The Doll's Legacy



The afternoon faded into amber tones over the quiet town of Saintpotden when Friedrich received the package. A rectangular box, wrapped in worn brown paper and sealed with a red wax stamp, rested on his weathered oak table.



"What could this be?" murmured Friedrich, examining the peculiar package. The label, handwritten in faded ink, barely revealed the sender.



With eager curiosity, he broke the seal and released the contents. Inside, wrapped in layers of weathered tissue paper, lay a porcelain doll. Its golden hair was carefully braided, its ancient dress adorned with lace weathered by time.



Furrowing his brow, Friedrich was puzzled by the unexpected gift. He didn't recall ordering such a thing, but something about the doll intrigued and unsettled him. Its blue eyes seemed to watch him with an eerie, almost human-like, life.



As night fell, he placed the doll on a shelf in the main hall of his home, by the fireplace. His wife, Brigitta, observed it with a mix of fascination and unease.



"It's beautiful, but... there's something about it, Friedrich. Don't you feel something strange?" she murmured, staring into the doll's crystalline eyes.



Friedrich merely smiled, trying to dismiss his wife's concerns. However, as the night progressed, a sense of unease crept over him. Occasionally, he'd swear the porcelain eyes followed his movements, the smile on the inert lips subtly transforming.



The whispers of the wind outside seemed to form unintelligible words that hung in the air, accompanied by a faint tinkling from the doll.



Every time Friedrich distanced himself, he had the feeling the doll had changed its position, although no one had touched it. A disquieting restlessness gripped the house as the clock ticked through the nighttime hours.



The first signs of unsettling behavior from the doll arose, and Friedrich began to wonder if accepting the gift had been a terrible mistake.
