Preface

THE

Sunclan hunting patrol padded through the forest. All was silent except for the footsteps of the patrol.

Suddenly, Thistlepaw came pounding up with a pigeon in his mouth.
'I got fresh-kill! I got fresh-kill!'
'You really should not have brought him along, Ravenstrike!' Skytail moaned.
'He needs to learn how to hunt.' Ravenstrike said.

All of a sudden, a black cat slowly padded through the brambles.
'EEEP! It's Shadowstar!' Dropping his fresh-kill, Thistlepaw yelped and then ran back to the camp. Shadowstar laughed, taking the fresh-kill.
'So he was the little midget who was hunting on Tornadoclan territory...' He growled. Ravenstrike gasped and growled.
'Go away.' Freespirit yowled.
'No, since little midget Thistlepaw was hunting on OUR territory...' Shadowstar growled.
'He's too little to know!'
'I will bring it up at the next gathering.'
'MOONSTAR WILL DEFEND US!' Skytail was now yelling.
'Well, we wouldn't want to start fighting now, do we? Oh, and thanks for the fresh-kill.' Shadowstar growled and pounded off.

Meanwhile, at Sunclan camp, Thistlepaw had already got back, panting.
'What is up?' Moonstar asked.
'Shadowstar...found...us.....and...and... I don't know what he's done... to.. the others...and...'
'He hunted on Tornadoclan territory,' Skytail and the hunting patrol (Ravenstrike and Freespirit) was back, 'and Shadowstar took the fresh-kill he caught. He said he will bring it up at the next gathering.'
Moonstar growled. The others went to rest for the night.
Starclan is watching over us

... Moonstar thought, no matter what happens

Chapter 1

MOONSTAR

woke up the next morning. She felt quite tired... but she wasn't in her den. She was at Fourtrees.
What's going on...

she thought.
Suddently, with a flash of light, someone from Starclan pounced down from the sky. Moonstar recognised the patterns on the fur, the scar on the eye. It was...
'Suddenstar?'
'Yes... the old clan leader. You were an, indeed, excellent deputy.'
'But why are you here?'
'A prophecy has been foretold...'
Suddenly, Moonstar felt weary. She shut her eyes... and then opened them again. Moonstar and Suddenstar weren't at Fourtrees. They were in the future forest... trees black after a fire, Tornadoclan living in SUNCLAN territory, and crow-food over dead Sunclan, Waterclan and Breezeclan warriors...
'No! This can't be happening!' Moonstar cried.
But, there was more to the prophecy. Suddenly, blood came oozing from the dead warriors, towards Tornadoclan. They fainted, and the future forest faded away.
'Tornado will kill water, sun and breeze. Only moon can save the forest.'
'Me, Suddenstar?'
Suddennstar drifted away.
'Suddenstar, come back! I need to know more!'
Moonstar suddenly felt very dizzy. The whole world seemed to be spinning in front of her. She felt the presence of Suddenstar beside her, his warm breath against her head, his fur against her flank.
Tornado will kill water, sun and breeze. Only moon can save the forest...
Only moon can save the forest...
Moonstar.

It's true

, she thought. I can save the forest...

Chapter 2

'MOONSTAR!

Moonstar, get up!'
Something was nudging and mewing at Moonstar. She opened her eyes to see Darkpelt. Slowly, she got up. Moonstar was back in the leader's den. Suddenstar and the future forest was just a dream, so she thought that it might not come.

Just then, Redheart cane into the opening of the den. He signalled with his tail for Darkpelt to leave the den. Obeying Redheart, Darkpelt did what he was asked.
Redheart padded over to Moonstar, which made her remember her dream the previous night. How long had she slept? It looked like sunhigh now, and cats were roaming round.
'You'd better wake up.' Redheart mewed.

'Clan meeting!' Moonstar called a few moments later. The cats surrounded at the top of her rocky den.
'Who can understand prophecies?'
Amberleaf came out of her den.
'I can.'
'What would moon can save the forest

mean?'
Amberleaf paused for a moment.
'Oh, Moonstar! It means that you can save the forest!'
Moonstar looked puzzled.
'How can I save the forest?'
'I don't know!'
