My immortal
Everyone dies, but the problem is . . . . . . I came back

Chapter 1
“Annie, stop slouching” said my mother grumpily. Silently I sat up straighter. My corset was pulled in so tight I could barely breathe. “And what are you wearing?” she asked with distaste. I tuned her out. My mother was a very strict woman who wanted to act proper, eat proper, talk proper, and wear proper clothes. She was obsessed with how she looked in societies view so she frequently had parties. And now that I’m 17 she is adamant I should get married as soon as possible. And so we were going to visit a wealthy friend of the family with a man of about 25, who was not really known as a nice man.
I peeked out of the carriage window. I couldn’t see much because of the night but of what I could see, it was just dense forest. And then there was a bump and a yell, like we’d hit something. I could hear the driver saying something. We climbed out quickly and my father rushed over to the driver and a man lying on the ground. “He just came out of no where” said the driver. I covered my mouth with my hand. But then the man jumped up. His face looked scary, his eyes bright and teeth shining in the moonlight, he jumped up and sunk his teeth into the driver. I screamed and froze as my dad tried to run to me but then the man was on him too. “No, Dad!” I yelled running forward. “Annie run!” he yelled. And I turned to mom just as another one appeared out of the woods and was on her, it’s teeth in her neck. I screamed wildly, yelling for help. I tried to run but I felt a sharp pain in my neck and then slowly I lost consciousness.
I felt like I was floating in darkness. I could faintly hear someone speaking. He had a rich deep voice. “Well they were tasty” he said. The other one laughed. I could slightly hear his footsteps. I wasn’t scared anymore. I was too shocked, I knew I was going to die and now I was longing for it. I was in so much pain. I felt a foot nudge me and I groaned.
“Hey, Marcus this one’s alive” said the deep voiced one. “Such a pretty little thing. Kind of a waste don’t you think?” he said pointedly. And then he knelt over me. HE pressed his wrist to my mouth and a warm liquid slid down my throat. I groaned and then started sucking it in, it was delicious.
The man laughed and when he pulled his arm away he grabbed my head in his hands, almost gently and then snapped my neck. I had one moment of intense pain and light before it was completely swallowed by darkness.
---------------------------
I woke up on a small bed and looked around disoriented. I was in a small cabin . . . and though I could tell it was morning somehow, all the blinds were drawn and heavily curtained making it very dim. And then I remembered. I screamed as images of last night came flashing into my mind. My mom and dad lying lifeless on the ground. Strange men. And then one of the men was there, moving so fast that I fell back against the wall in shock.
I noticed my whole head hurt and my gums were aching like a new tooth was coming in. “Don’t worry, I’m not going to hurt you” he said in his deep, lulling voice. “What’s your name little one?” he asked. “Annie Lohks” I said warily. He was very pale and handsome with dark eyes and chocolate hair. I just sat there in shock. Finally taking in that my family was dead. Tears came to my eyes, “You, you killed them!” I yelled brokenly. “And you” he said. I froze, I remembered that too. “I’m dead?” I asked. “You are one of us now” he said. One of us? What on earth could he mean? I wondered. “And what is that?” I asked. “A vampire” he said.
It didn’t take long to convince me. I remembered last night. And when I moved the blind my hand burned, I pulled it back quickly. It hurt but to my surprise it healed quickly. My appearance was also changing. My skin had always been fair, but now it was as pale and perfect as a sheet, making my dark hair look even darker.
The day after I had woken up my fangs slid through my gums for the first time. That had been the pain in my mouth, they explained. Also I was incredibly hungry, but they explained that I wasn’t hungry for food. I wanted blood. They said we would go out for a snack that night. I didn’t want to. But they told me I would die without blood.
“I don’t want to kill anyone” I said. They just laughed at me. My strength and speed had also increased. I accidentally punched a hole through the wall just trying to lightly smack it.
That night we left. I was still wearing the same dress as a few days ago. It was red and satiny and not good for running so I took it off. I was just wearing the light white dress, under it. They gave me a black over coat to put over it. I hated them, but I needed them to survive, for now anyway. Because I had no idea what was happening to me. And I had no where to go.
We went into town. “Can we just drink and not kill them” I said. “You could try” said Marcus, the dark handsome one, doubtfully. I was nervous and shaky, fighting the urge to bite into every human neck I saw. And soon I couldn’t think. I couldn’t remember why I shouldn’t tear into them and drink them dry. “You just have to wait a little longer” said Marcus. “But I want them” I said starting forward, my eyes burning. Smiling, they each grabbed one of my arms. They lead me to an alley where two homeless people were sitting and then they let go of me and my fangs shot from my gums and I moved fast as a bullet and I was biting into the greasy old man’s neck.
