“Aeval! Wait up.” Cried Hostia as she rushed up to the fast girl.
“Sorry Hostia. I have just been blah today and in my own world.”
“I can tell, you’re calling me by my stupid name. Plus all the guys are practically drooling over you and you haven’t even played with them, like you usually do.” stated Hostia, “What’s wrong?” Aeval was the most beautiful girl in the school, even though she wasn’t in the “In” crowd, everyone, girls and boys, loved her. She had long blue-black hair that always fell into perfect, shiny waves at the end. Her skin was pale and clear and it never had a blemish. She had bright blue-green eyes that always shimmered with mischief. But not today, come to think of it, not all week. Something was wrong.
“Oh, I don’t know. I feel so hungry all the time and no matter how much food I eat, the hunger never goes away. I’m surprised I haven’t gained any pounds. Ever since I broke up with Ango, I’ve felt like shit. Ango was Aeval’s ex boyfriend. It wasn’t a surprise that that they broke up. They were a little too different. He was bright and outgoing and Aeval was dark and she kept to herself. He was sporty and always went to the college sporting events and Aeval was the artist that went to all the extra art classes and art showcases. “And because of finals,” continued Aeval. “It has been getting worse. I hate it. Hosty, I just can’t figure it out.” Aeval’s beautiful face creased with worried wrinkles as she thought through her situation.
“Have you tried a doctor or anything?” questioned Hosty.
“No, Mother said I’m just growing and it’ll pass. The bitch never listens.” said Aeval in a bitter tone. Aeval never got along with her mother and her father was always away on a business trip. Her stomach growled loudly.Aeval laughed. “I told you I’m hungry. C’mon, let’s get to my car, I have some food Puella sneaked me. I told her too.” Stated Aeval in a matter of fact tone. Puella was Aeval's family’s maid. She did the cleaning, cooking, and she basically raised Aeval when she was little.
“Sweet! Puella’s cooking, this is great.” smiled Hosty. Aeval smiled for the first time this week. “I think I’m a tad hungry myself.” Aeval slid her arm around Hostia’s waist and hugged her and they started walking to the car. Hostia noticed that Aeval smelled her when they hugged each other. That was odd, Aeval never did that to her. Not normal.
“Thanks Hosty, you really helped me. Hmmm... that’s weird. I feel less hungry and more vibrant than I have felt all week. Aeval smiled and clapped her hands.
“Cool more food for me, I feel tired.” Hostia frowned, “Must be from studying.” at that moment, Hostia saw Aeval’s car and walked towards it. “Finally! You parked your car really far today. No wonder you haven’t gained any weight. You walk a lot.
“Ha! And that is a bad thing?” Aeval unlocked the Aeval’s 66 Chevy and the two girls slid in. “Ugh! I hate summer.” Aeval pulled out the food. “Good thing I put the food in a mini cooler. The truck get’s so hot.” She grabbed a sandwich and pulled out of the school parking lot.
Hosty grabbed one of Puella’s famous lemon squares and bit into it. She smiled as the dessert melted in her mouth. “This is the best. What do you want to eat?”
“Just a sandwich.” Hostia handed her the sub sandwich and Aeval started the car and drove out of the college parking lot “Have you been studying for finals?” asked Aeval.
“I’m sad to say, very little. But, hey, I’m studying with you. Your the smartest person I know.” smiled Hosty.
“Awww, thanks Hosty. I’ll get you caught up.” said Aeval with a smile..
Hosty laughed. “Thanks. I don’t even know where to start.” They pulled into Aeval’s drive way and got out and walked to the huge house. Aeval’s family had always been rich. Her great grandfather built up his family company from a little investment. They were lucky. Not at all like Hosty’s family, who had money problems from tim to time.
“Mother! Puella! We’re home!” yelled Aeval.
“In the kitchen!” shouted her mother. They walked into the huge kitchen and set their bags down. Aeval”s mother looked at the bags disapprovingly at the bags and said, “I see that Puella snuck some food out for you again.” Puella and Aeval looked down and her mother started talking again. “Your father isn’t coming back from his trip tonight. He said he ad some unfinished business he needed to take care of.”
