A growl escaped from his lips, a shriek escaped from hers. As he slowly lowered his head toward her neck, the more frightened the girl became. Even before his teethe had entered her neck the girl knew she was going to die, she felt it within her heart.
The man felt her fear just as strongly as she felt death creeping along the edges. He slid his tongue along his fangs and felt how dry his tongue was. It had been forever since he had drunken from a single soul.
The girl closed her eyes and did the only thing she could think of to do, she smiled. She whispered a silent prayer; when she was done she felt something move. Something moves within her. A strong power of strength from deep within her.
“At last, I shall drink from a soul as beautiful as yours” the man whispered in her ear. “You are a beautiful girl and I am goi-“ the man broke off, he felt the surge of power from the girl. But the man didn’t have enough time to react.
The girl spun out of the man’s grasp and flew her hand back. Back handing the man in the face; the girl cried out in pain. His face was rock solid.
The man moved as fast as light, grabbing the girls neck and pushing her against another tree.
“The woods” she thought “We are in the woods”
The man stared at her with sharp eyes and leaned into her neck his fangs so close to piercing the skin.
The girl screamed as his fangs ripped into her throat. The girl pushed the man away and with barely enough force to flee.
She fled into the woods not even caring about the gushing blood from her neck.
The man wiped his mouth with the little blood he got to drink; he knew that the thirst wasn’t over. He chuckled to himself as he watched her run into the dark of the woods.
The girl tripped over rocks and brush and twigs. The blood dripped down her neck and hit her shoes as she ran. She had no clue where she was going nor did she care. The only thought running through her mind was getting out of the woods leaving this monster behind.
A hand grabbed her arm from behind and threw the girl into a tree.
The collision hit her head hard; she felt the soft trickle of blood down the back of her neck.
The girls vision blurred as she saw the man lean down in front of her. He put a hand under her chin and turned her face to his. He kissed her hard against the mouth.
The girl moved under the weight of his body pressed against her. She squirmed and tried so hard to pull her face away from his rock hard mouth, fighting to breath.
The man released her from his grasp as the girl gasped in beautiful, sweat air into her lungs.
“You see,” the man said “I don’t need air to live, darling”
“Who are you?” the girl mumbled.
“More like what am I…” he replied.
He kissed the girl again, this time even harder. The girls eyes bulged, wanting to breath in so badly.
The girl kicked the man hard in the leg, but the girl screamed in agony. She had forgotten how stone this man was.
“Cry all u want my dear” he thought “Nobody’s going to here you”
He smiled down at her.
The girl slowly dragged her fragile body up the tree into a standing position.
“Break him,” she thought “break his neck. That’s how you kill these monsters”
The man stepped forward and grabbed the girl by her hair and forced her head to the side. Revealing her neck.
The girl saw the man bend down getting ready to bite. He was so close to the gaping wound in her neck. The girl had to act fast if she wanted to live.
In an instant the girl grabbed the man’s head and twisted his head so far left that she cried out in pain from the loss of blood. The crack of the man’s neck breaking was a horrid sound. The man’s body went rigid and he collapsed to the ground his head bent at an odd angle.
The girl gasped and covered her mouth with her hand to keep herself from screaming. Tears ran down her face. She didn’t know her attacker; she didn’t even remember how she had come to the woods with this monster.
The girl ran as fast as her legs would go. Blood flew behind her. It was getting so hard for her to continue, she couldn’t breathe. She crashed through a break in the woods and hit asphalt.
She was in the middle of a road, car headlights were coming toward her. She waved her hands above her and cried for help. The car slowed down and the women in the front seat rolled down her window. She knew the woman or so the girl thought.
“Erica!? What are you doing out here?”
Erica never could explain, because at that moment, she collapsed in the middle of the road.
Erica moaned, the pounding in her head was getting worse. She opened her eyes to find her aunt staring down at her.
“Erica! Thank goodness that you are awake” she said in a shrilled tone.
