A Woman In Need

I’d like to share a story from a friend.

The other day while going to the local Starbucks a grandmother with her three grandsons saw a woman on the corner with a sign. The sign said, “Plush toys for sale, money needed for diapers, formula, and food.

The youngest grandson, age eight, asked, “Why is she was selling those toys.”

The grandmother replied, “She must have lost her job, and needs money for food and necessities.” This being said while they were on their way to Starbucks for a hot cocoa treat.

The grandmother told the boys,”Remind me to stop and give the woman the last of my cash.

Again the little grandson asked, “Why would you do that?”

She turned with a smile and said, “God told me to.”

A puzzled look came over the little boys face, “I didn’t hear anyone say anything.

She replied with a smile, “ I felt it in my heart . That is how God speaks to me."

“I want to help her too,” he chimed, “but I have no money."

“I will let you give it to her,” she said.

She parked the car. They got out and went into the coffee shop. The older boys had their ear-buds in, and as they walked in, their eyes got very large, seeing all of the goodies at the counter. She explained how she had to be careful with her spending and all they could get was a hot chocolate, from the left over money she made baking cookies. They were satisfied with that, and waited for their order. A woman behind them in line started complaining. Her voice so loud everyone in the store must have heard. “Did you see her out there with her sign? I bet she wants money for drugs.”

The youngest grandson poked his grandma and asked, ”What did she say.”

The grandmother wanted to reply, held back, but finally said to her grandson, “Lets talk in the car.”

They got their orders and went out the door to the car.

“Why did that lady say that, Grandma?”

“I don’t think she is a happy person, and she thinks the worst of people. There are so many people who need help, and if you give from your heart that is all that matters, God will take care of the rest.”

Reaching deep in her purse the grandmother pulled out the remaining cash and gave it to the younger child.

“We will drive up to the corner, and you can give her the money.” Looking over she saw the child smiling.

They drove over and saw a small mountain of plush animals and a few scattered toys. Her grandson opened the back door and handed the woman the cash.

“Which toy would you like?”

The grandmother smiled as her eyes filled with tears, “ Nothing thank you.”

The woman responded with, “God Bless You.”

The child repeated the blessing back to her.

Then the grandmother turned and said, “I always love to hear somebody say that to me. If you boys have a chance to help or do something nice for someone I hope you do it. It can change your whole day.