“What? He promised! I told him I needed help with my studying for the Ap Calculus part of the test. Damn it! What am I gonna do Mother? I’m not gonna pass. He’s such a liar.” Aeval’s pale face turned bright red with anger. Hosty was startled by Aeval’s outburst. Aeval never got a long with her mother.
“Oh stop complaining, I’ll get you a tutor. Now get out of here and go study. I don’t want you to fail. Everyone will thing I brought up a drop out child.” said Aeval’s mother.
“Not until I get some food” snapped Aeval. Hostia felt awkward. They did this all the time but Hostia never got used to it. Her and her mother didn’t have the same personality or even the same looks. Aeval had long wavy blue-black hair, her mother, short straight brown hair. Aeval was pale and , her, tan and chubby. Nothing was family like with them.
“God, now I’m raising a fat child.” argued her mother.
“At least I’ll be like you. You are such a perfect person with a perfect life and husband. You know he’s fucking his secretary, right? Maybe right this moment she’s blowing him. Perfect my ass!” yelled Aeval. She grabbed a bag of chips and ran out with Hostia running after her. Hosty looked back to see her rolling her eyes.
“Ummm, what was that about? Was the thing about your dad true?” Aeval stayed quiet. “Hon, you can tell me I wont tell a soul.” urged Hostia.
“Yeah, but let’s just study now. I’ll call a tutor later for calc. I’ll call you when the lessons are.” said Aeval quietly as she open her bag of chips. “I’m so hungry. Let’s study.”complained Aeval.
Hosty smiled, “Okay, where do you want to start?”
“Let’s attempt Calculus.”
********************
Hosty jumped out of her clunker of a car and ran to Aeval, who was sitting on the stairs on the entrance of their school. “Finals are today! You ready for...... are you okay? You look terrible. You sick?” asked Hostia worryingly. She was paler than ever and her hair wasn’t shiny or wavy, it was a dull black, hardly any blue in it and it was frizzy. She didn’t have her usual black makeup on and her hair was pulled in a sloppy bun. Her slim figure was lost in the baggy sweatshirt and sweats. Her pale, clear face was red with irritation and blemishes. This was not her at all.
“Remember my hunger problem?” Aeval began as Hostia nodded, “It has been getting worse. I feel like shit all the time. I’m tired all the time and all I can do is study then crash when I get home. Mother loves it and Puella is just worried. Mother still refuses to take me to the doctor still. I’m scared I’m gonna fail. Let’s sit down.” she sighed, “When do the finals start?” she laid her head on Hostia’s lap.
“In thirty minutes. Do you.......Whoa I feel light headed. I’m tired too. Huh? That’s odd.” at that moment Hostia fell asleep.
“Hosty? I feel better now.” Aeval turned her head up to see the sleeping girl’s face. “Hosty! Wake up!” Aeval sat up quickly. At the sudden movement, Hostia woke up.
“That was odd, all of a sudden I felt sleepy and then I see you looking at me strangely.” Hosty giggled. “Hey, you look way better, your hair and skin color are normal now.” said Hosty in a faraway voice. “We should start heading to class.” At that, they stood up and walked. Well, Aeval glided in a dreamy state and Hostia stumbled, trying to keep up with her. “You are definitely feeling good.” The two girls laughed and went their separate ways.
**********************
“Common Hosty! We finished our finals, we should celebrate.” pleaded Aeval.
“I don’t know, I’ve just been feeling blah ever since this morning, when I fell asleep.” said Hostia in a tired voice.
“I’ll buy you some coffee or monster or something. Please, It’s just a club. That’s part of the college life!” pleaded Aeval.
Hosty smiled. “Oh no, not the puppy dog eyes. I guess we can go. No beer though, I’m already tired. Coffee sounds great.” Should I leave my car at your house?” asked Hosty.
“Sure, drive to my house and we can change into better clothes. Then buy coffee for you and maybe some dinner.” Hosty raised her eye brows. “Yeah, I’m hungry again. Don’t judge me. It stopped this morning for a little. That helped me through finals. Sorry I’m blabbering again.” said Aeval quickly. “Home, coffee, dinner, club. Sound like a plan?”
