I woke up covered in sweat. My black hair stuck to my forehead and I tried to brush it away without success. My breathing was hard and fast. The nightmare was still crystal clear in my memory, so I tried to calm myself, which resulted only in remembering the horrific scenes once again and getting scared. With a twinge of panic, I grabbed my sheets and cuddled myself up. I resisted the overwhelming urge to cry for my parents. After my heart rate normalized, I leant back on my pillow and sunk into an uneasy sleep.
The bed creaked loudly as I shifted my body into a more comfortable position. I was still half asleep and couldn’t think straight until a thought struck me. I had promised my best friend that I would help him with his fishing chore. I sat up and yawned loudly, trying to get the sleepiness out of my body. After searching my small and old room for some pieces of clothes, I checked the sun for the time. I relaxed because I still had some time left before I was expected to meet my friend. It was rather warm outside, for it being only spring. I breathed in deeply and savored the scent because the air in my room was stuffy and dusty. I crossed the small stream that ran through my village with a jump, since the bridge was pretty far away. Suddenly, I was getting excited about meeting my friend. I hadn’t seen him for a long time, because he’d always been busy helping his parents at the farm or with other chores. After I had urged him long enough, he had finally agreed that I could help him today. It didn’t bother me that I had to help him with fishing, because I also did that on a regular basis. Fishing was easy and you could cook great meals with the haul. Unfortunately, my fishing rod had broken a few weeks ago due to age and careless handling, so I had to borrow one from my friend’s family. I picked up my pace and started to see the silhouette of the house I was heading for. I could feel the grin that was slowly spreading across my face despite all my efforts to stop it.
