In the air Sreesanth takes it. India win. Unbelievable scenes here at the bull-ring. Geoff Lawson can't believe it, the Pakistan players stunned and India would believe they have got out of a corner. Misbah-ul-Haq does not want to leave the field but what a match for a 20-20 final! India the world champions'', said Ravi Shastri on air.
The players cheered, the crowd cheered, and the sight of MS Dhoni holding the trophy is one, none of us have forgotten.
Tell me honestly, how many times have you played then replayed, then again replayed the immortal words of Ravi Shastri on that historic evening of 24th September 2007? Tell me how many times have you had a heart-in-a-mouth moment every time you watch Misbah ul-Haq scoop Joginder Sharma over short fine-leg, in spite of it being a highlight?
“A Goal is a dream with a deadline” – Napolean Hill
For the Indian Team the Goal was to win the first ever T20 world cup in South Africa.
Goal setting is everywhere in our world. We set goals for our careers, our health, and our lives in general. It seems modern society is always encouraging us to think about the next milestone. However, what we don't think about enough is the science and strategy of how to accomplish our goals.
Many people set lofty goals but underestimate the amount of action or mindset shift required to achieve that success. This is the reason we often fall short of our goals. You'll understand this if you've happily set New Year Resolution on New Year’s Day. After a month we hardly remember the resolution, we tend to make new year resolution just because people ask us if we have made any. You need to have lofty, extraordinary goals, and you must put in the right amount of effort to make them a reality.
Any target attacked with the right actions in the right amounts with persistence is attainable.
Having a goal is the easy part. The real challenge is not determining if you want the result, but if you are willing to accept the sacrifices required to achieve your goal. Do you want the lifestyle that comes with your quest? Do you want the boring and ugly process that comes before the exciting and glamorous outcome?
It's easy to sit around and think what we could do or what we'd like to do. It is an entirely different thing to accept the tradeoffs that come with our goals. Everybody wants a gold medal. Few people want to train like an Olympian.
This brings us to our first key insight. Goal setting is not only about choosing the rewards you want to enjoy, but also the costs you are willing to pay.
Once your Goals are set you need to build a system around it in order to ensure you achieve that goal. Goal without a system are impossible to achieve. Goals are useful for setting the direction. Systems are great for actually making progress. In fact, the primary benefit of having a goal is that it tells you what sort of system you need to put in place. However, the system itself is what actually achieved the results.
This brings us to our second key insight. Goals determine your direction. Systems determine your progress. For instance, losing twenty pounds is a goal, but eating right is a system. In the same vein, making a million dollars is a goal, but being a well-disciplined serial entrepreneur is a system.
If you take a close look at the lives of successful people all over the world, you will discover most of them follow systems built around goals. Have an honest talk with any of the high achievers out there, ask some probing questions about how they got where they did. You’ll find a system at the bottom of it all, and usually some extraordinary luck.
For instance, Warren Buffett’s system for investing involves buying undervalued companies and holding them for a long time, or at least until something major changes. That system has been a winner for decades. Compare that with individual investors who buy a stock because they expect it to go up 20 % next year; that’s a goal, not a system. And unsurprisingly, individual investors usually experience worse returns than the market average.
Goal Competition
Goal competition says that one of the greatest barriers to achieving your goals is the other goals you have. In other words, your goals are competing with one another for your time and attention. Whenever you chase a new goal, you have to pull focus and energy from your other pursuits. This is basically The Four Burners Theory in action. When you turn one burner up, you have to turn others down.
Now, there is good news. One of the fastest ways to make progress on your goals is to simply press pause on less important things and focus on one goal at a time. Sometimes you just need to reorganize your priorities a little bit and suddenly progress comes much more quickly because you are now fully committed to a goal that was only getting moderate attention previously.
This is an important insight. Typically, when we fail to reach our goals, we think something was wrong with our goal or our approach. Experts tell us, “You need to think bigger! Pick a dream that is so big it will motivate you every day.” Or we tell ourselves, “If only I had more hours in the day!”
These excuses cloud the bigger issue. What often looks like a problem of goal setting is actually a problem of goal selection. What we really need is not just need bigger goals, but better focus. You need to choose one thing and ruthlessly eliminate everything else.