Hostia laughed, “Of course, I love your clubbing cloths.” They went into their separate cars and drove to Aeval’s house.
After they parked in Aeval’s driveway and ran into Aeval’s bedroom, they started to go through her closet. After twenty minutes the girls were ready. “Lets go to dinner, I’m hungry.”
“God, this is getting annoying. Were do you want to go? I heard about a place near the club. It’s called... oh I forgot.”
“Great name,” joked Aeval, “ I’m in the mood for crappy chinese food. What do ya’ think?”
“Sounds good, I guess, I’m not hungry like you are. Oh my god! You will not shut up today!” laughed Hosty. “Let’s go” They drove to the cheap restaurant and took a seat in the dingy chairs. “I don’t know what to get, club drinks and cheap chinese food don’t really mix.” smiled Hostia.
“Well then! You don’t have to eat, I can get a to go if you want.” asked Aeval.
“Really? Ok, order and I’ll drive us there wile you eat.” agreed Hosty. Aeval went over and got her food and ran to her truck.
Aeval laughed and said, “I can tell this is gonna’ be a good night!” They both jumped up and Aeval ordered her food. Aeval ran to the car with a bulging bag full of food that could feed a family, in one hand a bottle of water in the the other. They both slid in and Hosty started the truck and they were off to the club.
************************
“Wow” I whispered. My voice was lost in the booming club music. The club was amazing, the neon paint made the walls look alive with the light strobes, and the people were just beautiful. Some were almost translucent. They shared sweat and tired, excited smiles as they swayed to the DJ’s music.
“Aeval! Aeval! God Aeval, I was yelling at you for like, ten minutes. You had a creepy look on your face. What was with the licking your lips thing? You hungry or something?” Yelled Hosty.
Huh? I didn’t know I was doing that. How odd. “Sorry Hosty. I just haven’t been here is a long time and... and...oh, let’s just dance.” I laughed and grabbed Hosty’s slim wrists. I got a jolt of energy and giggled. “This is great!” Hosty rolled her eyes at me and started swinging her hips with the music. A tasty looking man started grinding with her and she smiled at me and danced with him. I laughed and started dancing and soon enough, a tan guy came up and put his hand around my hips from behind and I started dancing in step with him. My body was vibrating with energy. It was like I was on top of the world. I should go to clubs more often, I thought. I turned around to look at my partner and smiled. My skin tingled with energy every time our skin touched. I smiled, he was tan with a bright, white smile and a beautiful brown eyes. Just like Ango’s. He had a great body and a good dancer. He smiled back at me and I leaned forward and we kissed. I leaned more into him and the kiss got more intense. He kisses better than Ango though.
After about ten minutes we broke the kiss and I asked, “Yours or mine?”
“Well you get to the point fast.” he flirted, “I like that in a woman.”
“Well if we leave now you can get to know me better.” I flirted back. “What’s your name hon?”
“Mortuus. What is yours sweetness?”
I smiled, he was cheesy “Aeval. As I was asking, yours or mine Mortuus?”
Mortuus laughed and said, “My place, you gonna leave your friend here?”
I looked over to Hosty and saw her making out with the guy she was originally dancing with. “No, I think she’ll be just fine. Let’s go.” We walked out of the club and went to his car and then to his apartment to do things unspeakable. If I’d have known what would of happened, I wouldn’t have even stepped into the club that night.
****************************
Hosty woke up to the sharp ringing of her cell phone. She rubbed the sleep from her eyes and looked at her clock. Holy shit! It was two in the afternoon! She must have arrived home really late last night. Hostia decided not to have sex with the man she met last night, though Aeval did. They exchanged a few kisses and then their numbers, but that was about it. The phone rang again and she flipped it open. “Hello?”
“Hosty! You picked up your phone! You need to get here quick! I did something really bad. Really, really bad.” stressed Aeval.
“Aeval! Calm down. Hon, what happened and where are you?” asked Hosty in a rushed tone.
