As Embers Dim

You are melody to my harmony and from the music our bodies create
Love is made and spent in a lazy afternoon.

Beginnings filled with the hazy scent of you,
And... insatiable hungers.

You, as usual, linger too long.
Teasing me, we begin again.

We foresee each other's notes and rests,
You tell me, "We balance the pitch of the Universe."

But the outer world cannot hear
The symphony of our declarations and
Our individual universes crumble.

Now, there are no more songs created with you,
Only the echoes of concerts, half remembered, that bring me tears.

Agonized by silences composing new aches for you,
And when you walk through the door...?
You pass me like a spectre - toneless and unreal.

Why is my hunger for our duet never quenched,
Yet you seem never to have known me?
Unaware of the taut and trembling strings
That atrophy without your touch.

Can we not still balance the universe?

Love has tricked me again, changing keys
True to its intrinsically sadistic discordance,
Allowing me to entwine the lyric of my soul
With one whose resonance has withered.

The only way to ever experience the crescendo –
That purest fire of your lover's soul -
Is to understand the music will fade
And to bear the torture of fire slowly dwindling down
To dim silent embers.
