "What the hell happened?" I was hoping that this was all just a crazy, stupid dream. "I- I don't know. I kept hearing someone screaming, then they stopped and started whispering, then the walls, they started scratching the walls.'' Domonic looked at the walls, then at me, then back to the walls. "There is nothing on the walls." Domonic said turning his head back towards me. "You don't believe me?"

"That's not what I'm saying. I'm saying-" Someone started to scream. I turned my head towards the screaming, and saw someone backing away from another person. I got up and ran to help.

I knew what happened. Someone in here was infected. I grabbed the girl, Lily, and pushed her towards Domonic. "Everyone, get on stage." Everyone ran towards the stage, except Domonic. "I'm not going to leave you alone." I nodded. I knew what I had to do. Exactly what I had to do. I grabbed a text book from my bag and started hitting it until it was on its knees. I looked into its eyes. They were blank, no emotion. Nothing. The skin looked like stone, and where I was hitting her head, there was no blood. I hit it on the head one more time and it fell to the floor.

"Stop, Carla. Give me the book." I looked back at Domonic. "She wants to be dead. Domonic." I looked back at the girl. "You can see it in the way that she walks." Domonic took the book out of my hands. "Let's take her outside. She would feel a whole lot happier out there. "I looked ip on stage. "Was anyone else bitten? Not just today. We need to know so that way we can have you take her outside. You are going to have to stay out there though." Nobody spoke up. "Fine-" I looked back at Domonic. "I'll do it."

"No, not alone." I grabbed the book from him. "Alone. You stay here. I'll be fine. I promise. That you for caring." I leaned and kissed his cheek. "If I don't come back, please watch over my family."

"I won't have to, you'll come back."

"I said 'if'." I smiled at him.

The whispering started again. I looked down at the corpse. Her mouth was moving. I looked over to Domonic, he was looking down at the girl. "Is she... whispering?" I looked back at the body. I heard the whispering get louder and louder, until it was shouting. The people on stage covered their ears and started crying. I would have too, if I wasn't intrigued by what she was saying. It wasn't at all what the walls were saying. They were screaming ' Death is on his way' what the girl was screaming was 'Carla's touch brings Death to his knees and makes him beg for mercy.'
