Ballad

There once was a angel
Who lived way up high
Higher than the mountaintops
Higher than the sky

He spent his days and nights
Gazing down below
Yearning for the only place
That he could never go

One day a thought came
Sudden as a lightning bolt
So obvious and so easy
That he stopped staring with a jolt

He'd heard all the stories
Of angels escaping from Heaven
To go down and live on Earth
With their human brethren

So the angel went to Heaven's gate
And ripped them opem wide
Then, risking everything he'd planned
Took one last final look inside

Then he jumped from his perch
Falling through the clouds and air
Smiling, laughing as he dropped
"At last almost there!"

But the stories left out a detail
One of the most important things
It forgot to mention that when you Fall
The Archangels rip out your angel wings

And come they did, the Archangels
Grasping our dreamer by the arm
Pulling and tearing out his wings
The only thing that can do an angel harm

Bleeding, crying, he fell to Earth
And has wondered here ever since
Having found Earth not what he imagined
He spent eternity praying for repentance
