The Body

Homicide Detective Robert Mills watched as paramedics remove the broken body of Molly Ringer from the empty well, while her soft voice spoke in his ear.

"Told you I was here, Bobby!"

An ice cold shiver slid down his back at the ghostly words as he put his ear closer to her dry mouth. It was as if he’d expected something else...some other clues to be brought to the surface of her lifeless lips.

“You okay Bobby?" Rick Horne asked his partner of three years, after seeing the stunned expression on his face. " Looks like you've seen a ghost."

Bobby hadn't seen Molly Ringer, his old high school girlfriend in years. Not since she was rumored to have left the city to find fame in Hollywood.  But he certainly heard the fire of her old temper.

" Will you look at me! I'm Gray!"

Even as a ghost, she still cared about her appearance, he thought ironically.

"Yeah, uh where, is the medical examiner?" Bobby had to get a grip. He couldn't let his partner know he heard victim's voices, especially this victim’s voice.

"Bobby, if you want a minute, I understand," Rick whispered, "I know how it is when it is someone close to you."

"Thanks, Rick," the detective replied after spotting a folded piece of paper with blood stains near the victim.

"Think that might be a clue to the killer's Identity Bob," asked Rick as Bobby picked up the piece of paper.

"It sure looks like it," Bobby replied. He placed the bloody piece of paper into a small plastic bag.

Blood Loss

"It’s about time! Look, here’s the medical examiner finally.  Guess they don't think time matters after someone is dead," said Rick. "Sorry Bob, I didn't mean to..."

Bobby just shrugged it off.

“Now what? I don’t think I want that old man poking on me like that?” Molly frowned.

Bobby rolled is eyes. “ Do you know what happened to you?” he whispered.

“No, but…”  Boddy held up his hand to silence her while paying close attention to the doctor.

After the Medical examiner had examined Molly, he looked up and said, "Looks like we have a real mystery here?”

“Really, how so?”

“ The body has been completely drained of blood."

"I wonder if that's some of her blood on that piece of paper you found," Rick replied, turning his attention toward the detective. He’d been talking with the first officer on the scene.

"If it's not, then It may be the killer's blood." Mills respond.

Rick nodded in agreement. "Well, looks like the forensic team's going to have fun figuring it out." He kind of laughed.  Boddy didn’t notice, he wondered why Molly was floating from officer to officer. “You know, I always thought cops were handsome in their uniforms.”

Suspects

"EWWW!” Molly looked over Bobby's shoulder at her exposed body on the examination table while the chief examiner explained to the season Detective what he already knew about her death. "Someone stuck a tube in her post mortem to exsanguinate the body. Look here, see this mark, that's the puncture wound."

"Yes, I already knew that, but is there anything else that I might have missed?”

Molly tried to hit Bobby, but her hand  went straight  through his shoulder. Bobby shuddered when she tried to touch him. He turned to her, frowned. “ I need to tell you something.”

His frown deepened.

“Excuse me doctor.” He turned from the table and left the room.

“Hey, where are you going? I’m not finished.” The medical examiner asked confused.

"Come back here, Bobby; I have something to tell you about my murderer!" she called floating behind the detective.

"I'll be right back Doc! Nature's calling!" He knew if he didn't leave Molly would never stop pestering him.

"What is it, Molly?" he asked once outside the doctor’s hearing. He felt like he belonged in a nut house.

"I know who killed me, but it will be up to you to prove it."

"What? I mean who?"

Molly was always a bit of a scattered brain, even without the lost memory that most ghosts have; but his mother always told him that this was a gift. She said. "Trust and follow and allow yourself to be supported and guided."

So, although she’s working his last nerve, he will trust Molly.

"I'm Sorry Bobby, but it was one of the officers in your unit that killed me."

"A cop? Who?"

"I thought you were a clairvoyant," she laughed, vanishing.

Bobby sighed, frustrated.

Perserve

"Bobby I’m on the clock!" The medical examiner popped his head inside the bathroom. " I've got other clients tonight!"

"Yea a dirty cop, I don't know which one, only that he is from your unit and he is sadistic." Molly was fading in and out.

“I’ll be out in a minute.” Bobby thought about Molly's words while he walked into the room to talk to the medical examiner.

He was stunned to see Rick Horne stood over the body. He held  a large folder under his arm and a box in his hands, frowning at the body. "What you got, partner?"

"It's a bloody silver hammer...just like in one of the Beatle's songs. Do we have a Maxwell, working for us in our department?"

Bobby thought for a moment, then quickly nodded. "Yes, we do."

“Quick...see if there is a record on file as to his blood type...maybe we have a match.”

After a search through the data base, the tech looked up from the computer.“Sorry mate, it's her blood. But she did manage to scratch someone or something. I'll have to send this to the lab to see what they can make of it.”

Bobby nodded, disappointed.

“The draining of her blood, I think it's just a red herring. Whoever this murderer is, he’s hoping we go off tracking some crazed vampire-wanna-be.” Rick said.

Bobby looked at Molly’s body again. She was still beautiful, there was no marks on her body other than those caused by her body falling down a well.  Someone had preserved her for weeks before discarding her like trash, why?

“She was preserved!” He yelped. We’re looking for someone that has skills as a Taxidermy.”
