Prologue - Creation of Worlds

Nothing is as it should be when we interfere with the events of our lives. It is in the nature of reality, getting involved. We must opt, so that we can live. However, every choice we ever make shape the course of existence. The existence in which we are fated to cease to exist, eventually. Yet, one must often wonder what life would be if our choices weren’t ours. Or, simply, are our choices really ours? Most of them are. The rest aren’t. Every detached choice we make creates a whole new world. Briefly, the multiverse is created by us. And we, a bunch of idiots, cannot even be sure of its existence.

Now, the multiverse is colliding. Only one of them is destined to survive. And unfortunately, not all worlds are filled with humans. Some include deadly creatures.

Untimely Death

They thought I didn’t know. But I did. I was the birthday boy, after all. I knew my dormmates wanted to surprise me to make me happy but I knew anyway. Still, I was going to pretend to be shocked or whatever.

I was a college student who studied English Literature. I was dwelling in the dormitory of the campus. It wasn’t what I expected in the first place but I was trying to make do. I had two other people in the room I was: John and Jonah. They were twins. Both had brown hair and hazel eyes, with a sharp jawline. As even their hair looked the same, the only way I could pick them out was their beard. John had none. Jonah, on the other hand, was trying, at least.

I’d never grown a beard, either. Hated it. Still do.

There was another person I knew that was staying in the dormitory but she was in the second building, which was used by females. Her name was Lee. She had short black hair with three earrings on each ear, which kind of made her look attractive.

Jonah was the only one of us who knew how the females’ building looked like. If given a chance, he could draw a map of it. Lee, like Jonah, knew all about the males’ building. Finally, John and I were trying to live on our own. We had so much in common: The series and movies we loved, the books we had read and wanted to read as soon as possible, etcetera. We were quite similar.

And it was my twentieth birthday. I was going to celebrate my life of two-decades. The first of August was the day I had been born on. But the celebration planned by my friends was to take place in twenty-fourth of September, as it was the first day that our gang was gathered, due to school. All of them called or texted to wish me a happy birthday two months ago on the exact day. But they wanted to celebrate it. They must’ve known how lonely I had felt that day.

It was Monday morning, which means we were quite nervous. No one likes a Monday, do they? I was told to wear my black shirt with my black pants, and they knew I only wore them when there was something to celebrate. As I knew that there wasn’t anything to be happy about, I thought it was my birthday.

I was right.

I entered my room and it was all dark. It felt like not a single soul was there. If listened carefully, I could hear my own heartbeat. Then I turned on the lights. John appeared from nowhere and said: “Hey, who turned on the lights?” I couldn’t help laughing, because it was a direct reference to my, and his, favourite TV series, Doctor Who.

Then everyone showed themselves. They sang the birthday song. “Happy birthday, Daniel!” I can’t lie, I had tears in my eyes. Knowing that you’re loved and cared about is common. Feeling it is something else. But I felt it the moment they were visible to my eyes. There weren’t many people, as it was only a dormitory room, yet it was enough to make me cry. John and Jonah were there. Surprisingly, Bruce and Gus were there. You don’t know about them yet. And last but not the least, Lee was there. I bet she was a stowaway. There was no way she was allowed to be in a room in the male’s building to celebrate a birthday.

But she wasn’t alone.

She came with Gabriella, Mila and Agatha. These five names that you don’t know yet didn’t dwell in the dormitory. Every one of them except Bruce had a home. Bruce, sadly, was in a military officer’s club. His father was a sergeant major, so he was allowed to dwell in there. It wasn’t much different from a hotel.

As for the three girls, they were flatmates. And Gus was living on his own.

“You didn’t have to do such a thing,” I said while trying to get rid of the tears on my cheek. “If we get caught, we’re doomed.”

“Shut up, Dan,” Jonah said with a glass of stowaway-whiskey on his hand. “Enjoy the celebration.”

“No, brother,” John interrupted. “He doesn’t enjoy it. He enjoys the silence.”

It was another reference to something we both loved: The new-wave band Depeche Mode.

Lee came near us. “If you’re going to be anxious, which will fuck the night up both for you and for us,” she said, with her voice cracking which gave away the fact that she’d been already drinking before the party even started. “Let’s go out and have fun.”

Everyone agreed.

We found ourselves outside the campus, in a bar. We had our drinks, and some of us were already becoming wasted. Of course I’m talking about Jonah and Lee. They were already snogging. Gabriella and Agatha were snogging, too. I might’ve forgotten to mention but Jonah and Lee, and Gabriella and Agatha were lovers.

Then I saw Bruce staring at a boy with brown hair. And by staring, I mean he seemed to want to talk to him. It must’ve been the boy he said he’d fallen in love last semester.

Mila, John, Gus and I were the remaining personas. Mila was living in a home with two other people who constantly complimented and kissed each other. It was understandable that she didn’t want to spend the night with them. Instead, she was with the birthday boy and his best friends. “Look at them,” she said, showing us Jonah and Lee. “They’re consuming one another.”

“I’m not saying this because he’s my brother,” John replied, moving his eyes from the snogging lovers to us. “But he’s awkwardly good at having it off.”

“What about you?” she asked with curiosity showing in voice.

After glancing at me for a millisecond, he turned to Mila and answered her question with a question: “Me?” Everyone knew John was interested in Mila. I bet Mila was the only one who didn’t know. Still, I was sure that she wanted to have it off with him, too. “Nah.”

“I’m bored,” Gus said and you could