I sucked it in and rolled it around my tongue, I groaned. And I couldn’t stop, even when my mind was my own again. My will had gone. And the man’s screams turned to gurgles. “Please” he said quietly and his words broke me from my spell, but it was too late. I heard his heart beat echoing in my ears. It slowed and then stopped. The silence in my ears was deafening. I dropped the man from my arms and to the ground, lifeless.
I was horrified at what I’d done, and my white dress was covered in crimson as were my hands and face. I was a monster. “Well I guess she liked it” said Josef, his blonde hair shining in the moonlight, to Marcus who was watching me with interest and maybe even sadness.
Josef was holding the other homeless person which was a middle aged woman who was struggling in his grip. She was looking at me in fright. “Please” she said, “please.” I was frozen. And then Josef bit down. The woman’s screams still haunt me. I closed my eyes and shrunk to the ground. I had never felt so alone in the world than right then. I have to leave these people, I thought anxiously. I stood up, trying to wipe the drying blood off me. And then I ran and jumped right over Marcus who was standing in the mouth of the alley. I landed in a crouch and then turned to run, with blurring speed. “You’ll never make it on your own, Annie!” yelled Josef after me. But I didn’t turn back, only stopping to get my red dress, though I don’t know why, and I haven’t seen them since. Though sometimes I think I can feel someone watching me from the shadows.
I slept on the streets a lot after that, feeding on the blood of small animals and to be honest some homeless people too, but I didn’t kill again. I eventually got a job washing dishes at a household where I lived for a few years before it got suspicious that I wasn’t aging. I kept doing odd jobs and saving all the money I got and after a couple years I got used to my situation.
I read many books and learned many different things over the years. Spanish, French, sword fighting, art, and how to fight. All the things I’d wanted to learn before but was not allowed. But as the years went by, society changed. Girls were given rights and were allowed to do more and more.
I think I was meant more for this century then the one I was born in. Maybe it was fate. But death still haunts me. The monster inside of me may be sleeping but it isn’t gone. And it’s barely satiated by the animal it is forced to live on. I will have lived as a vampire for a whole century in just a month. It is now the year 2011, a very different time then where I was born.

Chapter 2
I change schools every couple of years to stay inconspicuous. Some times I don’t go to school for a while. Its not like its needed, I know everything they have to teach and more. I just came back to New York, New York. I’d lived here back in the 70’s and I’d loved it. In all the places I’d lived, which was a lot, New York was my favorite.
When I reached my old building I sighed as the door was opened for me, and pulled my old key out from my pocket. It was an old building, but still beautiful. And some parts of it had been remodeled, but it still had the huge chandelier in the main hall. I went to the second level on the elevator with my two suitcases, and to my apartment, 211. The key was slightly rusted but it still worked.
The whole apartment was very retro, with white carpet and an orange couch with an old TV. I had a closet full of bright shirts, shorts, and skirts. And of course lots of scarves. I admired how much they differed from recent clothing. Now everything was short and tight, and for guys baggy and falling off. Of course I had recent clothes too. Suitcases full. And my collection of perfumes and make ups I’d gotten over the years. I even had my old red dress from that fateful day. I don’t know why I kept it but . . . . I guess its my only reminder to life, to my human life.
I looked around again. This place really needed to be remodeled. I’d call someone tomorrow. And I’d have to put away the pictures. They were all pictures of me in the 70’s with friends and of course saw they might find it peculiar that I was even alive in the 70’s much less the same age. I gathered them and them put them in a box with all my other pictures. I love pictures, capturing special moments forever. And that’s all I have because nothing ever lasts. I have bunches of pictures from all different times in my life.
I also needed a few things like soap and maybe some paint for the walls. So I grabbed my black jacket and a red scarf. I looked in the mirror. I was pretty good looking, beautiful even, skinny and slight with long dark curls, pale skin, and blue eyes. Then I grabbed my purse and headed out the door.
I bumped into a guy in the hallway. “Oh, sorry” I said smiling. “No, it was my fault” he said his eyes widening, as he took me in. “Um, I’m David” he said holding out his hand. “Annie” I said shaking it. “I just moved here, apartment 211” I said. He raised his eyebrows. “What?” I asked. “Well it’s nothing but apparently someone owned it since like the 80’s and no one’s been in there since. I’ve lived here my whole life and never seen anyone come there” he said. “Oh, it’s my grandma’s she left it to me” I said. “Oh” he said. “So you’ll be going to Central High then?” he asked. “No, I’m home schooled” I said. “That sucks, well if you need anyone to show you around” he said. “You know I was just going to go search for a grocery store” I said. “Well I’ve got nothing to do” he said, “let me just tell my mom, real quick” he said opening the door to 212.
He walked in, motioning for me to follow. His apartment was nice and quaint. We walked down a short hallway, lined with pictures and into a small, yellow kitchen where a woman with blonde hair and warm brown eyes stood in an apron, cooking. “Hey mom” said David, “This is Annie, she just moved into 211” he said. She smiled at me, “Nice to meet you, Annie” she said. “Is it okay if I show her to the grocery store?” he asked. “Sure, just be back in an hour for dinner” she said. He nodded, “bye” I said.
