Dragon Tales
By J. V. Lisa
Dragons, I’d always dreamed of dragons and always found their stories so amazing. Huge, majestic and, magical creatures that could either be one of the fiercest creatures you will ever see in your life, or a rather gentle beast that guards the words secrets. Most people would say that the myth of dragons is simply that, a myth, just some crazy writer’s imagination running wild. But I’ve always wondered. I mean even if they are truly and purely myth, the idea had to start somewhere, right? Even so, I’ve often lain awake at night daydreaming about these magnificent creatures. Picturing all the secrets they protect and maybe even riding on its back while it flew through air. If I had one wish, just one selfish wish, it would be to fly with a dragon. Little did I know I would get my wish plus more than I could ever fathom. Everything started the day my grandmother passed on.
My grandmother on my mom’s side had been my best friend and, unlike my mother, shared my love for dragons. My mother was her only child so we inherited everything from her. My mother mainly claimed her money and estate, but left my father, brother and, I to sort through all her other odds and ends. She used to live within walking distance. I would visit her often and she would tell me stories on a place called Dragon Realm. She told me that she actually lived there when she was young. It was a place that dragons lived and roamed freely, she had even had the honor of riding one herself. She told me of a necklace she had, a beautiful sapphire blue dragon scale. “It holds magic” she would tell me, and if anything ever happened to her she wanted me to have it. The only catch was that I had to pass some kind of test first. I always asked her what the test was and how I could get the scale. She never told me.
Anyway back to the present. I should probably tell you a little about myself. My name is LyIla Lynn, I’m 19 with long light blonde hair and dark blue eyes. I live in a small town called Blue Rock, New Mexico. It used to be an old mining town in the 20’s, but when the mine caved in it went out of business. But a couple decades later the town was rebuilt and populated. My grandparents lived here as well as my parents and now my brother and I. When my brother and I were younger we would sometimes visit the mine and see what we can find. We usually came back empty handed but I always loved the adventure. Sorry I guess I’m rambling a bit. Let’s see where was I? Oh, right the day my grandmother died.
My brother and I went to her house under my mother’s orders.
“Go and get anything you want to keep.” She said. So we set out for her house. I desperately wanted to find the dragon scale. We arrived at her house and split up. I went straight up the stairs to her bedroom, which was actually a bit of a mistake on my part. I quietly opened the door and crept inside. Her room was exactly the same. I kept thinking she had just stepped out for a bit and would be back soon, but she wasn’t coming back. That thought sent a pang through my heart that I was becoming all too familiar with. Sitting on her bed I picked up one of her pillows and buried my face in it as I hugged it inhaling deeply. The pillow still had her scent in it. Jasmine and rose danced around my nose, along with hints of her arthritis cream. I laid the pillow in my lap smoothing out the wrinkles and trying to dry the water that had fallen from my eyes. My fingers traced across a raised shape. Inspecting the pillow closer I didn’t see anything until I started to look away again. There was what seemed to be a shift in the shape that brought my attentions back to it. At first I thought that the light was playing tricks on my glasses. I reached to take them off but all I got was air. I remembered that I had recently gotten contact. Feeling a bit blonde I looked at the bump again. I still couldn’t see it but I could feel it. Moving it back and forth, an image kept appearing and disappearing. It reminded me of one of those 3-D holographic images. I slipped my hand under the pillowcase and found something hard and round. It came loose from the fabric and fell into my palm. I slid my hand out and inspected the small sphere
