What if our reflections are there to stop us from crossing over?
...What if they are there to protect us?
Have you ever noticed that sometimes, your reflection seems just a little behind. Like, a fraction of a second's delay. Not enough to be anything more than a trick of the light, but enough for you to pause and feel unease spread through your body, before you laugh it off. Science tells us that our brain is just a little too slow at processing visual changes, which our eyes pick up too quickly for it to follow. Seems like a reasonable explanation, right? Sure.
I've never really been superstitious. Scary stories and urban legends make me chuckle and horror films get predictable after you watch enough of them. I was in my teens when I first noticed that delay in my reflection. I walked into the bathroom to brush my teeth and glanced up at the mirror out of habit. Then paused. My reflection momentarily seemed to be just... absent. Gone for a split second, like it had ducked down or not quite got to the silvery glass in time. I blinked and, there it was. I shrugged and carried on with my day.