“I didn’t mean to. I don’t even know how I did it. I woke up and... and... Hosty come here. Please Hosty! I’m scared.” sobbed Aeval.
“Just tell me where you are!” demanded Hosty. Aeval gave her the address to the apartment she was in and Hosty ran to her car.
****************************
Shit. Shit. Shit. What have I done? I didn’t mean to do it. We just had sex. How in the hell is that deadly? It was great. No hunger, just the feeling of someone loving me again. And just like that, the present whooshed back and slapped me in the face and more salty tears ran down my face. I remember waking up in his arms this morning, I was so happy, not because I liked the guy, but there was no hunger. None. It was amazing. I had turned to face him and say goodbye, but I already missed my chance to do so. He just laid there, eyes open and mouth slightly ajar. I remember shaking him and asking, more like screaming, for him to wake up. He didn’t budge. I vaguely remember running into the kitchen and calling Hosty and giving her directions to the small apartment. I could’t bring myself to tell her over the phone. I had crumpled on the floor after that. I couldn’t believe it, I killed a person. I bursted into tears again right as Hosty ran through the door.
“Aeval! What the hell happened? Oh hun, are you okay?” Hosty rushed over to me and tried to touch me. I lost it.
“Don’t touch me! I don’t want to harm you I’m sorry.” I cried, “I’m so, so sorry. I didn’t mean to do it. It... it just, I killed him Hosty. I killed him. Warm, salty tears ran down my face as Hostia looked at my face in horror.
“How?” she asked. Not, how could you, or get out of my face. Just how.
My chin trembled, “I don’t know. I slept with him and then when I woke up I looked at him and he was just... just there. Dead.”
“How do you know it was you that killed him? he could have been dieing before you met him. It just doesn’t make any sense.” Hosty said as she shook her head. “Is there any blood? Where is the body?”
I stood up slowly and walked to the dreaded bedroom. I opened the door and the smell hit the both of us. I flinched and shut the door. “I just woke up and he was like that. He said he was really tired after we... you know, and he passed out. I just... what do I do? I know I killed him. I’m not crazy.” I babbled, “I’m not hungry anymore.” I smiled, “No hunger!”
“What the hell are you talking about? Never mind. Lets call the police and don’t say you killed him.” After Hosty called, we came up with the story and when the day was over we went over to her apartment.
“Okay, why do you think you killed him?” asked Hostia in a confused tone.
“I don’t know, I just have the feeling that I did something bad.” I cried, “I don’t know why. I didn’t do anything wrong.” I smiled and wiped my tears away. “I don’t feel hungry anymore. That’s a plus!”
“Wait, your not hungry anymore? When did your hunger start Aeval?”
“About a week after Ango and I broke up, but I don’t see the big deal Hosty. What are rambling on about?” I questioned.
“ Okay, remember the morning of the finals?.” I nodded. “You put your head in my lap and I passed out.”
“What does that have to do with anything?”
“Were you having sex with Ango a lot?”
“What the hell, Hostia! Why the hell are you bringing Ango up?” My face was scrunched up in disbelief. “What is your point?”
“Well, was he tired after your... you know,” Hosty smiled as her face turned red, “Maybe you are just a bad ass when it comes to sex. I don’t know!” She tossed her hands in the air. “Never mind, just don’t touch a lot of people.”
I blew my hair out of my face, “You don’t make any sense. I’ll try to not touch anyone. I don’t know why, but I’ll try.”
Hosty smiled, “Common’ let’s call the police.
******************************************
After dealing with the police, Hosty and I went over to her little apartment. It was small, but surprisingly homey. “Okay,” started Hosty as they sat down on her small, worn out couch. “What do you remember about this morning?”
“I already told you!” I felt tears slide down my face. The police officer had asked her this question many times at the station. “How did he die, Hosty?” I asked.
“The paramedics told me his heart failed because it didn’t have the energy to pump any blood throughout his body. Can I ask a question?” I gave her a small nod, “How could you have killed him? The cops looked at Mortuus’s medical record and he had no record in heart problems. But how?” asked Hosty.