Aunt Monty, she was a women but the way her frame looked you could have sworn she was a man but that didn’t affect my love for her. Her old olive, tan skin was darker than usual, her dark grey eyes seemed unnaturally misty and her hair seemed un brushed. She had been worrying her head off about my health.
“Aunt Monty” I managed to mumble through my hoarse throat.
“Oh! No, darling you mustn’t speak…. Your damage to your throat hasn’t healed” she explained
My damaged throat? Oh, yea that night. Everything is all fuzzy in my head; all I remember is this man almost killing me. But no, I killed him; I’m the one to blame. A cry escapes my throat but it comes out muffled, I reach up with a frail hand and feel the neck braise. Great. Just another reason to get picked on at school as if I wasn’t already made fun off enough.
My light pale skin made me look horrible, I couldn’t tan. My frail, brown hair was always stayed the same it never changed. My blue eyes were the only things unique in me. People said that my eyes were more outstanding than most.
I looked down at my skinny body and saw that I was in a hospital bed. Still in the hospital? How long had it been since the attack? It felt as if it was so long ago. It might have been only just days which I’m pretty sure it was.
“Aunt Monty” I managed to make out before I coughed up a lung, “What day is it?”
Aunt Monty looked startled and quickly brushed her hair out of her face and looked at me with worried eyes. “You have been in a coma for a week, Erica” at this she breaks down in tears and sits in the chair next to the hospital bed, weeping.
“Aunt, please calm down, I’m alright… Come on Monty, Look at me, I’m fine” I knew immediately I wasn’t.
Aunt Monty immediately stood up and started screaming in her shrill voice.
“Fine!? You call walking out on the road in the middle of nowhere with your throat almost torn apart and half of your rib cage cracked, and even your head busted open in the back, fine!?”
Her words came as a shock to me. I knew about my throat, but I had no clue about my rib cage and my head. Flashes of the night ran through my mind, me flying through the air and hitting a tree. Grabbing a man by the head and twisting his neck, cracking his spine. I covered my face with my hands and held myself together, for Monty.
“Do you remember anything about that night, Erica?” She said calmly sitting back into her chair.
I did, I know who the monster was, and he was a vampire. The reason why my parents had died, They died because of a venom sucker like the one that attacked me, had attacked my parents. They were innocent! And they died innocent! I knew about vampires for a long time now and I had been trying to find more information about them, which is why I was in an ally at ten o’ clock at night.
“Honestly, Aunt Monty, I don’t remember a thing” I whispered.
I had lied; I couldn’t let Monty know about the things that I had already figured out. I slowly pulled myself up in a sitting position, it hurt. Everything hurt.
A tall, lean man walked in the room, he had dark grey hair and looked about 60 years old. He grabbed a chart and flipped through the pages and scribbled something onto a few pages. When he was done he walked over to my side of the bed and checked on my neck braise.
“Hello, Erica” he said and looked me in the eyes “It’s very nice to know that you are finally awake. Now if I must ask, Do you have any clue what the hell happened?”
I shook my head not wanting to answer the strange man. He nodded and looked at my Aunt.
“Ms. Monty, may I speak to you out in the hall?” he asked her.
Monty stood up and walked out following the doctor.
I laid back down and stared at the ceiling.
I was in the ally and out of nowhere this man came out and said my name. Being me, I turned around, thinking I was brave enough to face danger.
I remember asking the man how he knew my name and he never responded instead he came closer. ---- --- ---
“Erica!” the man had said
I turned and looked at the dark man. “Who are you?” I asked my voice quivering.
The man stepped closer; he was wearing an old Victorian coat and black pants and a nice white shirt.
His dark hair and his nice beautiful eyes were the thing that lured me in.
“Oh relax, Erica” he had said, “I’m only here to talk with you.” He smiled at me and placed his hand in front me, waiting for me to take it.
I started to slide my hand out, but something stopped me. Oh! How I wish I had never taken his hand!
“First, tell me your name…” I had whispered to him.
“My name is Ralph, Erica” he replied with a grin. His hand was still waiting for me to take it. Slowly I grabbed it. In an instant we were flashing through the streets. We were running, fast.
