It’s been seven months already, after the korankye’s walked down the aisle. The memory was just like yesterday, so fresh and detailed…. Sam could still remember the order of events, the crowd, cheers the songs and that kiss after that long, boring process. As he kept on imagining, his beautiful wife Kathrine whom he usually called Kat, walked in: now Kat was the woman every man dreamed of and will die for…she was intelligent, elegant, smart charming, sexy sassy and for her beauty, it was undoubtable; she was as beautiful as the moon prettier than the sun on a sunny day. Her smile was one that could take breath away. She was always happy and happy people they say are beautiful, Sam never knew how true this was until he met Kat.
The love and romance they shared for the past few months was more than what an average couple will experience in an entire lifetime. Their marriage life was happily sweet. These love birds were the envy of every couple and the dream life of many aspiring (wanna be) couples.
December was just around the corner and the couple had plans for Christmas, they wanted to hold a mega-Christmas party at their house. It had to be perfect as everyone in the town was coming. The mayor, pastors, elderly men and women, children….you name it and they will be there. Everybody wanted to be there! This was the beauty of tamale, just one event and every one will show up. So it wasn’t exceptional this time round. Sam suggested a bigger venue instead of their house to be able to accommodate all the people that would be attending.
The sports stadium was the next available place for such mega gatherings. Kat thought it wise for them to invite the police to provide security to handle the large crowd that was anticipated, I don’t think that is necessary Sam said. While they were still deliberating on this issue Sam had a call from his office; the ship that was given the opportunity to carry Sam korankye’s goods had just docked at the port. He was needed for the clearing process to begin. Sam particularly didn’t like delay when it came to work neither did he like go and come later nor waiting for extra hours after the scheduled time. He believed time was a precious commodity and should be treated as such. Time was money so he utilised every bit of time he had very well apart from time with Kat in the house or in the bed room!
Now Sam was a very rich and influential man. He had assets worth 5billion Ghana cedis.( authors notes: that is a lot of money in this part of the world you know!) No no no, Sam was not born rich infact he struggled to get through school, he understood what it meant to be poor and hungry. Having no one to turn to; sleeping on an empty stomach was a usual thing for him when he was in college. He practically begged his colleagues for money on regular occasions. It wasn’t until he graduated with 1st class that life changed for him. He had sponsorship to further his education in UK; the money that came with the package was what he used to setup a small business. A business that turned into an empire, Sam knew what it meant to start a business from scratch for he had laboured very hard for years on what we now call melcom Ghana limited. Sam’s shop was demolished just two months after he put it up. Reasons, he didn’t have a building permit.
Back to the streets he went, from shop owner to pure water seller. In all these things he was strong in faith not giving up, he moved into yoghurt business as a street vendor. Sam practically lived from hand to mouth. He did well with yoghurt so he was promoted to branch manager he was getting back on track. It was during this time he met kathrine, she will close and then come over to Sam’s work station to help him with the figures Sam wasn’t very good with numbers you know. He learnt how to manage a fully stocked shop from the yoghurt company which was very vital to his future. Within two years Sam setup his own shop; he sold basic house hold provisions, electronics and stationary ware. It’s been only five years he started but look at melcom group of companies now, there is no region in Ghana they don’t have a shop. God had lifted Sam from a “nobody” to a “somebody” an employer as such. This is the man we are talking about
So Sam left as kathrine continued with the party planning. it was difficult planning alone at first but she got used to it. As smart as she was, it was a piece of cake. Kat put on the TV and it was showing a kids programme. This programme left her speechless which only left her in a state of despair; she was thinking of her own future seven good months and she hadn’t picked seed yet.
December finally came and the Christmas party was the talk of town. People couldn’t wait anymore for that 26th day to come; it looked near but very far. Gradually like a chameleon boxing day came, the day on which hearts are either broken or made whole; day friendship ties are either strengthened or weakened; the day where husbands either say “thank God for such a wonderful woman “or “why did I marry this woman in the first place”; a day couples say” I bless the day I found you” or “I curse the very day I met you”. Wow so many words for one day! That just tells you how special this day really is………………………………….. Sam said. As I walked around the venue, I noticed something strange; the scenery was uncommon. It was like God Himself had come down from heaven to mould this very day. The clearest weather I have ever seen; with cool breeze, fresh and clean air...oh my God! And it feels good. During this season the sun scorches but not today; it seems to have travelled to the underworld for some hours now.
“Paw- pau- paa” the fire crackers went, I nearly run but stopped when I realised it was just fire crackers.