“Okay, remember the morning of our finals?” Hostia nodded her head in agreement. “I was really hungry and tired, so I laid my head in your lap. My theory was that, you fell asleep for no reason and I felt better after it. I remember feeling so hungry and while I was in contact with you, I felt the hunger slowly go away.”
“Were are you going with this Aeval?” Asked Hostia.
“I mean, when I was with Mortuus, I felt the same way, but I didn’t have just a little hunger left, I felt full. For the first time in a long time! I just dismissed it as me having a good time, but I guess I was wrong. I guess I made the mistake of keeping in contact with him while we were asleep and he ended up having the energy sucked right out of him. If I fell asleep in your lap, I probably would have killed you, Hosty. Killed you.” By this time, my face was drenched with my tears.
Hosty was quiet for a while, as she processed my theory. “I see were you are going with this. It sounds absurd that you have this...this hunger, but I believe you.” I smiled in relief. “But you can’t go around killing people by poking them. You have to control your new hunger. I’ll try to help you as much as I can, but this is mostly you. Do you think you are up to it?” asked Hosty.
“Of course I am, I don’t wan’t to kill anymore people!” I said.
Hosty laughed, “Ok, let’s do this.”
************************************
A few weeks had passed since my accident. Hosty had been helping me with my hunger by making me feed off of her. The first week we had a huge fight about me feeding on her and how I could possibly kill her, but she is stubborn and talked me into it. I make sure she has enough energy before practice, but after every time I feed, she still is a little drowsy.
Today is my little graduation between the both of us. I’ve been able to hug people without feeding on them or anything like that. Basic touching skills, I call it. For my graduation, I am going to a club, the same one where this all started. It is going to be hard going back, but I think I can do it.
“Earth to Aeval! Earth to Aeval!” said Hostia with a smile on her face as she waved her hand in front of me. “You okay? You are spacing again. Are you nervous about tonight?”
“A little, I don’t know why, but I just don’t want to hurt anyone.”
“You are not having sex tonight, you are not close to that yet, so there will be no reason for you to be worried.” assured Hosty.
I shook my head, “You are right. I am just over thinking. I’m ready for this.” I smiled and squeezed Hostia’s hand, without sucking the life out of her, and stood up.
We had been at Hostia’s apartment just talking and I just didn’t want to go home. My father just got back home and he was fighting with my mother more and more. Mostly about little things, like what we are having for dinner or what we are going to paint the new kitchen cabinets. It has gotten so bad, that I have decided to move out. So, today I am going to look at new apartments, so I can get away from my family. I’m looking for a place close to town because I used to go to clubs and shop a lot. I am going to start doing again.
“Okay hun, gotta go. I have to look for a new home.” I said as I stretched.
Hosty snorted, “Okay find a new home. You sound ecstatic about it.” joked Hostia.
“I shall!” Hosty stood up from her small couch and hugged me. “See you tonight Hosty!”
“See ya!” I closed her door and ran down the stairs, to my truck. I started it and drove off to, hopefully, my new home.
***********************************
“So how was it?”
I was silent for a few seconds and then exclaimed, “I found it!”
Hosty jumped up and down while she clapped her hands in my room, “That is so great! Where is it?”
“In town. It is a little small, compared to what I’m used to-
“So it is a big apartment.” interrupted Hosty.
“Just a little,” I smiled. “I can start moving in in a month because the old owners still live there, but that gives me more time to save money and get more furniture.” I turned to look into my closet. “What kind of cloths do you want to wear?”
“Anything nice would be great.” said Hostia in an annoyed tone.
I laughed, “Nervous for me or did something happen today?”
Nothing happened I just am nervous and shaky. Lets get dressed and head out.” Hosty stood up and walked to where i was, next to my huge closet, and started picking pieces clothing. “Do you think you are ready?”
I put a tube-top over my head and said, “I know I am Hosty, why wouldn’t I be?” I pulled on short-shorts that showed of the many tattoos that I had on my pale body. Hosty had already put on her mini skirt and black laced top. “Heels?”
