One cold winter night, a Lakotan tribe was sitting around the fire. Soon, the ancestor of a wolf saw the flames dancing in the night, just beyond the borders of his territory. He snuck closer, closer, to the fire to the warmth. Seconds later, he was out of his land. He looked back, hesitant of getting farther away from his territory. His body, cold from the frigid gales of wind sweeping through the forest, disagreed with his mind.
Torn between his choices, he cocked his head, as if thinking and finally agreed with his body. He crawled forward, his belly just brushing the forest floor. He inhaled deeply, closing his eyes, relishing in the smell of cooking buffalo.
In a desperate rush for warmth and food, he dashed towards the bonfire, eyes wide open in panic, for whenever he ran recklessly like that towards food, it ran away! But this time, it didn’t.
A young boy from the tribe looked up, for he had heard something. He tilted his head to one side and stared at the creature he saw standing there.
It was the ancestor.
One of the tribe elders noticed the boy looking away from the fire and followed his gaze to a… a… an elusive Stormdog? He couldn’t believe his eyes.
The ancestor walked forward, fearless now, towards the boy.
The elder gave a yell, and one of the young men grabbed the bow and arrow that he always kept with him. He noosed an arrow and let it fly.
The ancestor just managed to dodge the arrow. Confused, he stared at the young boy, as if to say Why is this happening? He flew back into the forest and only stopped when he was near the hollow tree where he slept in for now.
Then he felt something stir in him. Something that had been hidden from him until now. Then he let it go, releasing the hidden thing. It came in the form of a long, chilling, soulful howl.
Back at the Lakotan camp, the young boy heard something. It was a sad sound, long and loud. “Grandfather,” he said. He pulled on the elder’s leathery sleeve urgently. “Listen, listen Grandfather. Hear the Stormdog.”
The End