THINK BIG
Don't be afraid to think big, because when you begin limiting the amount of success you desire, you start to cut down on the amount of action needed, and this will make success far from you.
“Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve” – Napolean Hill
Many people have heard that they're truly unlimited — that limitations exist only in the mind, yet they still settle for average (or “realistic”) goals. The structure of society makes us believe some things are realistic, while others aren't. This is simply not true.
For the extraordinary person, there's no such thing as unrealistic goals — there only exist goals that require massive amounts of action compared to others. Don't be afraid to set big goals, because only such goals can bring happiness and fulfillment in your life. There's an exciting sense of accomplishment you feel when you do things normal people consider impossible.
You get a chance to prove to them that impossibility only exists the mind. In the stone age, for example, wouldn't it be considered crazy to think you can sit in one place and have a chat with someone 250KM away? But how possible is that in the 21st century? If no one ever set a goal to make communication better for humanity, it would never have happened. Check the lives of the test inventors and business people, and you'll find one thing in common: they had big goals.
Set SMART Goals
Goals should be: Specific.Measurable.Attainable.Relevant.Time Bound.
Set Specific Goals: Your goal must be clear and well defined. Vague or generalized goals are unhelpful because they don't provide sufficient direction. Remember, you need goals to show you the way. Make it as easy as you can to get where you want to go by defining precisely where you want to end up.
Set Measurable Goals: Include precise amounts, dates, and so on in your goals so you can measure your degree of success. If your goal is simply defined as "To reduce expenses" how will you know when you have been successful? In one month’s, time if you have a 1 percent reduction or in two years' time when you have a 10 percent reduction? Without a way to measure your success you miss out on the celebration that comes with knowing you have actually achieved something.
Set Attainable Goals: Make sure that it's possible to achieve the goals you set. If you set a goal that you have no hope of achieving, you will only demoralize yourself and erode your confidence. By setting realistic yet challenging goals, you hit the balance you need. These are the types of goals that require you to "raise the bar" and they bring the greatest personal satisfaction.
Set Relevant Goals: Goals should be relevant to the direction you want your life and career to take. By keeping goals aligned with this, you'll develop the focus you need to get ahead and do what you want. Set widely scattered and inconsistent goals, and you'll fritter your time – and your life – away.
Set Time-Bound Goals: Your goals must have a deadline. Again, this means that you know when you can celebrate success. When you are working on a deadline, your sense of urgency increases and achievement will come that much quicker.
Set Small Goals: The Indian Team had set off to South Africa to play the world cup without any coach. Their Goal was simple to win the world Cup, they broke it down to each game and set small goals on just focusing one game at a time.
Clarity
Clarity is what keeps you fulfilled through the long journey to success even when times get rough. It is developed by doing constant research to find out what is best for you. It takes careful thought and is a major determinant of your self-esteem. How you feel is strongly related to how well you know yourself, and this is an important factor for success.
Having a goal that is both unambiguous and challenging is a good way to ensure follow through and improve willpower not only for the present, but for the future. You need a big picture, something that keeps you going everyday. This makes you an even more focused person.
Clarity can be improved by concentrating on these 4 areas:
Self: If you want to be a high performer, it is not enough to just know yourself and what you are capable of. You need to grow yourself by showing up every time as the person you want to be. Think positively of yourself and stay actively committed to helping yourself grow. Assess yourself and ensure your focus is in the right direction.
Social: The other people around you also matter, and how you treat them determines the quality of your relationships. Be intentional with how you relate and build relationships.
Skills: You should take time to understand the relevant skills you need to develop because you can't afford to leave your growth to chance.
Service: The visible difference your actions make in the world is inspiration enough to continue to do more. The stronger your connection to others, the stronger you are.
Clarity over goals and objectives is one of the most important concepts in personal productivity. When you set clear goals and know exactly the things you need to do to achieve them, you will find yourself working faster and getting more done. One of the biggest reasons people procrastinate is ambiguity and confusion about what they want to do.
The more clarity you have the more powerful your goals are.
PLAN
A Goal without a plan is just a wish.
Twenty20 cricket had started back in 2003 and by 2007 every country had its domestic tournament except India. The BCCI, as usual, was reluctant towards the newest format and had even protested against staging the inaugural World Twenty 20 (Imagine, if