My breath came in short gasps; finally we stopped in a meadow.
“The woods?” I had thought, “We got here so fast…. This couldn’t mean he-“
It was too late, Ralph had already gotten me here, and He was the man who had killed my parents. I turned from the meadow and started to run. I knew that he would soon catch up. Not even soon, he would be there in a second.
He was.
He grabbed me and shoved me up against a tree.
“You are right, my dear Erica, I killed your parents”
--- --- ---
I hadn’t realized I was crying till I had come out of my revere. I turned my head just a little just to see out the window.
“I killed the man, who killed my parents” I thought
It had been 3 weeks since the accident of me. I don’t wear the brace anymore but my throat is still bandaged. Today would be the first day that I go back to school. I awoke to the sound of Monty in my room, yelling at me to wake up.
“Erica! Get your ass up! You are going to school whether you like or not “she shouted at me and then walked out of the room.
I slowly crawled out of bed and pulled on my clothes. I wore my usual jeans and an old shirt. I went to the middle bathroom of our little apartment and brushed my dark brown hair and brushed my teeth. When I was done I grabbed my string backpack and walked into the little half kitchen. Monty sat at the table and sipped her tea.
“Thanks for waking me up in such a nice way, Monty” I said to her, grabbing a cup of coffee off the counter.
“Erica, you have skipped school for 2 weeks, you should have gone back last week and you can’t be late on your first day back” she snapped back at me
“Who says I’m going to be late?”
“Trust me, Erica, I know you, you will always be late no matter how early you get up”
I chuckled at her commentary, scratching at the bandage on my neck I kissed Monty on the top of her head and walked out the door. I walked down the two flights of stairs that led to the little parking lot and walked to my blue, Volex wagon beetle. I opened the door and slumped into the passenger seat and started the engine. Putting my coffee cup in the holder I backed up out of the parking lot.
I went down Paris rode, the easiest way to get to Minnesota’s high school. I sighed as I caught almost every red light, by the time I got to the school and parked my car, Monty was right, I was late.
I walked into the front office where Mrs. Patterson sat typing at the secretary’s desk.
“Why, Erica, It’s so good to have you back” she said to me writing me a pass to first period.
“Thanks” I managed to mumble grabbing the slip out of her hand.
And before she had time to respond I walked out of the front office and walked down the 200 hallway toward my first class. I walked pass all the yellow and green lockers and hit the end of the hallway before I realized that I had already passed my class. I turned around and walked straight into a guy that was standing behind me.
He was sort of tall and had long black hair, his eyes were a golden, light brown color. He was absolutely beautiful and I couldn’t keep my eyes off of him.
“Sorry I… uh.. I…” I managed to mumble
His eyes lit up and his face turned up in a bright smile.
“No,” he said “It’s fine. I actually needed somebody’s help, I’m lost and I need to get to my first period”
“What’s your first period?” I asked him hoping that it wasn’t mine.
“English, with Mr. Sutton”
“Oh! That’s where I’m going” I told him in a sing songy voice.
I didn’t want him to be in my class, there was something about him that makes me feel on edge.
“Great” he told me “Should I follow you?”
I nodded and started heading back down the hallway where I had just come. When we walked in Mr. Sutton gave us both evil looks and told us to sit. Everybody stared at me in the class. I didn’t really have any friends so I knew that a rumor had started. Everybody was whispering about how I was attacked.
--- --- ---
When the bell rand signaling the last class of the day was over, everybody piled into the halls. Immediately I got surrounded by people that I didn’t even know asking all sorts of questions.
“Erica what happened? Are you all right?”
“Oh my gosh I heard that you had your throat almost slashed, is that true?”
“Erica, did you really almost die in the woods?”
I shoved past all these people and ran to my car. Already the tears were coming to my face. I was trying to unlock the door when I felt a presence behind me. I froze for a second and spun around in the next.
The guy who was lost in the hallway was there behind me.
“Can I help you?” I asked him
He smiled again letting his face light up. “No, I was just wondering what your name was?”