We walked down into the lobby. “Hey, Darren” David said to the doorman as we walked out. I signaled a cab and we got in. “first and sixty-second” David said. “So where did you move from?” he asked. “Los Angeles. But I’ve lived almost everywhere” I said. “Really? That’s cool” he said. “Yes, but my original home is Maryland” I said honestly. I handed the cabbie some money, and we got out.
We walked in, “So thanks for coming with me. I probably would have gone all over the city” I lied. “Oh, no problem” he said. “So what’s central high like?” I asked. “Oh, you know old teachers, clichés, and boring classes. Your average high school” he said. I rolled my eyes at him. “It’s okay” he said, “so what do you need to get?” he asked.
I got bread, eggs, and milk though I wouldn’t need it, and we headed back to the paints. “My grandma’s apartment is a little too retro for my tastes” I said. So I picked up a ridiculous bright orange and pink. “Which do you think?” I asked holding them up. “Probably something less blinding” he said, laughing, and pretending to shield his eyes. I laughed and then grabbed a deep crimson and dark purple. I also grabbed a couple of paint brushes and a roller. “Are you going to paint it yourself?” he asked. “Yes” I said as I put the things on the conveyer. “I’ll help you” he said. I turned to him, “Really?” “Of course, it’ll be fun” he smiled. “Thanks” I said, and then he noticed my ring.
“That’s an interesting ring” he said pointing to my middle finger. It was a black oval surrounded by small red stones and set in silver. “Family Heirloom” I lied. It had been mine all those years ago and now it was what let me go out in the sunlight. It has to do with a witch, but that is another story.
After I paid, we headed back to the apartments. “Hey you wanna eat dinner with us?” he asked. I almost smirked, “No, thank you, I ate before I left, but feel free to come over to my apartment after you eat” I said. “Yeah, awesome” he said smiling and then heading into his apartment. I smiled to myself as I went into my apartment. I liked David.
Chapter 3
I put away the groceries and then pulled out some wine and mixed some animal blood that I had, into it. I sipped it, It was very good. Not long after, David knocked. I went to the door, glass in hand. “Hey” he said. And then he looked around and laughed. “You weren’t kidding, very retro, but I think I kinda like it” he said, coming in. I smirked, “Yes, new furniture is being delivered tomorrow” I said, “The carpet is being changed as well.” He laughed again and he seemed confused by my glass of wine. I had forgotten there was a legal drinking age. When I was born there had not been.
“So are you parents here?” he asked. I gave him a leering look, “Nope” I said. He smiled nervously. “I live alone” I said. “Really?” he asked curiously. “My father died, and my mother always works. I’m emancipated” I lied, heading into the kitchen. “That’s cool, I wish I had my own apartment” he said, following me. “It is also very lonely” I said slightly sadly. He looked at me curiously.
“You want some?” I asked holding up the wine. “Uh, sure, why not?” he said. I smiled and poured some. I did not add the blood, like mine though. I didn’t think he would like that. He had gone into the living room. He was looking at the record player. I handed him the glass. “Thanks” he said, “there is lots of old music here, good though” he said, “Some of these are priceless.” And then he turned it on. It was Debussy, light and lilting music that reminded me of my human life.
Then David set his glass down, “Wanna dance?” he asked laughing. I laughed as he bowed and then took his hands. We dance a little, mainly just sarcastic movements. And then he switched it to something louder and jumpy. I laughed loudly when he pretended to strum a guitar. We twirled and jumped and laughed. We finished our glasses and I was careful not to mix them up.
David’s cheeks were flushed, “I should probably leave soon” he said reluctantly. I pretended to scowl. “Hey, do you have a girlfriend?” I asked, not afraid to get to the point like most girls would be. He smiled, “no.” “Good, because then I couldn’t do this” I said pulling him towards me and pressing my lips into his.
His lips were warm and soft on mine. He wrapped his arms around me, and I twisted my hands in his hair, my tongue exploring his mouth. I wrapped my right leg around his hip, pulling him closer, and deepening our kiss. After a minute, I pulled away, gasping. He too, was short of breath. “Wow” he said, still holding me. “Where did you come from, Annie?” he whispered. “Another world” I whispered in his ear.
After a minute he said, “I should probably go or my mom may come to investigate.” I sighed but smiled, I had forgotten what it was like to have parents and rules. “Oh and I’ll come over to help paint tomorrow. What time do you want me?” he asked. “Whenever you want to come” I said, “I don’t sleep” I said. He smiled, “I’ll see you tomorrow then” he said turning towards the door. I have him one last quick kiss and then he slipped out the door.
I had been alive so long and wasn’t patient, so I usually started relationships quickly, so I already cared for David, though we had just met. Probably more for him than anyone I had, in a century.
