The morning sun was hot on my skin and on the boulder as well. I stretched my arms out above my head and squinted at the big, bright ball of burning gas. What a lovely thing to wake up to, I thought to myself. I let my arms fall and immediately felt the scorching heat on the boulder and heard the sizzle of flesh being burned. “Ouch! Damn it!” I yanked my arms up and took a look at them. The burns were red but that was about it. Can this morning possibly get any worse? I thought aloud. As luck would have it, I got my answer sooner than I thought. Out of the winding trees came Ivory carrying something that resembled a……… backpack? I’m pretty sure I looked just as puzzled as I felt because she shook her head and pitched them at my head. Obviously she was still pissed about last night. But what could I do? I can’t just randomly have sex with my best friend’s charge whom is also a wolf and whom I barely know a thing about! That would be so wrong on so many levels it is unreal! I shuddered as if trying to shake off the thought. “Look, Ivory-“I began but she cut me off abruptly. “I don’t wanna hear it!” she snapped. “Just get your fallen angel ass dressed. The clothes are inside the bag and comb that tangled mess you call hair while you’re at it. You’re going to high school.” She finished and walked off.
Wait, what did she just say? High School? I’m a dead guy! How am I going to attend a school for the living?! I opened the bag and got dressed in a hurry. I needed to figure a way out of this mess. The clothing that she had picked out weren’t half bad. It was a pair of black skinny jeans, an Atrau shirt and a jack the pumpkin king hoodie. For some reason I had always like jack the pumpkin king. The other angels said it was because I had never been able to let my human self go, but I figured at least I had a personality unlike some people up there. I zipped up my hoodie and ran after her. I found her waiting at a reservoir just upstream. Her pouty lips were pursed and her hand was on her hip. I rolled my eyes and groaned when I took in the rest of her. She was in a white button down short sleeved shirt tailored to fit to her every curve and one of those really short plaid miniskirts that you are used to seeing naughty school girls in. She really wasn’t going to make any of this easy for me, was she? “What is the hold up, Kalona?” she asked with an all too innocent look on her face. I forcefully pulled my eyes away from the short hem of that god forsaken skirt and looked at her eyes. “You are kidding me right? I’m dead! How in the fuck am I going to attend school?” I asked her in an aggravated tone. “It’s called get your ass in the van and colt is driving us.” She replied snidely. I gritted my teeth and she began again. “Unlike you “angels”, she double quoted the word like it wasn’t true, “we actually try to be normal seventeen year olds. This is exactly what you are now so hurry the hell up!” A mass of blonde hair popped out of the back seat window. My breath caught. The mass of blonde hair was a beautiful girl. My heart skipped a few beats when I looked at her eyes. They were the most brilliant shade of blue I had ever seen. Her skin was pale and iridescent, her cheekbones high and proud, and her lips that, despite being twisted into a half smile, were undoubtedly perfectly pouty. Her hair looked smooth and was the color of honey exactly and the modest clothes she wore just made her look like a complete angel. And then she spoke to me. “You had better hurry, Kalona. I really want you to sit next to me.” She said in a sing-song voice that melted every wall I had up to protect myself. I knew who she was, even without her telling me. She was Serenity, my old dead charge. She smiled at me and a glint of something sharp and white caught my eye. It was a fang. My eyes widened and I ran to her and yanked the car door open. She looked a little startled but she gave me a warm friendly smile that I always adored. “I take it you saw my new, uh…”she said shyly but was unable to summon the word for it. I knew what she meant so it really didn’t matter to me. I felt a warm trickle fall down my face. I realized I was crying and quickly wiped the tears away so she wouldn’t see them. She scooted forward on the seat and gently lifted my chin so she could look into my eyes. You don’t have to worry about hiding your tears serenite (means true and uncorrupt angels). They only make you lovelier. This is the real you that I never got to see whilst living. A side that is both vulnerable and loving. And a side that even as a vampire, I will always love.” She chided softly and kissed me lightly on the cheek. I was sure that if she wasn’t a vampire she would have undoubtedly blushed a deep scarlet right about now. I had to smile at that. “But how did you-, I mean-“ I began but the words just refused to come out. “Become a vampire?” she finished for me. “Uh, yeah.” I said shyly and rubbed the back of my head. I had only let her see me a handful of times when she was alive but she still knew me so well it was almost uncanny.
“I was found by Damien. When that brick wall hit me and crushed me, he pulled me out once you left and turned me into, well, this. Though I can’t say I wish he hadn’t because I would be lying through my teeth like majorly.” She laughed softly at herself and finished with, “Well? Aren’t you gonna gimme a hug?” a smile spread from ear to ear on my face as I swooped he up in my arms and held her as close as possible. Maybe even a little too close because she whispered softly, “Um, I gotta breathe, Kalona!”Even as she whispered it her voice was strained. I pressed my lips into a thin hard line trying so hard to suppress the laughter that wanted so desperately to escape from my lips. I had done this once before and when I let her go that time she fell square on her ass. So I decided to set her down infinitely gentler this time. That genuine smile I loved so much was on her face again. I heard someone clearing their throat rather obnoxiously loud and groaned. “Coming mother!” I yelled out sarcastically. She growled in response, “Just get in the damned car, idiot!” I knew it was ivory and I flipped her off too. She really deserved it. I mean she was the one who came onto me in the first place. LUCKILY, I gained my common sense back and got away from her. I could never do something that horrible. Especially not now. Not with Serenity here. She was my pride and joy in life and in death. I would never hurt her and I would do anything to protect her. Anything.
I climbed into the back of the Mercedes Benz slowly, just to annoy her. Hey, if she wanted to be a bitch then I would play right back. Colt watched me as I got in. I still didn’t like him. That mess of a beating I gave him last night had healed up fine. It’s a good thing they heal fast otherwise he would have permanent ego damage. Not that I would mind that because I definitely wouldn’t. There was a snicker coming from the other side of Serenity and when I looked over there was a guy I hadn’t yet met. I racked my brain to see if maybe I had and just forgot but that was a big no. “Colt got his ass beat last night!” he busted out laughing. Colt turned around in the driver seat and punched the kid in the stomach. The kid’s eyes grew practically to the size of saucers and he let out a sharp cry of pain. Ivory laughed as he slumped over in pain and Colt smiled in return. They turned around while still laughing and started the car. I saw a glint of something in the kid’s eye when he looked up. It was like someone flipped a switch. The look in his eyes was pure undiluted hatred.
His teeth bared themselves and he lunged forward, seizing Colt by the neck. Screams were coming from both Ivory and Serenity. That’s when things got really weird. You know how in some movies, time freezes and only like two people are left unfrozen? It was exactly like that. I wasn’t frozen and neither was the kid that just lunged at Colt. He pulled back when he noticed the time stopped and relaxed comfortably against the seat. He sighed and turned to look at me. My mouth hung open. I was like what the fuck is going on?!