I blushed and coughed at the same time. “My name is Erica and you are?”
“James, my name is James” James held out his hand waiting for me to shake it or something.
“Nice to meet you James, but I really must start heading home if you don’t mind?”
“No of course not, we all have to get home. It’s been very nice meeting you Erica, I do hope we get to see a lot of each other” He smiled at me and winked.
I blushed and immediately dogged into the car. I looked in the rearview mirror and didn’t see him. Is it possible he was already on the other side of the school? No couldn’t be. Unless he was…. No now I’m thinking strange. I laughed at my own weird thought.
I backed out of the school parking lot and started on my way home, to Monty’s. Do you see how boring my life is?
--- --- ---
When I arrived home in the little apartment I found Monty asleep on the couch. I walked into my little bedroom where all it held was a bed and a desk. I strung my backpack on the back of the chair and plopped down onto my bed.
A stream of cool air blew on my face and ruffled the curtains. I immediately sat straight up; I hadn’t left the window open! I got up off the bed and looked around. Everything seemed to be in its place. Then what was it that seemed out of place?
All this vampire stuff was starting to get to my head. I walked into the living room and shook Monty awake.
She awoke with a stutter and looked at me defensively. “What are you doing home?” she asked me.
I stared at her with the look that said ‘are you kidding me’ but apparently I wasn’t.
“Aunt Monty, school is already over its 4:30 in the afternoon..”
“Oh” she said and got up. She patted me on the head and walked into the kitchen. “I’m sorry sweaty, I guess I forgot”
I stared at Monty, the circles under eyes looked odd and her dark skin looked paler.
“Monty… have you been feeling ok” I ask her
She doesn’t reply, instead she starts making dinner.
I let her drop the question and walk back into my room. I start to work on my homework and slowly I fall asleep.
I awoke to the sound of a loud clattering noise.
“SHIT!” I hear Monty say in the kitchen
Immediately I’m up and running in there like crazy.
“Monty! Is everything all right?” I ask her in a loud voice.
Monty is picking up pots and pans and cursing under her breath.
Monty looks up at me and shrugs. I know something is wrong, so I grab Monty by the shoulder and take the pot out of her other hand. The look in my eyes is telling her not to lie to me.
She shrugs and takes a deep breath.
“There was a man standing on the patio, staring in at me”
A growl escaped from his lips, a shriek escaped from hers. As he slowly lowered his head toward her neck, the more frightened the girl became. Even before his teethe had entered her neck the girl knew she was going to die, she felt it within her heart.

“There was a man standing on the patio, staring in at me”
This. I knew immediately that she wasn’t lying. Monty would never make up something like
“What did he look like?” I asked her. Immediately I thought of the man I had to kill in the woods. Maybe just breaking their necks wasn’t enough. Could that be possible?
I broke Ralph’s neck, I saw his body go rigid and I saw him collapse to the ground. I didn’t have enough time to watch and see if he had turned to dust. They usually turn to dust when they die.
“Oh, NO! NO! NO!” I thought “this can’t happen.”
Monty shook her head and started running the little sink, looking out the patio door.
“I only got a glimpse of him… All I know is he had black hair. When he saw me he just jumped off the balcony” she said to me.
“Aunt Monty was he looking at you or would you say that he was looking for something inside your home?”
“He looked like he was looking around; it took him a minute before he caught me staring at him.”
A shiver ran down my spine, I didn’t even respond to Monty; instead I just ran into my room grabbed my keys and shoved out the door.
“Erica! What do you think you are doing!?” Monty had yelled after me.
I didn’t hear her, the door was already shut. When I got to my car, I already knew where I was headed.
I had to go back and see for myself if dust lay on the ground where the man who killed my parents still lay.
I had to know, either that or I just wanted air to breathe. The woods is one of the many places I come to breathe in some free breathes. I rushed down the road and pretty soon I was on the highway headed for the next town. All it ever was, was woods
--- --- ---
I sat in my car that was pulled over on the side. The side that was the place I came barreling out of.
