Affiliate Marketing basics

Affiliate marketing is one of the most common ways that many people start building passive income streams & it’s easy to see why this may be the case. Essentially, as an affiliate marketer you’re going to promote the products that other companies are selling and, assuming you do your job correctly, you then pocket a commission each time someone uses the information you provided to actually pull the trigger & buy something. That’s really all there is to it. You simply find a product, discuss what it’s you like about it in a compelling way that others respond to & make sure to give your target audience plenty of opportunities to purchase the product for themselves.

Currently, the affiliate marketing industry does more than $7 billion dollars of business each year. The idea was first used by the owner of one of the internet’s first success stories, Flowers & Gifts. The owner, Will Tobin, got in early on the whole internet thing & by 1995 had more than 2,500 people around the country working to market his website. He was granted a patent on the idea in 1996, the same year that Amazon.com decided to get in on the game by letting users promote their favourite books. This program eventually turned into the Amazon Associates program, the most frequently used affiliate network in the world.

In the affiliate marketing business, there’re two primary factions, the company or individual who is making or distributing the products in question & the affiliate marketer. As such, affiliate marketing is considered a means of spreading the inherent benefits of the creation of products, along with marketing those products as needed. While it doesn’t take much to understand why smaller companies might want to take advantage of the added marketing reach this strategy could provide, it can be difficult for some people to understand why larger companies like Amazon would be willing to share their profits with anyone. In fact, what these companies are betting on is that their affiliate marketers expand the pie in such a way that their traditional marketing efforts might not. As such, while they are giving away a piece of the pie, they are simultaneously ensuring that there is more to go around as well. This is a sound investment as these large companies have already reached all the new customers they can using conventional means, which is why they turn to affiliates to connect with customers who might need a little extra persuasion.

Once you understand the true goal of affiliate marketing, you can then go ahead & start considering the types of websites that tend to be most effective when it comes to getting potential customers to buy products. The answer, of course, is sites that are curated in such a way that they offer reviews of products that users can respect & rely on. Creating this type of website is easier said than done, unfortunately, which means that it requires the proper planning to ensure your site has something to offer users that connects to the larger niche at play, a unique mission, & a specific focus that sets it apart from your competition.

The buying audience that you ultimately end up targeting is going to be a focus of this book time & again as being able to reliably appeal to a specific subsection of the market is the first, & most important, part of successfully getting your affiliate marketing business off the ground. Without these paying customers, you won’t be able to earn a commission & the merchants you’re working with won’t be able to unload their merchandise, so everyone loses. While they are a critical part of the process, the amount they actually understand the affiliate marketing nature of what is occurring is typically left up to the discretion of the affiliate marketer.

The final aspect of the affiliate marketing cycle is what is known as the network. This is the means by which the affiliate marketer & the merchant connect with one another. While connecting with a network isn’t required, it’ll make it far easier for you to start turning a profit, especially at first, if you sign up for one or more from the start. A good network will also help you to expand the scope of products you might be interested in working with in the future.

Means of compensation

There are numerous different compensation models that you can work with inside the general affiliate marketing model, each works differently & offers a different level of earnings potential. Depending on the niche that you ultimately choose, you can easily put several of these to use at the same time. While certain types of compensation models are a natural fit for certain products, it’s important to keep in mind that a large part of ensuring a reliable amount of compensation is choosing products that you can reliably convince others to buy.

PPL (Pay Per Load):

If you sign up to market products via the pay per lead model, then you won’t actually be selling anything directly. Rather, you’ll be working to convince users to provide their details to a specific database that’ll be used to advertise to them at a point & time in the future. Before you sign up for this type of program it’s important you understand exactly what you’ll be asking of people & what the compensation is going to be.

Generally, you can expect between $2 & $20 for each lead that is generated based on the amount of information you get the future customer to provide. This type of affiliate marketing agreement is typically found with service providers of varying types including internet service providers & smartphone companies. This is typically thought of as one of the most difficult affiliates marketing programs due to the internet’s natural distaste for giving up private information. As such, it’s best undertaken by those who’ve already built an online following of individuals who implicitly trust them completely.

PPS (Pay Per Sale):

The most common type of affiliate marketing that you’ll find is what is known as pay per sale affiliate marketing. The biggest PPS client is Amazon who allows its affiliates to market virtually any product & then pays them a percentage of the purchase price is a user clicks on their unique link & then makes a sale. While you won’t receive anything if the user doesn’t complete the sale, these types of commissions can quickly add up.

These types of affiliate deals typically manifest themselves as product review blogs that include a link to the product in question a few times throughout the review. If you’re considering this type of affiliate marketing, it’s important you only review products that you’ve already purchased yourself & that you’d legitimately recommend