“Nah, I’m putting on sneakers. It makes me look like a rocker type of girl.” laughed Hostia. “You can.”
I shook my head, “Boots will do.” We threw on our shoes and ran out the door and into my old truck.
“Ready?” asked Hostia as she buckled her seatbelt.
I started the truck, “Ready as I’ll ever be.” and I drove to the club.
***********************
“Are you sure I’m ready to do this?” I asked nervously as Hosty and I walked towards the booming club. Domus Letum was our favorite club and Hosty and I would always go if we got the chance.
“Of course you are!” Hosty said in an exasperated voice, “Don’t back out now. You can’t hide from people for the rest of your life.” We stopped in front of the bouncer and payed the fee to get in.
With a stamp on both of our hands, Hosty and I walked in. The club was lit with colorful lights and on the dance floor, there was strobe lights. The music was a type of fast, upbeat techno that I wasn’t familiar with. Hostia squeezed my hand and pushed us through to the dance floor. I felt shoulders bump into me as we walked. Every bump or shove made me wince. I had my hunger under control, but I couldn’t help but flinch. Hosty noticed and and squeezed my hand tighter and let go. We were in the middle of the dance floor and she started dancing. I stood there for a few seconds to get my bearings and then I started dancing. I relaxed a little and I knew I could do this. Hostia and I dance for a about an hour, until we got thirsty and walked to the bar.
The bartender usually worked there when Hosty and I came to Domus Letum. He had blonde hair with highlights, he was small and skinny, but you could tell that he worked out. He looked our way and smiled and said, “What can I get you ladies?”
Hostia reached over the bar and playfully slapped his arm. “You know
what we usually get Jeremy!”
Jeremy laughed and shook his head. “A little change wouldn’t hurt once in a while.” He turned his head towards me. “I haven’t seen you here in a while. What happened?” He looked behind me, “You don’t have your usual crowd of drooling hotties around you.”
I smiled, “I’ve just been busy looking for an apartment and a job.”
“Oh hun, we have a job opening, if you want it.” He picked up some bottles of alcohol and started mixing.
I tapped my fingers as I thought it through. I would have to come to clubs a lot to feed, so why not get payed anyway? I nodded my head and smiled, “Where is the application?”
Hosty clapped her hands together. “This is so cool!”
Jeremy handed us our drinks and bent down to get the application. He shuffled around some papers until he found the right one and then straightened up to hand it to me.
I took the paper and put it in my purse. “Thanks Jer.”
Jeremy smiled. “No problem, just bring back some tasty guys back here next time.”
Hosty smiled and shook her head, “That will hopefully be soon.” Hostia looked at me and took a sip of her drink. “Let’s go sit down.”
We got a table and sipped our drinks in silence for a while. Hosty was the first to break the silence. “How are you holding up?”
“It is surprisingly easy. I don’t know why I was stressing so much. I may even dace with a guy or two.” Hosty raised her eyebrows. “Don’t worry I have it under control.”
“What do you have under control baby?” I looked up, startled. There stood two guys that had bleary eyes and smelled of alcohol. Drunks are not fun at all.
“None of your business. Now leave my friend and I to our drinks alone.” I ordered.
“Oh but we just want to have some fun.” the drunk slurred as her grabbed my breast.
My anger flared to life and I let my control go as I grabbed his hand. I pulled it away as I drew in his energy. I could tell he was getting weaker. I brought the disgusting drunk to his knees and looked him directly in the eyes. “I think I said no.” I looked at his friend. “Didn’t I say no?” The man shook his head in agreement. I could almost smell his fear. I looked back at the man on his knees. “I guess I said no. So tell me. Why did you touch me?” I still had my wall down and I was sucking a lot of his energy now. A little voice told me to finish him off. Do it right here, right now.
“Aeval! Stop right now!” yelled Hostia.
I snapped out of it and let go of the man as he passed out. “I’m so sorry Hostia. I didn’t mean to loose my temper, I just lost it.”
Hostia bent down to check on the man. “He is still alive.” She let out a big sigh, “We should go get Jeremy.”