I opened my car door and slammed it shut, not even bothering to lock it.
I slowly stepped into the grass and within a few steps; I was surrounded by huge trees. They were so tall and their branches moved in the warm wind. I took a deep breath and walked in the direction of what seemed like the place where Ralph died.
It was sunset, or it was beginning of the sunset. The leaves, twigs, and vines crunched underneath my feat. It was like the woods were breathing with me. Like they were playing their own little game.
Before long I had hit a blank spot, the end of the long meadow. This was the place I had killed him. I looked to the left at the tree; this was the tree he had thrown me upon.
It had been 3 weeks since the attack, how could their possibly still be dust on the ground. I honestly didn’t think this out.
I slumped on the back of the tree and slid down to its stump into a sitting position. I leaned my head back and looked at the orange, blue sky.
“SNAP”
I bolted up, somebody was walking behind me.
Immediately; I shot up, the instincts coming to me again. I turned and there he was.
James
“What the hell do you think you are doing?!” I asked him breathless.
He registered the panic in my voice; you could see it in his eyes
“Calm down, calm down; I only saw you pull over on the side of the road and I ran into the woods after you” he said his hands raised
I breathed out a breath of air; I didn’t even know I was holding. I didn’t respond, I just stared down at his feet.
Tears came to my eyes, my heart beat so fast. Why was was I so scared of the woods?
“What happened to you here?” James asked me, stepping towards me.
I looked up quickly, a tear fell from my face, “Why do you think something happened to me here?” I asked him trying to sound nonchalant.
“I can see it in your eyes”
That voice…
I knew so well… it was as if he was…. But it couldn’t be, I killed Ralph in the woods, he is dead.
James stepped forward and I stepped back, stricken with fear.
“Your name isn’t James is it?” I asked him, my voice trembling.
He tilted his head to the side and smiled and slowly started to laugh.
“I can’t believe you think I’m Ralph! That old coop! I would have killed him myself, but it looks like you took care of that.”
“Wait, you’re not Ralph?”
“No! I’m his brother.”
It hit me like a punch in the stomach; James was Ralph’s brother, the guy that killed my parents.
“Actually,” said James interrupting my thoughts, “Ralph didn’t kill your parents.”
“Then who did?” I barely made out of my mouth.
James looked down, “Me.”
“What?”
I could barely hear him, but somehow I knew what he had said; and I just refused to believe it.
“It was me, Erica… Ralph forced me…. He said that he would never let me drink form another animal or soul again…. He said that he would kill you, that he could trance you and every other soul… that I would starve to death”
I couldn’t think, so I screamed, tears burned down my cheeks, “How could you!” I shrieked at him.
I ran after him, full speed, I tackled him to the ground and clawed at his eyes. Hoping he would feel the pain I feel.
But James was to strong; he grabbed my wrists and pulled my hands away from his face.
“Calm down!” he yelled at me.
The rage swept through me in a sudden hot flash. Before I had time to hit him again he was up and pushing me against the tree. “Your parents aren’t dead” he said to me.
My arms were pinned beside me, I was in pain, and the bandage on my neck was starting to become dark with oozing blood. The cut had opened up again.
“Crap,” he snarled, “Your bleeding again” he raised his hand and gently pressed down on the bandage. I didn’t say a word, piece by piece the puzzle of my parents slowly came together. James leaned in so close to my lips, and began to speak.
“You’re correct, Erica, Your parents aren’t dead… they are vampires…. But here is the thing, when I killed them… Ralph put them in a trance… They hate you Erica… They want to kill you…”
James lips were so close to me, I shivered as his words swept through me. He slowly let me go and I sunk to the ground. James sunk down next to me and scooped me up in his arms and laid me to rest on his lap.
Looking up at me he spoke, “Erica, once I killed them… I became your Guardian…. I became a Guardian Angel, to watch over you.”
I couldn’t control any of the feelings that swept through me then, I leaned in so close and pressed my lips to his…. I knew then we were connected, This man was my Guardian Angel and I loved him.
